When a poor family in Cambodia fell afoul of loan sharks, the mother asked her youngest daughter to take a job. But not just any job.
The girl, Kieu, was taken to a hospital and examined by a doctor, who issued her a "certificate of virginity." She was then delivered to a hotel, where a man raped her for two days.
Kieu was 12 years old.
"I did not know what the job was," says Kieu, now 14 and living in a safehouse. She says she returned home from the experience "very heartbroken." But her ordeal was not over.
After the sale of her virginity, her mother had Kieu taken to a brothel where, she says, "they held me like I was in prison."
She was kept there for three days, raped by three to six men a day. When she returned home, her mother sent her away for stints in two other brothels, including one 400 kilometers away on the Thai border. When she learned her mother was planning to sell her again, this time for a six-month stretch, she realized she needed to flee her home.
Man, how the hell can you even think about doing something like this?
I mean sure, loan sharks can be dangerous, but i'm sure that there are more solutions to paying them other than selling your daughters as sex slaves.
Disgusting.

I rather run away or face the loan sharks then let any of my family become a slave.
I wonder what's going to happen to these women when the sex-slave loan sharks come knocking and her daughter isn't there anymore to sell...
Easy to say when you haven't been in her situation.
Easy to say when you haven't been in her situation.
She got into a debt pit and she sold her daughter's suffering to get out of it. I try not to judge people too much, I may end up in a situation where I have to do something terrible one day too, but it's really hard not to judge this woman

Sexual abuse is considered normal in Cambodia. I was talking to a lass on the train who taught English for 6 months there; she went into quite great detail about how touching the genitals of a teacher / parent is a sign of affection from the child. The same in reverse. Of course it freaked her the fuck out when a kid tried to touch her, but to the natives it's normal.
It doesn't help that the majority of wealthy and/or intelligent people in Cambodia were massacred by the Khmer Rouge in the late 70's - the country hasn't really recovered.
If you aren't prepared to risk your life for your children you shouldn't have them. I would have either bought a gun and taken my chances with the loansharks or fled.
This is a result of cultural differences more then anything. Not that I advocate child abuse but South East Asia isn't exactly known for having a culture of caring.
They probably arranged the whole ordeal. They were probably like we either kill her or you do this.
Exactly. Not that I support this whatsoever, but playing the devil's advocate, you don't know all the details. And probably never will. Could have been an arrangement along the lines of if you don't, we kill you and this is your daughter's life indefinitely once we take her. The murkey details in the article along with the culture of the area makes it an interesting event.
Most parents usually take the fall so their children can live safely.
This is the other way around.
In the western world where people have 1-3 kids this is true. If you look into the past where people had had a lot of kids, this didn't hold exactly true.
whatever
Damn talk about a different culture going on there, would be nice if they could change that for the better as I think that could do some irreversible harm to a child, and I am glad I am not one those people taking advantage of those kind of children.
Read this as " and I am glad I am not the only one taking advantage of those kind of children." for whatever reason the first time though. I need to go practice my 1st grade reading.
..Certificate of virginity?
How does a doctor tell if she is a virgin or not? Also why the butt is there such a thing as a certificate of virginity?
The only reason you could want one is to sell your virginity.
I really doubt someone is going to get one and put it up on the wall or some shit.
Are the doctors really directly improving how prostitution works for their country?
Either I'm just really confused about this entire situation and missed something or this is beyond bizarre.

You may want to brush up on your anatomy.
Not a 100% indicator but... yeah.

If something's that normalized to society, is it really abuse?
I mean being sold to sex slavery is, of course, but if what you're talking about is THAT common, it's not sexual assault, it's just their culture.
it's just their culture.
Its not and if it was that wouldn't justify it at all.

No, its not their culture, its supported by a corrupted authority.
And even if it was their culture, its still abuse and its still wrong and it still needs to stop.

We are all aware that the cultural phenomenon in question is the parent/teacher-genital thing, right? Because I can smell a misunderstanding based shitstorm on the horizon.
It's a fair enough point, though. If that kind of contact is normal, is it still abuse? I don't know, personally.
I think that the idea of sexual contact with a child immediately and irrevocably causing mental damage doesn't fully follow. I mean, the age of consent exists in most countries to stop adults from using their position of authority to manipulate the minor into sex. In that case, wouldn't it be the manipulation causing the damage, rather than the sexual conflict? If it's the manipulation, then why would sexual contact of the type that's (apparently, I don't know) common in Cambodia cause problems? It's not manipulative, it's a show of affection.
Honestly, I doubt there's even an answer.

And no, I do not support sex with children, I'm just musing on the ethics of it.

The hymen is a thin membrane that stretches and is meant to stretch.
If it is torn like it can be during sex if the guy is very very very bad at it, it may hurt quite a bit. Since he is then having sex with a wound.
The hymen is not supposed to be torn and it's as likely to be torn the 200th time as the first time.
Women are not supposed to bleed or feel pain any of the time they're having sex. Only during periods, if they have periods.
However, being circumcised does increase the chance of tearing the membrane apart as there isn't the "cushioning" thing going on when withdrawing the manhood.
The hymen is not a way to tell if someone is a virgin. Don't try to break it you dumb butt.
Its not and if it was that wouldn't justify it at all.
Sure it fucking would, just step back from a perspective that isn't from your culture for a moment.
Many of the arab nations view the way that we allow women to dress how they please, especially in revealing attire to be sexually inappropriate. Cultures are different, and you're a right moron if you can't understand that.
I've seen videos of what Loan Sharks in Cambodia can do to people... Trust me, the sex slavery is an easy way out.

It is inappropriate for women to dress like sluts, and that's one thing the Americans could possibly learn from the Arab culture.
But it's not like any American is ever going to swallow this, they would just say that their women are proud and beautiful and confident, etc.
[editline]16th December 2013[/editline]
Anyway, as for a culture where infantile children get brutally abused for pleasure and money, that's just objectively wrong.. even if an entire planet was accustomed to it.
Those guys must be horrifying. Not the people you want to cross.
I've played enough GTAIV to know exactly what to do about them.

Except somebody please get them to stop?
Also, the moment they quit, the "IT'S THE VICTIM'S FAULT" rape theory will immediately end, too.
