IONIA, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan judge whose smartphone disrupted a hearing in his own courtroom has held himself in contempt and paid $25 for the infraction....
...During a break in the trial, Voet fined himself. He says if he can't live by the rules he enforces he has no business enforcing the rules.
One law for everyone at it's finest. He's lucky he didn't give himself a community sentence or a short spell in jail, really.
even the judge gets in trouble
Well he's a strict, but also a honest man.
Rare to see that at once these days.
That is simultaneously hilarious and pretty cool at the same time.
Are people allowed mobile phones in court? When I had to go to court (I wasn't in trouble) they searched us and took our electronic stuff

People associated with the judicial branch are able to carry Camera's, cellphones, etc. You can too however you have to put yourself as a press witness or something.
I hadn't been naughty btw, my friend had been beaten up
luckily the defendant did a guilty plea before the proceeding so I didn't have to give evidence which was good because I was rather drunk that night and didn't specifically remember that person being there :v:

I was in court once for work experience, and they made me take the battery out of my phone. I was allowed to keep the phone though.

Give this man a medal. You know how many cops I see texting/talking while driving, here in Michigan that's illegal.

Same in Virginia but it isn't concidered a "Cell phone" it is considered and communications device. Most of their phones have a walky-talky functionality to avoid this "no cell law"
Artist's impression of the moment the phone sounded:

not all courtrooms do searches. my court didn't perform searches until about 2 years ago when they got a metal detector from dhs or some shit.

I have a stereo with a built in bluetooth receiver so I can answer/hangup calls by pressing a button on it. They passed the no cell law about 3 months after I installed it, it's hands free so it's exempt from the law.

Illegal in my state as well, but I've followed cops down half a highway where they just stared at their laptops and didn't look at the road for 4 seconds or more at a time. Friend of mine claims she saw one watching a movie once.

Here in SoCal they don't much care. Done jury duty twice now and visited to sit in on a few cases for a class I was taking, they have a metal detector and x-ray machine but they didn't say anything about my drinks, phone, laptop, etc.
I even had nail clippers in there once (took it on a trip and must've forgotten to take them out) and they didn't even mention it.
Just the other day I was wondering, "Can you sue a Judge?"
