I've been trying to replicate this effect but i can't get it to work properly

What i don't understand is how the mario footage stays tracked with the original footage, the tracking points eventually go off frame and can no longer be used. Right? Anyone have any ideas?
You can have many different tracker groups. When the points go off screen, you can track new points and link them to the footage.
To do the effect shown in the video you will have to define the 2d planes and attatch the mario footage to it. I reccomend the krater tutorial from videocopilot.net to acchive this effect.
Use a 3D tracker such as PFtrack or Boujou to get you a 3d camera solve instead
(imagine a 3d camera in AE that mimics the real camera 1:1) i grantee thats how he did it

Voodoo is a free 3D tracker/camera solve

Seconded.
using regular motion tracking for this kind is kinda hard because of all the noisy textures.
If you wanted to you could also use Mocha for AE, it comes with AE CS4 and CS5, its a little harder than the 3d track, but at the same time easier than the shitty point tracking system

thats a great tutorial for the job, im sure if you dont own boujou its similar in Voodoo
