Unless you've been living in a sensory-deprivation chamber for the past few weeks, you've heard of the "ice bucket challenge" being shown off on all types of social media. People get buckets of ice water dumped on them in order to encourage donations to the ALS Association, the foundation that supports research and care for those living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a muscle disease that's also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. It's impossible to know exactly what makes something like the ice bucket challenge go viral. Whatever the case may be, the sensation been an incredible benefit for the ALS Association. Yesterday, the group said it has raised $94.3 million since July 29, compared to just $2.7 million during the same time period last year. That's nearly 35 times as much money. It's great news for a worthy charity, but the cause has led to an unfortunate legal move. The ALS Association has filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office seeking to trademark the term "ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE" for use in charitable fundraising. If successful, that would allow the ALS Association to stop other charities from using the phrase for their own fundraising.
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2014/08/als-group-moves-to-trademark-ice-bucket-challenge-viral-sensation/
God damn it
No no this is a good thing It means we won't have people doing Ice Bucket Challenges for every charity event for the next hundred years.
Don't worry they'll make varieties, such as the "pretty cold bucket challenge", "ice container challenge" and "ice bucket dare".
LOL so other people don't do it, talk about greedy when 1/3 of the donations go to actual research and the rest goes to the Big Boss making 400 grand a year and taking million dollar trips.
If successful, that would allow the ALS Association to stop other charities from using the phrase for their own fundraising.
What kind of shitty person would try to prevent charities from raising money?
Don't worry they'll make varieties, such as the "pretty cold bucket challenge", "ice container challenge" and "ice bucket dare".
Personally I'm fond of the Freezing Water Shower Trials.
What kind of shitty person would try to prevent charities from raising money?
People like Zoey Quinn
People like Zoey Quinn
Ok we get it Zoe Quinn did a bad thing, can we not shove our agendas in to unrelated threads
People like Zoey Quinn
Jesus Fucking Christ do I have to hear about that fucking bitch in every single thread I read?

The largest chunk is actually education which is 32%.
What kind of shitty person would try to prevent charities from raising money?
They're not trying to prevent other charities from raising money; they're preventing them from using the Ice Bucket Challenge as a means to do so. I'm conflicted on this. On one hand, who the hell cares? People will jump on the bandwagon and donate as we've seen. On the other hand, I'm sure there are other creative ways to raise awareness for whatever else charities work towards.
Why?
Don't worry, we'll start a new trend Candy Bucket Challenge Oh wait
Don't worry, we'll start a new trend Candy Bucket Challenge Oh wait
Write a Saga challe- Fuck.
I think it's funny that this whole ice bucket challenge business came about during SUMMER. I would like to see people do it in the winter time.
Don't worry they'll make varieties, such as the "pretty cold bucket challenge", "ice container challenge" and "ice bucket dare".
I'd like to see the hot coal bucket challenge. That'd make things a lot more interesting.
I think it's funny that this whole ice bucket challenge business came about during SUMMER. I would like to see people do it in the winter time.
It's almost as if there is no such thing as the southern hemisphere
It's almost as if there is no such thing as the southern hemisphere
I haven't seen a lot of challenge videos coming from Australia though. Usually it's in suburban America on a hot ass day.
The ice bucket challenge honestly just annoys me. I understand that it's already raised a huge amount of money, and I'm happy for that, but if there wasn't a gimmick like that, no one would do it. Not to mention the fact that most people do it wrong anyway! You're supposed to dump ice water on your head AND (see, that's not an or) donate $10 to the ALS foundation.
ALS doesn't even kill that many people yearly compared to other diseases. I don't know why everyone jumped on this bandwagon.

That's a pretty odd challenge you're basically forcing people to donate money by nominating them?
OR donate $100 instead?? That's a pretty odd challenge you're basically forcing people to donate money by nominating them?
If you feel like this is forcing you to donate then you need to work on your ability to say no. I was challenged a couple times and in both instances I declined because I just don't have the money. Nobody is putting a gun to your head and in most if not all instances everyone will forget anyway.
I haven't seen a lot of challenge videos coming from Australia though. Usually it's in suburban America on a hot ass day.
Didn't go looking Anyway, because it is cold, here's this clip
You're supposed to dump ice water on your head AND (see, that's not an or) donate $10 to the ALS foundation.
the whole point was that you either donate, or if you don't want to/can't donate, you 'punish' yourself with the cold water and a video to tell other people to donate or forward the message. People have taken to doing both because they want to forward the message anyway
Why?
Probably to prevent this from happening, which is the reason we have trademarks in the first place. [editline]29th August 2014[/editline]
ALS doesn't even kill that many people yearly compared to other diseases. I don't know why everyone jumped on this bandwagon.
I don't understand these arguments. People are still dying and suffering, and rare diseases rely even more on donations because they receive so little in government funding. Saying one charity deserves donations more just because more people are dying is a pretty weak argument.

Not saying you did, obviously. There's always a proper reasoning, but social stigmas still come around.
If someone can make money off something there WILL be a fight for the rights to that something. This is true even if charity is involved. The ALS people have no idea how much, if any, money this challenge thng will be worth in the future. It could be zero, it could be worth $100 million per year. So they want to lock it down now. The only reason I'm against them doing this is because the PEOPLE are what made the challenge a success, not the person/s who thought up the challenge. Without all the people doing it then it'd be worth nothing.
My Boiling Water Bucket challenge can finally kick off!
