A Tibetan protester who set himself on fire in India during a demo against a visit by the Chinese president has died from his injuries in hospital.
Jamphel Yeshi sustained burns to 98 per cent of his body when he sprinted for 50m outside the Indian Parliament building engulfed in flames in New Delhi on Monday.
The 27-year-old had been protesting against China's continued rule over Tibet and collapsed in flames as other protesters tried to put him out.
Yeshi died just hours before Chinese president Hu Jintao's expected arrival in New Delhi.
He was on fire perhaps less than two minutes, but some of his clothing had disintegrated and his skin was mottled with black, burned patches by the time he was driven to a hospital.
Yeshi, 27, escaped from Tibet in 2006 and had been living in New Delhi for the past two years, activists said.
He collapsed after around 50m as fellow protesters beat out the flames with Tibetan flags they were carrying.
Yeshi was later treated for severe burns at a New Delhi hopital, one Tibetan organiser said.
He made the dramatic protest as Chinese President Hu Jintao prepared to arrive in India later this week for a summit meeting.

More than 600 protesters, carrying banners and posters, marched across New Delhi to a central plaza near the Indian Parliament to hold a protest meeting.
Some carried posters saying 'Tibet is burning' and 'Tibet is not part of China'.
Mr Hu was due to arrive today for a summit with India, Russia, Brazil and South Africa.
Indian police have surrounded Tibetan enclaves in New Delhi and made hundreds of arrests.
At the protest venue on Monday a big poster featuring Mr Hu's face with a bloody palm print on it said: 'Hu Jin Tao is unwelcome' at the summit.
As speakers addressed the crowd, the protester set himself ablaze and ran across the venue.
After witnessing the man set himself on fire, one onlooker, Tenzin Dorjee, said: 'This is what China faces unless they give freedom to Tibet.'
At least 30 people in Tibet have set themselves on fire over the past year in protest at Chinese rule over their homeland.
The Dalai Lama has blamed China's 'ruthless policy' for the self-immolations. China accuses the Dalai Lama of stirring up trouble.
China says Tibet has always been part of its territory. Tibetans say the Himalayan region was virtually independent for centuries.
Well that was stupid of him

They do it as a form of protest, it's basically showing how dedicated they are to their cause, that they are willing to give up their lives to show how strong the feelings that they have about it are.

But then they'll be dead when tibet has been free'd, so they wont experience that.

Ever think that freedom for your family and friends might be worth dying for?
reminds me a lot of Thich Quang Duc's protest.

do I even need to bother pointing out how stupid this post is

Doesn't matter if they experience it - that's the point. They see it as a form of alturistic suicide - the media that it draws, in addition to the fact that it shows dedication is designed to inspire others. They are past caring for themselves, they care for the movement as a whole.
The Dalai Lama doesn't support it, though, and if you view it as personal injury, it's also against Buddhism, though it could also be argued that the fire does the harm, not you.

Dear Tibet: Over twenty of you have set yourselves on fire to protest Chinese authority.
Do you know how many fucks were given by China? Not even one fuck. Not even half a fuck. The amount of fuckage given may be so low that you OWE china fucks.
You should probably stop setting yourselves on fire and start setting Chinese authority figures and structures on fire. That tends to be a pretty effective means in the course of human history of eventually getting what you want. Peaceful protest works only under very specific circumstances. This is not one of those circumstances.

This happens quite a lot. Just a few days ago a nun did the same thing.

fuck off
Just like that Rage Against the Machine album cover!!
Generally people tend to shy away from supporting causes in which members of it commit suicide in a horribly painful way.
It's like a cult almost.

That's kind of the point of Martyrdom, not everyone is as self centred as you.

Buddhist monks have done this form of protest many times. As long as the person who does it doesn't hurt anyone else they're generally looked up to.
God damn, those photos...
Those photos are incredibly striking.

Darkness can only be over come by light. Freedom will come for Tibet some day, but perhaps violence is not the most optimal means for achieving that freedom.
Not that I'm advocating self-immolation, but it is a powerful sentiment.
Sheer badass, He is a true hero for his people.
Well, this is unnerving... why do those photos makes me feel in the mood for barbecue?
Its scary how much pain burning alive would be, feeling immense pain in literally every place possible in your body.

The Chinese government is very well known for not giving a shit about protests or protesters. Honestly the only method that seems like it would work with them is a violent upheaval.
You forget that this is the country that is well known for running over its own civilian protesters with tanks because they wouldn't disperse, why would they care about some random Tibetan in India? I wouldn't put it past them to light him on fire themselves, given the chance.

and in such a painful way
I think this guy is an idiot as it never works and the shock value of it happening has worn off now.
I cry when I get a partial burning on my finger, imagine your whole entire body engulfed in flames.
I truly hope things like this don't go in vain.
I truly hope things like this don't go in vain.
sadly, it probably will
Possibly in bad taste, but that guy looks like a bad ass walking around on fire.
