Neanderthals had better than 20/20 but they couldn't see their extinction due to it
A study of Neanderthal skulls suggests that they became extinct because they had larger eyes than our species.
As a result, more of their brains were devoted to seeing in the long, dark nights in Europe, at the expense of high-level processing.
By contrast, the larger frontal brain regions of Homo sapiens led to the fashioning of warmer clothes and the development of larger social networks.
The study is published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
Neanderthals are a closely related species of human that lived in Europe from around 250,000 years ago. They coexisted and interacted briefly with our species until they went extinct about 28,000 years ago, in part due to an ice age.

The eyes have it: The Neanderthal skull (L) has larger eye sockets compared with a modern human skull (R). Consequently, the now extinct species used more of its brain to process visual information
so they had bigger brains because they could see better? cool

Not so much as more of their brain was dedicated to seeing more than thinking, unlike us and our shitty bifocal-glasses eyes.
But can they see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal?
Is this why Asians are good at math

who cares, they went extinct and we got warm clothes and therefor warm genitalia, it's not all bad.

fun fact: heat exposure to the testicles lowers sperm count
Seems like being proficient in any form is a detriment to mental ability.

I care?
Biologists care?
Anthropologists care?
People here who have read the article care?

God dammit I came in here just to say that

I'd love to have been there for that meeting.

They probably treated them like how they treated other humans, though whether humans meeting separate tribes back then was common or not is something idk
would have been kinda neat if we Co existed with them till this day.

Homo Sapiens were very hostile towards the Neanderthals, often hunting and even eating them.
We sure are bastards.

You ever think that because of glasses, our eye sight will evolve into being blind?
You ever think that because of glasses, our eye sight will evolve into being blind?
i don't think that's how it works
You ever think that because of glasses, our eye sight will evolve into being blind?
If we were to evolve into being blind, we'd need to not need our eyes anymore, and it'd take thousands and thousands of years.
Also, the idea of evolution is that only the fittest survive in their environment, but we're so fit for surviving on earth that even the weakest can survive
would have been kinda neat if we Co existed with them till this day.
If we didn't already kill them, they would probably face a lot of discrimination.

We already do. Hit up your local Wal-Mart.
imagine what it would be like if they continued evolving until the present with us. We may have ended up with a slightly less intelligent version of humans co-existing with us. Probably more like smarter gorillas

The weakest won't reproduce as much however

Not blind no

We would probably have enslaved them.
The title was confusing.
I read it multiple times as "Netherlands had better than 20/20"
Only thing that crossed my mind was, god damn, they have some shitty ass network cables.
So most anime characters are neanderthals?

We were genetically similar enough to interbreed, and there is still a small amount of Neanderthal DNA mixed in with our DNA. And I doubt their intelligence was that low - they were tool-users, like Homo sapiens, and their brains were actually larger when fully matured. The major differences seem to have been in socialization. Neanderthals were definitely comparable to Homo sapiens, except that more of their brain was dedicated to vision (and their eye sockets are massive). They didn't have as strong social behavior as Homo sapiens did.
And there are two theories for their extinction - climate change or competition with modern humans. I really, really doubt that we hunted them to extinction. Climate change seems the most realistic, and interbreeding to the point of genetic dilution. If you aren't African, you have a little bit of Neanderthal DNA.
