• Anyone here who can do scream vocals?

I've been trying to learn to scream (inspirations are Lamb Of God and Arch Enemy) and I've got the basic fry noise down, I can do it with various overtones too. I can do it for hours, it doesn't hurt. The problem is, when I try to go louder, I can't, it feels like there's a physical barrier or something. Is anyone on the same boat/had the same problem in the past?
Learning to do death metal vocals myself, I think you just need to practise more to be able to go louder.
Right now I can do it a bit louder than normal speaking voice. It might be growing louder because of the practice, but very, very slowly.
Yeah it's really easy, all you have to do is pick up something fairly heavy, say a brick for example, and drop it on your foot. Works everytime

Although you most likely will be able to go louder with practice Don't force yourself to be loud. It isn't about being as loud as possible
Bro I have no idea but be careful and look up proper techniques Don't fuck yourself up, take it slow
Usually they are not very loud, if you look at them in live concerts you see they get near the mic when they scream. If you push it to be loud you can hurt yourself.
I can do high growls (like Angela of Arch Enemy) and Petri Lindroos' vocal style on Ensiferum's latest album, but not quite as good. His voice on that album is like... High guttural vocals, if you know what I mean? It's a midtone which I can't quite get. I find low growls hard though. Also I REALLY want to get a sound similar to Jari Maenpaa but that is fucking hard to get. Ex Ensiferum singer and current Wintersun everything-except-drums-ist, but he got a full band now (after releasing the album though) I can't growl that well, but I'm getting the hang of it. I know how to do it, still some stuff to learn though.
Out of interest, where/when do you guys practise 'singing'? I only ever do it when my parents are out.
I wish I could do extreme vocals. Of any fashion. I practice with my music all the time, but the most I can get is a half-assed rasp, like This Ending. Only This Ending does it better. Sometimes I can get a really deep, gurgling rasp, but it's random and sporadic - and if I take a pause or swallow, chances are, I'll lose it. :saddowns:
Well how loud can you do it at the moment? There'll be a point where you can't go much louder, and if you push it too hard you'll damage your voice. Some vocalists can't go very loud and because of that have their vocals amplified a lot during recording.
CAn you tell me what guide you used to learning this, OP? I want to learn LoG/Sodom-style vocals too :v:

[QUOTE=mynames2long;24363730]CAn you tell me what guide you used to learning this, OP? I want to learn LoG/Sodom-style vocals too :v:[/QUOTE] The Zen Of Screaming DVD 1&2 by Melissa Cross. Also it's a little louder than a speaking voice, but it doesn't sound as "airy" as a scream should. I need to find someone IRL who can scream properly and listen to them, heh

I can do lower pitch growls ok. But more like Kalmah style growl is where I'm best at right now.
Apart from what you may have heard, you just need to get it to a little over talking volume. There's a reason why there's microphones and audio programs. [editline]10:40PM[/editline] Also, when using a mic, cup your hands around the end(the part that you sing into, don't know the name), so the sound is focused into the mic, and other sounds are blocked out. It makes it a lot louder then not cupping.
I can do low growls and at a moderately loud volume. I am getting better at making my high screams not so skippy and cracking, and I haven't gotten the volume issue completely down with them yet. But I am surely getting better. I'm pretty sure that you already know how to scream/growl. All you need to do is practice while listening to the music you want to sound like. In time, your 'barrier' will be naturally pushed without damaging anything. It has taken me a couple of years to get to my current intensity, but it wasn't difficult. tl;dr: Time/Practice is the key. Don't push yourself. [editline]12:01AM[/editline] [QUOTE=mikerocks;24376115]I can do lower pitch growls ok.
