Texas school district arms teachers and posts warning signs
The Argyle Independent School District in north Texas has started the 2014-15 school year, as KDAF-TV noted, “with guns blazing” — or, rather, with newly armed teachers who have been given the right to use them “to protect our students.”
KDAF reported that all teachers who are given a gun must obtain a license to carry it, pass a psychological evaluation and get training in how to use the weapon. Signs like the one below have been posted at all four of the schools in the small district.
That makes me okay with this.
I see nothing wrong with this, teachers are probably the sanest people in Texas to carry a gun.
I have no issues with this. Hopefully more places start doing this, and it reduces the amount of school shootings.
It's pretty sad how a state/country has to arm teachers because of the nutjobs around them instead of focusing on the main issue which is mental health
The picture of a screaming eagle on the sign is a bit much, but other than that it seems fine.

And that should be the standard.
So many anti-gunners like to tell everyone that if they are teachers they'll simply give the teachers guns and tell them to be on their way. They won't.

That's their mascot

I doubt it will reduce the amount. More likely it will see them shunted towards unarmed schools or seem shootings drastically shorted if they go near an armed school.

I figured it was, still makes the whole thing look a bit 'Murica.
I sure as shit hope they're following safety procedures on locking the guns away because I can see high school kids getting a kick out of trying to find their teachers' gun.
America sure is going down the shitter
Yes, lets do anything to stop shooting rather than guarantee people won't start then.

I don't think there's even a slight bit of infrastructure to mentally screen every single person to see if they could possibly do something like a school shooting.
And arming teachers like this doesn't necessarily mean there is no focus on mental healthy anyway. Doing this doesn't take away from doing the other.
Also the fact that a person could be mentally sane one day, then crack and go on a shooting spree the next.

While improving the mental health system would certainly help, it won't catch everyone. A multi-layered system is best.
But what if a teacher snaps ?
But what if a teacher snaps ?
the other teachers r armed and will use whatever force necessary to protect their students, i guess

Isn't this pretty much how rape is handled? I know I may be an ass for comparing the two, but I'd much rather have us take preventative measures than tackle the much much MUCH bigger problem.

This kind of comment can be made for almost literally any kind of solution for any kind of problem. In effect, it is completely meaningless.

I'd say the same rules applies to society in general. WE should make sure these things dont happen rather than make sure we can stop it. Ofcourse, people should be able stop and have some basic knowledge, but we are going to the extreme. Must we really have guns in school ? I am all for right to carry a gun, i am just against the right to irrationalize it.

If a teacher snapped they could just bring in one of their personal guns, doesn't really change much.

The eagle is a really nice touch, otherwise it would literally be "ATTENTION: VIOLENT IMPLICATIONS."

Except Police enforce the law and require a firearm in case someone goes ballistic on them. Teachers enforce class room law but they teach, they shouldn't have to be getting a firearm, that's what the sad bit is.

Of course if you're in the UK police just don't have no firearms to make them on the same level as civilians, something I wouldn't mind being trialled in Australia

Well, lets put it this way:
Scenario 1:
A teacher snaps, they are unarmed at school, they go home, grab a gun and because they've snapped they don't care about the 'no guns in school rule' and shoot up the place.
Scenario 2:
A teacher snaps, they're armed, they shoot up a school, they get put down by other teachers.
Scenario two will on average have less deaths than scenario one.
Great, a big sign in front of the school telling all the students "This country is so violent and crazy that our teachers need to have guns to keep students from killing each other."
Statistically speaking, if their guns every get used, it will probably be against a student. The chance of an outsider coming in to randomly shoot up a school is vanishingly small compared to student-perpetrated shootings. So it also carries the implicit message "We are prepared to shoot and kill you if we think you're going to try anything". What a wonderful learning environment!
If you absolutely feel like your school needs to have guns at the ready, keep them in a locked drawer at the guard station or something. Every classroom teacher doesn't need a gun.

there is no evidence to support the notion that this is a bad thing. come back with a psychological study or SOMETHING other than your perceived ideas.

Everyone says we need to fix mental health but never says how, otherwise it just feels like buzzword like gun control.

You make it sound like they are all infected by the Thing and are just waiting to go blarghagagag at random
