• Barack Obama eases rules on US travel to Cuba

BBC
The president said he had instructed the relevant government departments to allow religious groups and students to travel to the communist-run island. President Obama said he believed the new, more relaxed, rules which also make it easier to send remittances to Cuba will support civil society there. The changes will not end the decades-old US trade embargo. The rules will be modified to, among other things: Allow religious organisation to sponsor religious travel to Cuba under a general licence Allow accredited institutions of higher education to sponsor travel to Cuba Allow any US person to send remittances (up to $500 per quarter) to non-family members in Cuba to support private economic activity Allow remittances to be sent to religious institutions in Cuba in support of religious activities Allow US airports to apply to provide services to licensed charters 'Improved contact' In a statement, President Obama said the changes were aimed at developing "people-to-people" contacts through more academic, cultural and religious exchanges. The moves follows an easing of the trade embargo in April 2009, when the president ordered curbs on remittances and travel by Cuban-Americans visiting family members on the island to be relaxed. But Florida Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said the changes would not help improve the situation in Cuba. "They will not make the Castro regime show respect for human rights, and they certainly won't help the Cuban people free themselves from the despotic tyranny which oppresses them," she said. The changes are expected to come into force in approximately three weeks. Why can't he/we just remove these dumb restrictions. The Cold War is over people. Cuba's economy is suffering.
That's good they're easing relations, I've been to Cuba and its a nice country.
Now if we could just do away with that trade embargo, that'd be even better.
Because America doesn't appreciate having soviet nuclear weapons deployed within 90 miles of it
If all of the countries that the US did bad things to decided to embargo them they'd have no trade partners left
Cold War ended 20 years ago, why are we still restricting them anyway?
Cold War ended 20 years ago, why are we still restricting them anyway?
Butthurt mostly. I won't say more to this because it will start off a huge fucking war.
Really want to go to Cuba, seems lots more interesting than the standard Caribbean tourist destinations.
Cuba is the only country outside of North America that still uses American cars.
Cuba sounds interesting sometimes. Would like to see the place done up a bit.
it looks like the fidelity of obama promising change was true
As if we needed more evidence he was a pinko
Cuba is the only country outside of North America that still uses American cars.
That's most likely because American cars are pieces of shit that practically deep-freeze themselfs everytime the temperature hits below -5C.
I wonder if Obama knows how much Cuban's actually hate Americans... And one of the reasons I like Cuba, is because of this, when your in resorts, it's basically all Canadians, besides the few people from Europe.
I wonder if Obama knows how much Cuban's actually hate Americans...
Hence easing tensions DERP
I always thought there were mutual restrictions, not just from the US side....
It's amazing how the Cubans manage to keep those age old American cars running despite using makeshift parts to service them.
It's amazing how the Cubans manage to keep those age old American cars running despite using makeshift parts to service them.
Most don't even make enough money to buy a real muffler.
Because America doesn't appreciate having soviet nuclear weapons deployed within 90 miles of it
the reason the soviets put a missile silo there in the first place is because america had numerous missile silos right outside of the russian border pointed straight at moscow (the russians actually succeeded in their mission - the americans came to an agreement to remove their missile silos once the russians removed theirs) the only reason the cubans allowed the russians to build there (they really didn't want to) was because america was constantly undermining their sovereignty america was not the golden picturesque figure during the cold war, don't let media fool you
Also, I think the US doesnt stop the embargo because they want to show they dont like communisim. [editline]15th January 2011[/editline] Dont let the hotels and beaches on the crystal waterfront fool you, outside the captiol the place is a rat hole.
Doubt Obama could lift the trade embargo if he wanted to, the Republicans would flip a shit

The government hates the US more than actual citizens.
Not really. The government hates the US more than actual citizens.
Not really. When I was there a group of people asked me if I was a "American something" And I told them no I was Canadian and they said okay and welcome to Cuba. I asked what the group was for and they said they want to keep americans away.
Why do you hate America
He didn't say Americans, he said American Cars.
Cold War ended 20 years ago, why are we still restricting them anyway?
They are trying to perpetuate the red scare.
My family's synagogue is actually taking advantage of this and going to Cuba to aid Jews there

I like how Obama acts like he has authority over the Cuban government. It's not like they don't have a leader or anything. Cuba will probably just laugh and kick the Yankee tourists out.
