Disney researchers have found a way for people to "feel" the texture of objects seen on a flat touchscreen.
The technique involves sending tiny vibrations through the display that let people "feel" the shallow bumps, ridges and edges of an object.
The vibrations fooled fingers into believing they were touching a textured surface, said the Disney researchers.
The vibration-generating algorithm should be easy to add to existing touchscreen systems, they added.
Perhaps this will be the technology that finally revives goatse as the forum thread crasher of choice
I can only expect what can come out of this, probably porn that you can feel or some shit.
I will finally be able to touch my waifu.
Thinking about it, this is a really simple idea. Amazed it wasn't thought of much sooner to be honest.
I remember seeing a video of a system like this in action a month or so back, not made by Disney though. Wonder if they got bought or if this thing is completely different?
Feels like bags of sand

Dude they said feeling bumps and ridges, not sticking your hand into the grand canyon
For me being technologically stuck in the past, I like this idea.

I know what you're talking about, I can't find it either and was geared toward tablets and phones
but what I did recall after searching for its disney's previous attempt at this.

wonder why they made this other haptic feedback. Did the other method have problems affecting practice use, was it expanding made to expand disney's set of tools for future use, could they both be combined together?
This sounds like haptic feedback.

Oh
It seems that this is a good sign for the Steam Controller.
If you listen very carefully you can almost hear the sound Peter Molyneux's pencil scratching down a thousand game ideas.
Could you make braille phones using this tech?
I remember seeing something like this at CES either this year or last year.
David Firth kinda predicted this:
