Colin Firth plays King George VI, who, to overcome his stammer, is introduced to Lionel Logue, an unorthodox Australian speech therapist played by Geoffrey Rush. The two men become friends as they work together, and after his brother abdicates, the new king relies on Logue to help him make a radio broadcast at the beginning of World War II.
Characters Prince Albert, Duke of York/King George VI (Colin Firth) The titular King. Albert ("Bertie" to his friends and family) suffers from a heavy stammer as a result of mistreatment by a nanny during his early childhood. Albert is forced into the role of the King when his brother, Edward, abdicates the throne in order to marry a divorced woman. With the help of Lionel Logue, he slowly overcomes his speech impediment for one of the most important speeches of his career. Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) Lionel is the King's speech therapist and closest friend. After some initial uneasiness, Bertie eventually opens up to Lionel, telling him about his early life and trusting him unequivocally. Elizabeth, Duchess of York/Queen Elizabeth I (Helena Bonham Carter Bertie's wife, who initially goes to Lionel for help after seeing Bertie stammer in front of hundreds of thousands of people during an important speech. Elizabeth is very supportive of Bertie, and assists him during exercises to improve his speaking abilities. Edward, Prince of Wales/King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce) Bertie's brother. Edward is briefly made king after his father, George V, passes away. However, he abdicates the throne due to his desire to marry an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, and for his moderate support (but not outright approval) of Hitler's Nazi regime. Stellar acting, an amazing soundtrack, and a topic that has never been seen in-depth in screenplay before. This deserves all of the nominations and awards it received, if not more.
I need to see this movie!
[img_thumb]http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/8323/sspeechposter.jpg[/img_thumb]
Is it just me or is there something wrong with this poster?
idk but this poster is so much better
Awful poster in the OP, change it. I enjoyed the movie though, watched it twice through and I see myself throwing it on once in a while.

Geoffrey Rush was awesome in it. His career will boom now.
Beautiful movie with outstanding performances.
Was a good watch, acting was nice...
I didn't think much of Guy Pearce's performance, imo. I expected better, but whatever... He was overshadowed.
Here's the original speech of King George VI: I think Colin Firth did a pretty good job copying that...
I don't know how Colin Firth managed to win Best actor, the bastard could barely remember his lines

Decent movie but didn't deserve best director and most certainly not best picture
Decent movie but didn't deserve best director and most certainly not best picture
What do you think deserved Best Picture then?
i thought this was gonna be about MLK Jr.
I went into the theatre expecting something boring, came out pleasantly surprised. I don't buy many movies, but I intend to buy the blu-ray.
A true masterpiece, there's no action in this movie yet this movie isn't boring, genius.
A true masterpiece, there's no action in this movie yet this movie isn't boring, genius.
i find most actions these days to be pretty boring action isn't inherently interesting. good action is, which is often missing from movies nowadays. for example one of the best all time actions is terminator 2
What do you think deserved Best Picture then?
The Social Network or 127 hours, preferably the first. This movie was well made but it has been done a million times before and there's really nothing special about it besides the main performances.
What do you think deserved Best Picture then?
Inception, since he won 4 Oscar.
Watched this with my parents. It was very good, but a bit too "happy ending".

Fair enough, you've had a long day. :downs:
Watched this with my parents. It was very good, but a bit too "happy ending".
If you think about it, he talked his people into going into another war. Not quite the happy ending for me.
Watched this with my parents. It was very good, but a bit too "happy ending".
Well it is based on a true story, and it did end in war. The 'good' part was that he pretty much resolved his stutter... which he did IRL. SOOOOoo
Oh no, your archaic and powerless king has a stutter. How exciting.
Oh no, your archaic and powerless king has a stutter. How exciting.
yeah i'm just gonna call you an idiot and leave it at that
Oh no, your archaic and powerless king has a stutter. How exciting.
that's a dumb thing to say watch the movie and realise how dumb you are
