Star of Bethlehem might have actually been Jupiter
Interpreting events as depicted in the Bible is no easy task. Although it is well known that some events in its text can be pinned on a moment in history, it takes a lot of work to separate the fact from the fiction.
But there is one significant event in the Bible that scholars have debated for centuries: The Star of Bethlehem.
Throughout the years, the fabled drifting star has been pinned on an array of possible cosmic events. Was it a comet? Was it a distant supernova? Perhaps it was neither, argues BBC astronomer and Discovery News contributor Mark Thompson.
In the run-up to the Christmas season, Thompson decided to do some research into what the Star of Bethlehem could have been. It had to be a significant event for "The Three Wise Men," as depicted in the Gospel of Matthew, to follow to Jesus' birthplace.
Naturally, there's a lot of uncertainty about the accuracy and validity of the Bible's interpretations about what happened over 2,000 years ago, but Thompson discovered a significant astronomical event that might explain what happened.
After scouring through historical records and using computer simulations of the positions of the planets and stars as they would have appeared, he thinks the Star of Bethlehem could be explained by the motion of Jupiter.
Lordy.
It doesn't have to have an explanation.
"But... It has to be a real star! Thats what I've always been told!"
There are many things it could have been, it could have been a hyper nova for all we know.
I remember reading about this months ago
There are many things it could have been, it could have been a hyper nova for all we know.
Could have been nothing at all, ever.
It was Cthulhu's eye.
And not a shit was given.

Cthulhu
Silly jews
I always assumed it was a pocket of swamp gas capturing and amplifying the light of Venus.
All you people are dumb, it clearly was the reptilians.
IT WAS THE LIGHT OF OUR LAWD AND SAVIOUR :downs:
Honestly I don't see why anything Godly (provided true) would need a scientific explanation to you guys. If God truly were an omnipotent being, then couldn't he do anything he wished, without needing any science behind it?
btw according to the story the star stuck around for atleast 2 years
the wisemen used it to reach jesus but they didnt reach him till his toddler years.
Maybe the whole Bible is just a long list of coincidences?

Fixed.
I thought a large chunk of the bible was just made up. Hell, I don't think Jesus Christ actually existed, but apparently it's largely accepted he did.
What I learned was that it was a nova (not a supernova) that rose in the morning (so only would have been visible in the east since the wise men actually came from Africa) and that it was 5 years too early.

He did, he just didn't look like this

The Star Of Bethlehem story might actually not be a true myth.
Do you think Jesus masturbated when he was a teenager?
I thought this was established like, five or so years ago.

Or maybe it's a long list of horseshit?

Yeah well people like to cite the Bible as the evidence, they have nothing except writings that were written hundreds of years afterwards.

So obviously wasn't Jupiter. It was the Lord God.
I think it's really ignorant to state that Jesus Christ never existed, despite the numerous physical records of him -- when at the same going on to complain about Christians not using facts.
It's obvious that Jesus existed. The question isn't whether he existed. The question is whether he was a holy man or not. For sure, he was a benevolent man, but the myths surrounding him are so extreme that his intentions are twisted beyond belief.
