The Scopes Trial. Protestantism's Biggest PR Fraud.

I am sure many American students have read through their US History textbook about the well-known Scopes-Trial in the 20's, a time in where Urban and Rural sectors of America displayed harsh divisions ranging in their economical positions and their beliefs. In this case, it's the Theory of Evolution.
Little did textbooks mention at all was the fact that the entire Trial was formulated by the Town Ministry in efforts to put their fundamentalist message of Anti-Darwinism in the ears of every American that was tuned in on this trial, and to put Dayton on the map.
The Defendant
John Scopes.

John Scopes was initially prosecuted by violating a Tennessee state law that prohibited the teaching of Evolution in science classes. Scopes was a well-known football coach who taught Biology as a substitute teacher.

John Scopes and the Town Fathers met at a Robinson's Drugstore (Scopes is is the one seated with the black suit and spectacles) in where they formed a plan and even asked Scopes to be prosecuted. While planning at the Drugstore, the Town Fathers gave Scopes a Biology textbook which mentioned the Theory of Evolution in one of it's chapters (Scopes is seen reading it in the photograph above). The Town Ministry wanted to be sure that he has a knowledge of Evolution and help prove that he had actually taught it to students. As they all agreed on the plan, Scopes leaves for a Tennis game with his friend while the Town Fathers go the other way and state their prosecution to the public.
I realize that I am hellishly tired and may add more to this later on...
Do you have a contingency plan for dealing with the apologists that'll be flooding this thread after the first wave of anti-theists?
Everyone knows Evolution is wrong and the Bible is 100% correct with no errors or contradictions whatsoever.
So fucking what?
It was brilliant and they made a sweet movie out of it.
I still can't imagine how they used to teach Science as religion.
The Earth was so backwards in the past
Isnt that guy from fallout3
?
Grr, Darwin!
Don't make a thread and not finish it OP, it's lazy and makes you look like a twat
Lol....religion
There's still debate in parts of the south of America wether evelution should be taught in school
For fucks sake you retards. Religion is not bad, not evil. Religion is quite natural, and without it, we'd all be fucked. Think about it, if the "10 guidelines for life" wouldn't have been said by God(or made up by some random peasant writing a "fantasy novel", whatever), where do you think we'd be. It's fear like this which keeps people from killing each other. Ok, recently, with human corruption growing worse, and all these rapist priests coming out of the closet, my belief in it has gone down the shitter but the truth still remains, without it, we'd all be fucked.
I don't believe in God, though.

You're kidding right?
Religion is terrible, its makes people lazy and it has caused more hatred, death, destruction, racism, racial segregation, false beliefs, etc... than any other ideology in the world.
Frankly the catholic church should be abolished, its high time they stop taking the law into their own hands. Apologising for years of trauma for all those rape victims just ain't gonna cut it. 2000 years of this, they have single-handedly managed to slow the development of a better and more developed society, just read through the atrocities they have committed and joined in. Also they have killed so many people its ridiculous especially when their bible explicitly states that no killing is accepted. They are also extremely intolerant (all religions are) of whatever people do if its not "right". And seriously the catholic church speaks of helping the poor, when all they do is hoard that money in their precious vault.
Anyway, the 10 commandments were just basic human rules put into writing. Even before the time of religion, i'm pretty sure cavemen didn't just go up to another guy and say "this my wife now ugh", or steal everything. Besides even earlier religions didn't have written rules but they still had basic human instincts which were like the 10 commandments. Stealing has always been wrong to people.
P.S I'm atheist

I agree.
Religion has pretty some good base principles and is great for uniting people together. You can't unite people with science and technology, no matter how hard you try. I mean, wars have been fought over clashing religions before, but because of religion we don't still have small tribes fighting over land. It's all the other shit that people take too far that slanders its name.

You sound like every other angst filled atheist who refuses to reason and think objectively on the nature and history of religion.
P.S I'm an agnostic.

You're an idi- alright, I'll let you make your case THEN insult you.
Think about it, if the "10 guidelines for life" wouldn't have been said by God(or made up by some random peasant writing a "fantasy novel",
The latter.
whatever), where do you think we'd be.
Probably doing the same thing since similar laws had been written in the past. See Codex Hammurabi. Sure, some of that was quite barbaric but it set the stage for a "constitution" of sorts. Besides, half of the 10 commandments are completely irrelevant to anything. (They just state that god is jealous, basically)
It's fear like this which keeps people from killing each other.
And what a fine job it is doing
Ok, recently, with human corruption growing worse, and all these rapist priests coming out of the closet, my belief in it has gone down the shitter but the truth still remains, without it, we'd all be fucked.
Uh, religion has become MORE civilized and LESS bloodthirsty throughout the years. Compare now to the dark ages. If anything, your belief should be improving.
I don't believe in God, though.
Oh what the fuck I wasted my time

I understand that religion changed the history of the world, but I only feel contempt for it, because of all the damage it has caused in the world, especially with the recent pedo scandal.
I apologise if I sound angsty, but I am very strongly opinionated, especially when the topic is injustice. I absolutely hate it, more than anything else, and with the child rape scandal it just set me off. The fact that the church for so many years has had power and still today can do whatever it likes.

To me he sounds like a perfectly reasonable man :colbert:
IMHO, religion should not be abolished, but prevented from reaching any position of power, at all costs.
And if humans could evolve a bit, maybe, in the future, institutionalized religion will be abolished and people will be reasonable enough to believe in a creator without giving it a name, gender, and lines of dialogue.
