www.QuietPlacesComic.com About the comic
I began to work on this comic around the middle of 2010, during my first year of University. I left it entirely for about a year, being caught up in study and assignments and other projects involving words and paint and regular doses of procrastination. Over these Christmas holidays I returned to Quiet Places. One thing led to another and here we are, on the internet, all proper and professional-like. The original inspiration for the comic came from David Troupe’s Buttercup Festival and although Quiet Places has taken its own path I think it’s important to recognise Buttercup Festival‘s influence. The comic is about life and love, and adventure. Happiness. Nature. And, I hope, a good amount of tragedy. A lot of people think comics are there solely to be funny. So maybe this isn’t a comic. Maybe it’s just pictures and words together in little boxes. Maybe they’ll make you laugh, a little. On the inside. Maybe they’ll make you think, too. —- I’d like to thank David Moore, without whom this site wouldn’t have been possible. I’d like to thank all of the comic artists listed at the bottom of this page for being a constant and unfailing source of inspiration. I really love these comics, awesome style. Do you have that comic where they're looking at the power lines? I really liked that one.
I really love these comics, awesome style. Do you have that comic where they're looking at the power lines? I really liked that one.
Thanks! It'll be released over the coming weeks. I know some of you have already seen that one and a couple of others but unfortunately that can't be helped
Do you have a schedule that you plan on releasing on? So I know when to check the page?
lovely comic, man am looking forward for more
Do you have a schedule that you plan on releasing on? So I know when to check the page?
Mondays I thought I'd put that in the blurb but apparently not! Thanks! Xephio - Thanks man!
awesome style you have, soothing and simple.

It’s good to be going back. Hopefully I will make some neato stuff this year. Hopefully I won’t even accidentally set anything on fire, too. These are exciting times." An exciting week: my first successful 3D motion track and composite. Basically, I took some video I shot on a camera, put it into the computer and placed some 3D objects on my kitchen table using the computer, the same way they do with special effects in movies. See the test video (it's not very exciting) . I've also made a poster version of comic no. 3, which should print out at A4 size. It would look great on your bedroom wall or in all of the public places. Click 'download' to get the full sized copy.
This is now become a sketchbook thread!
This is now become a sketchbook thread!
Mine don't come out nearly as clean. What programs are you using for the points? I've been using VooDoo.
I'm using the tracker in Blender 2.6. I'm still trying to make sense of it all though
I'm using the tracker in Blender 2.6. I'm still trying to make sense of it all though
Oh! I was completely unaware that was finished. It's looking great, I'll have to try it out.
Kudos Mal
Thanks Mak
Mine don't come out nearly as clean. What programs are you using for the points? I've been using VooDoo.
Forgot to mention - for the sky ship you could just use After Effects to do a 2D track of the scene. Because the ship is so far away you'd need more than a few meters of left-right movement to alter the viewing angle of the ship, therefore you don't really need a 3D track for it
Blenderguru has a really good tracking tutorial. A very good way to start: http://www.blenderguru.com/videos/introduction-to-camera-tracking I already saw the comics on your dA. I really like the style.
No. 6 www.quietplacescomic.com —————————————————- I was on the internet this week and I found this awesome video of a Lego space shuttle being lifted by a weather balloon (I think) into the upper atmosphere. I looked up the music in the background and found that it came from this band: they're amazing. -- Last year I did series of twelve blog entries researching the video game industry, looking at everything from gameplay design to plot creation to the different roles within development companies. I spent some time looking at Mass Effect 2, and I stumbled upon this delicious piece of concept art which shows the 'Illusive Man' sitting in his ship, watching a dying star. This somewhat inspired inspired a very short story that I wrote late last night. It's not very descriptive and it doesn't reveal very much. It's more a series of short visions into a larger story; linked but not fully explained. The story follows: ---- "Now, I'm afraid," the old man said, "I must draw your attention to the end of the world". He led them through another automatic door and into a large room. Metal desks covered in buttons and switches stood in rows along its length. Wires stretched from wall to ceiling. A few lights blinks dimly. And beyond a huge glass window, surrounded by stars, hung a burning planet. The old man broke the silence. "Death is no longer cold. Nor lonely." He met their stares with a sad smile. "Why did you save us?" He looked back out at the swirling flames for a moment. "I didn't." Minutes passed before the youngest asked, "Is this heaven?" The old man chuckled, briefly, as though he had realised part way through that it was inappropriate. "No, this isn't heaven. You died, just like everybody else. Blinding light, roaring heat, and then you were nowhere. Or everywhere, if that's what you'd rather believe." "So where are we?" The child stepped forward, carefully. "With me." ---- It's not perfect, but it's something. I might finish it one day.
This now a sketchbook thread fo' reals.

bewtiful as always, the clouds look a bit flat though [editline]19th march 2012[/editline] actually it looks like the clouds are balloons attached with strings [editline]19th march 2012[/editline] wait is that the point

The lines were supposed to represent either rain (in the same way that clouds get vertically blurred undersides when you see them raining in the far distance) or the shadows the clouds cast in the atmosphere when the sky is darkish and the sun is bright. It didn't quite work out here though I drew this one about 18 months ago though, so always learning [editline]20th March 2012[/editline]
Hey, I've been wondering something. I asked a couple of people what they thought and they enjoyed having the edges of the different bits of paper visible I also quite like the imperfect look it gives the comics =D
