Donald Trump plans to elevate FCC commissioner Ajit Pai to lead the agency, replacing outgoing Chairman Tom Wheeler, Politico reports, citing sources familiar with the matter. An official announcement could come as soon as this afternoon.
Pai, first appointed by President Obama for a Republican seat on the commission, has been a reliably conservative voice, often speaking out for deregulation and opposing progressive measures from the Democratic majority. He has widely been seen as a frontrunner in the race for a new chairman, and while it was suggested he may be made interim leader, Politico reports the move is permanent.
When the Wheeler-led FCC’s net neutrality rules were passed in 2015, Pai was one of the most vocal sources of dissent, along with fellow Republican commissioner Michael O'Rielly. After Trump’s ascent to the presidency, concluding with today’s inauguration, those rules are in danger, and Pai’s nomination will do little to ease concerns for supporters of the rules.
I really, REALLY hope this is just false speculation and that /pol/ didnt actually meme a anti-netneutrality cabinet into office
Honestly, say good bye to net neutrality.
As over reactive as we can be about other issues, unlike Wheeler, this guy is a dingo, and he is out to be predatory. If you listen to him speak on these matters, he's entirely for companies like Comcast getting more power.
hoping that huge companies like google and wikipedia protest this like they did with SOPA
How will this affect the internet experiences of ppl outside of the US?

Negatively, but we have no idea to what scale we're talking about. It could be minor, or it could be major.
For Canada, expect to see Net Neutrality die up here as well. We just follow their lead on that shit

The biggest impact will be for American Internet users (their plans are about to get wildly jacked if net neutrality goes out the window, including every American on /pol/ and r/the_donald), but it'll also impact American online services, like Netflix. If the big ISPs put the screws to Netflix because they can, forcing it to jack up its prices, I doubt it'll jack them up only for the American market.
One thing's for certain, it's not going to improve anyone's experience at all, unless we're talking about the experiences of the CEOs of Comcast and Verizon and so on.

I have hopes for the CRTC since they've fairly resisted at least some of the utter retardation going on down south. Canada's ISPs have challenges America's don't (1/10th the population spread out over a huge area, for one) and the usage-based billing precedent was a cockslap in the face, but it has at least not turned into total fuckery yet.

It's not, i actually posted an article about this guy over a month ago https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1544690 , I can only imagine the reaction of /pol/ posters(and quite a few trump supporters in general) if they really do kill net neutrality :v: , the meltdown will be amazing.

That implies admitting they're wrong.
Even if that could happen, the_donald mods don't allow negative talk - when some supporters were softly questioning Trump's cabinet picks (DeVos, Perry, etc), the threads were locked and some users were banned because "trump knows what he's doing". Cults of personality cannot be shattered.

And when the internet deteriorates too badly to ignore, they'll blame Obama and the NSA...

Well they might stop ignoring it when they can no longer access their the_donald safespace without paying a bunch of fees and a 500mb data cap.

Just donated $25 to the EFF. Thanks for sharing those links.
I was talking about this whole net neutrality thing with my brother and he said that they can't let ISPs do whatever the fuck they want because the internet was legally defined as a utility and not a service.
I wasn't certain about this at first, but considering that this was apparently ruled by the FCC, could they change easily the status of the internet just like that now that somebody who opposed this ruling is now in charge of the FCC?

/pol/ is probably going to spend the next few years slowly wasting away like /b/ did in the aftermath of Chanology. By the time Net Neutrality dies it'll likely be a shell of its current self.

I donated to the ACLU on election night :v:
Almost forgot about the EFF, they're quiet outside of stuff like SOPA/PIPA/TPP/WTFBBQ, 25 buckaroos for them too

While i'm pretty sure they'll try to spin it in over a hundred ways, attempt to ignore it/etc, this directly fucks with every single one of them, so you can bet quite a few will rage/have meltdowns. There is also the fact that if trump really does kill net neutrality, his popularity will sink even further, making it even harder for the obsessed to defend him, it might even become a campaign talking point for your democrats to use to get back into power.
The_donald and others ignore everything else because it doesn't affect them directly(or at least not as hard as it does minorities/etc), this will, more than anyone else. :v:

I'm an hour away from google fiber, and stuck with centurylink - who, while not having stated or known bandwidth caps, are notoriously hated nonetheless due to the sheer inconsistent quality of their broadband. As we speak, for the past couple of hours now my net has repeatedly shut itself on and off from the DNS servers and I have no way of doing anything about it from my side of the matter seemingly.
I'm sick of hearing about this guy. But I guess we should prepare to kiss net neutrality goodbye at this rate.

The Humble Indie Bundle lets you set your charity to the EFF, too. In case you needed MORE incentive.
Wouldn't it be hilarious if after meming Trump into office, /pol/ ended up killing itself via this appointment?

a bittersweet form of justice if you ask me.
So net neutrality being dead potentially means big media providing companies. like Netflix. move out of the country to host stuff elsewhere, thus meaning American jobs are lost. GG Trump.

Sort of, without neutrality you could ask residing companies to pay you and have their traffic prioritized. This would leave out foreign companies. This is what people are most afraid of.
Well it was nice knowing you all.
This cabinet is entirely made up of fucking morons.

Eh, I don't know if I'd call them morons so much as I'd call them corrupt dickheads.
i really hope tom wheeler was right and that they will have to prove to the courts that net neutrality has a negative impact

They'll just go back to meeting in fields with white hoods like they used to.
