A sturdy Volvo is great as a first-time car, or if you just want something to comfortably take you from point A to point B.

They're also incredibly popular among young mechanically interested people here, due to "[I]classical Swedish engineering!!!1[/I]" and for how relatively easy they are to tinker with.

Practically every town has its own gang of teenage Volvo-enthusiasts driving around in their modified (and occasionally chip-tuned) 80's and 90's boxes.
