Tories aim for 100 mbps broadband in majority of UK homes by 2017
The Conservatives have unveiled plans to deliver a "nationwide super-fast broadband", part of which could be funded from the BBC licence fee.
Shadow chancellor George Osborne said a Tory government would deliver speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to the "majority" of homes by 2017.
He said cabling in rural areas could be paid for by private investors or part of the licence fee.
But Labour said the Tories had opposed plans to improve broadband.
The government has set a target that homes should have access to speeds of 2Mbps by 2012.
'Thousands of jobs'
Mr Osborne told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "In the 19th Century we built the railways. In the 20th Century we built the motorways.
"n the 21st Century let's build the super-fast broadband network that will create hundreds of thousands of jobs for Britain."
The Tories said money from private investors would pay for better cabling.
But it was added that it might not be attractive for private companies to install broadband cabling in some rural areas, in which case a proportion of the BBC licence fee could be used.
The Conservatives said the BBC could continue to set aside 3.5% of its licence fee - which currently goes to the digital switchover - to fund broadband expansion.
For Labour, Treasury Minister Stephen Timms said: "On broadband it's not Britain but the Tories that are playing catch-up.
"Labour have already announced measures for rolling out broadband across the country - and the Tories have opposed the plans to make that happen. "
A government report on the UK's digital future - dubbed Digital Britain - was published in June 2009.
The action plan included universal access to broadband by 2012.
The wide-ranging report also tackled internet regulation and public service broadcasting.
Fun fact for foreigners: The Conservatives (or "Tories") are going to win the next election according to every poll for the last two years.
Oh and don't look at Labour's 2mbps guarantee and laugh, that's for every home in Britain whereas the Tory plan is for the "majority" of homes.
100mbps for everyone or no deal.

All while countries like USA and japan want 500Mbps and 1Gbps by 2015. Good luck cause its not gonna happen.
I don't trust them

Japan already has 100Mbps for $30 a month. USA has 16Mbps for $60 a month. They're not the same.
I just hope they won't go Australia on that plan
"Let's make super fast internet! And then ban all the websites and everything"

This.
Tories lame attempt at reaching out to the youth.

No USA has 50Mbps with some ISPs in select areas. I was paying $80 a few months back for it and it was really awesome. However I still dont think we will be seeing 500Mbps and 1Gbps for quite some time, I mean countries like Australia still have horribly slow internet and horribly low monthly bandwidth.
Too bad by 2017 the only site we'll be allowed to browse will be bbc.co.uk.
The tories chat SHIT.
By that time Japan and Korea will be on 5gbps connections.
Try harder Cameron.
I hate Tories.

The tories are going to cut funding for the bbc.
I bet there'll be a catch. If it's funded by license fees, then the government will probably have a stake in it. No more browsing dodgy russian porn sites for you lot.
And we, Australia will still be on 64kbts.
By "the majority" they mean England and Glasgow.
2017 is a little late anyway.
I pretty much demand full 100mbps coverage before 2015 for no more than we pay today.
It's a trick.

The cables would be funded by the BBC, not the service providers.
so no.

Good luck with that, the US is way too big and spread out (it's possible, but I don't think it would be smart for a government to invest that much money on fibre).
Norway already has 1Gbps though, so does SK.

Don't forget Sweden.

I mean in major cities like New York, Miami, and so on.
won't happen

no doubt to afford the service you'd have to start selling your organs, since that's the way most of these too-good-to-be-true schemes go here

Japs laughing at you for paying 80 bucks for 50 Mbps.
I envy them..
100 mbp line to my house but they will give me a cap of 1.5GB in a 5 hour time slot. and then slash the speed down to something stupid like they do now for 5 hours. (Virgin Media) Virgin Media claim they have Fiber Optic network yet they give you stupid caps.
U.S. is too large for that speed internet. I'm just barely making it by with 1 mb/s if I'm lucky.
Damn midwest.

I know right, but man was that net fast.
I get 3 mb/s for 30€ flatrate...

Did you know they were think about deleting 100% of the porn from the internet
which would have made the internet 80% slower.
