A new study, based on responses to a 2013 trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, found that audiences want trailers which excite, tease and leave them emotionally engaged, without revealing excessive narrative. The research by the University of East Anglia's (UEA) school of art, media and American studies, found that more than 80 per cent of people were left disappointed with a film after seeing its trailer.
In some cases the promos create expectations that feature films are unable to deliver on and are often considered better than the full film, the researchers added.
And many viewers were frustrated at spoilers contained within the trailers.
Lead researcher Keith M Johnston said: "Despite the enduring appeal and apparent popularity of these coming attractions, modern trailer releases arrive with a perceived popular stigma - the presumption that they actively mislead or deceive audiences.
"Our research confirms this complaint. But we also found that audiences are aware of those issues when they watch a trailer, and find trailers enjoyable despite the expectations that a marketing campaign might set up.
"The key message to trailer producers, however, is that audiences want to be excited and teased about forthcoming films, to be emotionally engaged without feeling pummelled by excessive narrative revelation."
The fucking trailer for Superman was more exciting than the movie.
before I click the video does it give away to much to The Hobbit and Hunger Games
Yeah doesn't this new Hobbit trailer straight up show a major character getting killed?
I'm pretty sure I saw [sp] Thranduil killing Tauriel. [/sp]
Remember that trailer for some action movie that actually gave away the major twist?
When I watched interstellar yesterday a bunch of people just closed their eyes and covered their ears during some trailers.
Going into a movie completely blind can make it such a better experience.
The trailer for Cast Away was one giant spoiler.
The Director even admitted it IIRC
The trailer for Terminator Salvation spoiled one of the most important parts of the movie :v:
seriously why even bother with big twists when you're just going to straight up reveal them in the trailer

worst is if they showed the trailer for interstellar at a showing of interstellar
i fucking hate it when cinemas do that
The trailer for Godzilla definitely spoilt it for me. It gave the impression the entire time that Godzilla and Bryan Cranston would be duking it out. :(
Totally agree. A few movies actually give the ENDING away in commercials/trailers. The viewer would only actually realize it if they saw the film.

Imagine if it was anything like this. That would be fucking amazing
fuck trailers, each and every one of them are misleading and useless.
I have no clue why people need to watch them to see if a movie is good.
Terminator 4 had a great trailer and it was one of the worst disasters of all time:

That's okay, we can all be like the Doctor Who Season 8 teaser trailer that simply shows the title of a show that's been running for fifty years, flashes a picture of a bygone iTunes advertisement that's supposed to resemble the titular character, the logo of a show that we're already familiar with along with some special effects and music.
WEEEOOOOOOO, WEEOOOOWEEEEE.
But of course, that's a TV show trailer made by a showrunner that's a notoriously lying asshole - not film.
A description and a few pictures is all I need for movies now
Movies are so much better when you go in knowing pretty much nothing
I never watch those "next time on ---" previews at the end of a show. I'd rather not know anything about the plot of the next episode beforehand. I'm gonna watch it anyway so why spoil it for me? What makes it worse is when I'm watching a different show on the same channel and one of the commercials is the preview I didn't want to see.
I'm totally spoiler proof, even to the point that sometimes I go to wikipedia to see the plot. However, I do agree that most of the times, spoilers are giving false hope that the film is good. Even worse if the spoiler have a scene that is cool, but it isn't in the movie at all. See The Last Airbender

that's not spoiling though that's just a misleading trailer. on the same subject, i also thought the trailers gave the impression that godzilla was gonna be full of suspense while there was barely any in the final film
and how news paper tells how a certain superhero is going to die 2 full months before the issue.

Like Metro 2033, luckily I forgot what I remember from watching 4pp and can experience the game new.
I hate when I watch movies for the first time and I notice scenes that I've seen before in trailers. Makes me feel like I've seen the movie before.
We all know that what trailer audiences really want is more BWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMM
Movie trailers should just copy video game trailers and be self contained mini stories that give people the gist of what their movie is about and the tone and whatnot without actually giving away any scenes from the final movie.
Troma is the absolute worst at making trailers
Not only do they have their trailers in the beginning of the films, often they show a trailer for the movie that you're going to see, and they fucking reveal everything. (fucking VHS)
Like in Surf Nazis Must Die, they fuuucking show when Leroys mom shoves her pistol in Adolfs mouth, plus, they show all the action scenes from the movie in the trailer, making the movie totally useless if you've seen the trailer. (Not that SNMD is a good movie though)
The Alien trailer was fucking killer. The creature wasn't even in the trailer. No announcer guy, no showcasing big actor names, just scenes from the movie, and a really ominous sound.

The Alien trailer was indeed amazing, but not all trailers from "back in the day" were good, even for great movies. The trailer for John Carpenter's The Thing, for instance, gave away several people who get infected. There's like 8 people in the whole damn movie, you just gave away half the plot.

Oh yeah I agree. I wasn't implying that all trailers from back then were good, in fact during the even earlier days it wouldn't be unusual for almost the entire plot to be revealed or spoiled in some way.
The worst is with the shitty comedies where they put the 5 good jokes in the trailer.
Gone Girl was one of the more well done trailers in recent memory, they showed a lot and gave away nothing about the movie

IMO the worst trailers are the ones that include a fart joke followed by total silence and an out-of-context response.
