The titular King. Albert ("Bertie" to his friends and family) suffers from a heavy stammer as a result of mistreatment by a nanny during his early childhood. Albert is forced into the role of the King when his brother, Edward, abdicates the throne in order to marry a divorced woman. With the help of Lionel Logue, he slowly overcomes his speech impediment for one of the most important speeches of his career.

Lionel is the King's speech therapist and closest friend. After some initial uneasiness, Bertie eventually opens up to Lionel, telling him about his early life and trusting him unequivocally.

Bertie's wife, who initially goes to Lionel for help after seeing Bertie stammer in front of hundreds of thousands of people during an important speech. Elizabeth is very supportive of Bertie, and assists him during exercises to improve his speaking abilities.

Bertie's brother. Edward is briefly made king after his father, George V, passes away. However, he abdicates the throne due to his desire to marry an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, and for his moderate support (but not outright approval) of Hitler's Nazi regime.

In my opinion, this is one of the greatest films I've ever seen. Stellar acting, an amazing soundtrack, and a topic that has never been seen in-depth in screenplay before. This deserves all of the nominations and awards it received, if not more.

I went into the theatre expecting something boring, came out pleasantly surprised. I don't buy many movies, but I intend to buy the blu-ray.

i find most actions these days to be pretty boring
action isn't inherently interesting. good action is, which is often missing from movies nowadays.
for example one of the best all time actions is terminator 2

The Social Network or 127 hours, preferably the first. This movie was well made but it has been done a million times before and there's really nothing special about it besides the main performances.

If you think about it, he talked his people into going into another war. Not quite the happy ending for me.

Well it is based on a true story, and it did end in war. The 'good' part was that he pretty much resolved his stutter... which he did IRL. SOOOOoo
