• No drone on this lawn - Virginia woman blasts trespassing drone out of the sky with her shotgun
It was after church earlier this summer, and Jennifer Youngman was relaxing on her porch in rural Virginia, cleaning her guns. "The next thing I hear is 'buzzzzzzz," she tells As It Happens guest host Dave Seglins. "They were trespassing in my airspace. They had harassed the cattle. Mr. Duvall had been harassed," she says. "That was more ammunition than I needed." So when the drone came close, she raised her shotgun and pulled the trigger. "And with that I blasted it to pieces." Actually unsure about this, do you actually own the airspace above you? and if so, how many metres above say, the roof, 10? 20?
Let Youngman's philosophy about trespassers be a warning to others: "I like to shoot, and I like to kill, so when you cross the line please stand still."
Because, y'know, that makes you sound fair, reasonable, and sane. Honestly with no idea of what the guys were actually doing, it's hard to say anything on this. She seemed more than a bit eager to blast the drone out of the sky for paranoia's sake, but it seemed the two guys using it were about to confront her until they noticed the goddamn shotgun.
Wait her neighbor is Robert Fuckin' Duvall? That's actually pretty cool.

Paragliders and hang gliders can easily soar above that height, so your ability to exclude a snooping gliding enthusiast appears to be limited.
At any rate, people need to calm the fuck down with the arbitrary drone hatred.
The two started walking toward the shotgun toting Youngman, but soon thought better of it. She says they turned around and went back to their car.
She sounds crazy. I wouldn't be surprised if she pointed her gun at them when they approached.
I wouldn't really want a drone flying around above my house either. But this woman is fucking insane [editline]1st September 2016[/editline] [t]https://localtvwtvr.files.wordpress.com/2016/08/shotgun.jpeg?quality=85&strip=all&w=770&strip=all[/t] lol
sounds like she was bored and just looking for an excuse
Makes me wonder if this could be filed as destruction of property
New rules for operating small UAS were just put in effect on the 29th link. It doesn't say anything about the minimum distance from the ground but does have a maximum of 400ft from the ground. It does however go into detail about visual line-of-sight requirements. Here is the whole Federal Records of the recent ruling about UAS from the FAA/Department of Transportation. There was a similar case that was dismissed by a judge that said it invaded the person's privacy.
Actually unsure about this, do you actually own the airspace above you? and if so, how many metres above say, the roof, 10? 20?
There used to be a law that said if you owned land, you owned it right the way from the centre of the earth up to the heavens, but since air travel and the like became popular they decided that was a silly rule.
My only problem with this is whether or not she fired the gun within a safe range of property or people. Otherwise this seems like a perfectly okay thing to do. Too bad for the drone owners though.
Considering an old lady could hit it with a shotgun and she has a pasture, I'm thinking this thing was flying too low and well into her property. While shooting it with a shotgun might be a bit much, you can't expect people to be happy you're flying a camera into their yard. I sure would not appreciate it.
No one said it was equipped with a camera tho.
Unless the person with the controls was in eyesight of it, I think it kind of would need a camera.
I still can't believe you can get from dense rich-people suburban sprawl where I am to old ladies shooting technology out of the air with shotguns on their farms in less than an hour's drive.

Air traffic is exempt but I'm pretty sure flying a drone above somebody's house is illegal especially if it is fitted with surveillance equipment.
"I like to shoot, and I like to kill, so when you cross the line please stand still"
Sounds like someone who has no fucking business owning a firearm.
Doesn't matter if the drone was trespassing or not, destroying it is still illegal.
IMO if they were flying directly over her house at a low altitude it's hard to feel bad about it getting destroyed, it's not appropriate in the slightest to do that. It's extremely illegal in Canada, don't know about the US.
From the pictures in the article and the fact that the two flying the drone had "pulled up in front of her house", I'm assuming that they were flying and driving at the same time. Because of that, odds are that the drone wasn't even over her property or if it was, only slightly so and was more or less sticking to the road. And that being said, it's likely that she illegally fired her gun with the range of public land.
sounds like she was bored and just looking for an excuse
If you were flying a drone around my ranch and pissing off the cattle I'd do the same thing.

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2016/08/65-year-old-woman-takes-out-drone-over-her-virginia-property-with-one-shot/ In this one, it says it was hovering over trees on her property. I think that gives her cause to shoot it, especially since they were scaring her animals, which can cause a ton of problems. If I remember right, there have been a handful of other cases where it has happened, and I don't think anything came out of them. It's in a town literally called "The Plains". It's one of those upscale but still rural places with a bunch of mansions and old farmhouses on large plots of land, from what I can gather. I doubt anyone was in danger from her firing off a shotgun. She has property next to Robert Duvall's home, if I read it right. Seems pretty likely they were trying to get shots of that and tried to shortcut through hers.
While I don't have resources to cite specifically, I attended an FPV race meeting in Australia and the documentation that was handed around by the race coordinators stated that you could fly to a maximum height of 120m inside the perimeter of a property boundary, outside of that required a commercial licence but even with said licence you needed to remain above 120m of private property.

Guys, it's a fucking shotgun. How close was this drone? Is she Annie Oakley?
How long, if not already, will someone shoot one of amazons drones down, and get sued?
