http://www.gamespot.com/articles/two-years-after-development-ceased-tribes-ascend-b/1100-6430157/
Hi-Rez Studios plans to again support its free-to-play shooter, Tribes: Ascend, beginning with the release of a new map. This was announced by Hi-Rez CEO Erez Goren on Twitter this afternoon, where he explained that this is being made possible by the success of Hi-Rez's two most recent games
.
Will this be enough to bring people back? A lot of people I've seen were extremely upset with how HiRez treated Tribes
YES please start fixing things. Please. Starting with sentinel. [editline]28th August 2015[/editline]
Will this be enough to bring people back? A lot of people I've seen were extremely upset with how HiRez treated Tribes
Oh people will come back, as much as we griped about their shitty balancing and glacial workflow there is literally no other game like tribes ascend. Even Starsiege is a much different game so the people that left never really had an alternative. Keep in mind tons of players still play Tribes Ascend, so theres enough in place that returning players will have people to play with. Alot of the reason tribes died was because everybody kept proclaiming it dead even when people were still playing. I believe the same thing is happening to strike vector at the moment too, which is pretty sad. Also theres the currently shoddy balancing which I hope they address. RIP Global Agenda
Will this be enough to bring people back? A lot of people I've seen were extremely upset with how HiRez treated Tribes
I doubt it will bring a huge player base back, and I'm sure they're aware. They seem to want to rectify the relationship with particularly the veteran Tribes community. It's always going to be a niche game since there's a high skill cap.
used to play this, had unlocked all guns and shit, maybe i'll reinstall.
Dont toy with my emotions HiRez, you better follow through
If Tribes was to get big again, I would be so extremely happy. Watching it die was one of the most heartbreaking things in the world, and seeing the MOBA cash cow slam the final nail in the coffin just made it sting more. Sadly, I really doubt that would ever happen. IF they really wanted tribes to thrive again, they'd fix the mound of bugs that keep the game essentially broken, not throw fans a bone with a new map.
I bought like $30 worth of currency this, only to suddenly get burnt out over a few days for no reason. Although it was around the same time they got rid of static classes, so I wonder if I liked them more than I thought I did.
Will this be enough to bring people back? A lot of people I've seen were extremely upset with how HiRez treated Tribes
Not a lot initially, but once it's spammed on /v/ enough like the "good old days", expect numbers to start picking up rapidly. Also, HiRez will need to do a lot more than just add a map to keep people playing. I also don't see them supporting it long, since they're also working on Paladins, which in turn probably means they'll probably stop supporting SMITE as well.
YES please start fixing things. Please. Starting with sentinel.
*starting with removing smgs, shotguns, assault rifles and those shit-cunt turrets from the game. This, or a mode that removes/nerfs those items is the only thing that would get me to even consider playing Ascend again. They run entirely counter to the point of the game, in other words they may as well not be projectile weapons. A good spinfusor player can be out-gunned by someone mediocre with an smg.
Will re-install for sure.

I also think you're wrong about someone being mediocre with an smg.
I hope this leads to less people being salty about Smite existing, it's pretty great once you stop looking at it as a scapegoat for Tribes death.
I hope this leads to less people being salty about Smite existing, it's pretty great once you stop looking at it as a scapegoat for Tribes death.
It seemed that Tribes wasn't really a good return on investment, so it only makes sense they would choose to concentrate on Smite.
*starting with removing smgs, shotguns, assault rifles and those shit-cunt turrets from the game. A good spinfusor player can be out-gunned by someone mediocre with an smg.
They do, but funnily enough thanks to the awful balancing they actually can be dealt with. In fact Engineer turrets are the most impotent thing in the game. What currently is broken though is the sentinel. Because of how the maps are currently constructed, the sentinel as it exists is broken, but if you remove its hitscan rifle, the sentinel as a class itself no longer has a point to exist and the game also becomes unbalanced as theres literally no way to stop a 300 speed grab without countergrabbing, and it becomes even more difficult to countergrab without a sentinel. It also becomes nigh impossible to grab without hitting the pathfinder speed cap as lack of engaging forces adds more doombringers/brutes/soldiers and the problem gets worse. Either the exact mechanics of the sentinel's rifles needs to be changed or katabatic +couple of other maps need to be tweaked. While I can agree with the removal of the Brute's autoshotgun and the eagle/sparrow/falcon, the other rifles need to be in the game due to the mechanic changes between tribes ascend and starsiege. Seriously, the balance flys out the window once again purely because of this. The Juggernaut, Raider, and Soldier need their rifles, because otherwise they can't do a thing against regen health and it helps prevent the game turn into a cap race, much like it does when you remove the sentinel's rifle. Seriously, we tried HARD to remove the rifles and as it stands now we basically can't unless Doombringer is made a med class or has a class split like beta pathfinder/jumper, which is essentially the soldier with optional spinfusor. Yes its super annoying to see your team fall apart to bullet weapons in pubs, but thats just due to people learning. Unless you are the flag carrier, facing a doombringer, or walking, it is nearly impossible to be killed by even an excellent rifle user. Hell those weapons help newbs get out of the habit of walking everywhere. Now the brute's shotgun on the other hand =/
I don't trust them in the slightest. They've fucked up so hard so many times, not just with T:A but with GA and their whole management, there's not a chance in hell I'll even consider reinstalling until they can really prove that they've actually changed. For something close to what, 2-3 years, the competitive community begged them to stop being so horrendously shit with community management, to fix blatant server issues, to just acknowledge bugs, optimization, balancing, etc.etc.etc.etc. and every time their response was to either outright ignore the feedback, or to make empty promises and hope that we forgot about them. I only played competitively for like... 4-6 months, and only like 800 or so hours of gameplay, but that was more than enough to realize what a disastrous company Hi-Rez is and how far gone T:A was from being saved. The only fond memories I have of that are meeting some awesome people and enjoying the game when it seemed to have some promise. e: For perspective on how poorly the game was balanced for competitive play: competitive rulesets restricted probably close to 40-60% of the game's content to try and keep things balanced.
Time and time I hear this argument. Making Tribes a heavy projectile only game makes it a boring groundpound fest.
Elaborate. Do you mean that the people walking around on the ground would get shot up? Or that you'd wait for people to hit the ground before firing at them? The first is just poor understanding of the game, the second can be mitigated by... playing the game better. You've got jetpacks, why wouldn't be being on the ground a disadvantage? As of the last time I played it, as long as you have baseline familiarity with the concept of leading a moving target, you can rack up kill after kill with the ballistic weapons, whereas hitting a moving, flying target directly with a spinfusor or similar is, you know, actually challenging and insanely rewarding. But then I just want a full-on re-make of Tribes 2 so whaddo i know

You've got jetpacks, why wouldn't be being on the ground a disadvantage
The main issue is that becomes a slugfest to chase and intercept cappers, and encourages a whole load of groundpounding the flag stand to prevent a grab. It's just going to result in really long rabbit-style standoffs that take several minutes or more to retrieve one sides flag and stagnates the game. https://www.reddit.com/r/Tribes/comments/37gj9g/can_someone_start_a_projectileonly_pug_why_not/ Somebody wanted an honor only PUG and was met with similar response to what I've stated above. I won't disagree it's rewarding to get a good shot, but restricting the game to that just slows down the game. I can also agree to snipers having a bit too much of an influence on the games currently.
Will this be enough to bring people back? A lot of people I've seen were extremely upset with how HiRez treated Tribes
I was really sad when it went down, and I miss sick skiing, so yes I'll be going back. VGS
But then I just want a full-on re-make of Tribes 2 so whaddo i know
Well thats the problem the way ascend is balanced is exactly not that. In random servers the rifle might reign supreme but in focused matches its needed to balance flag capping.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83nSRUQUWx0 Yeah I don't care that they left tribes, I do care that this is how they treated it while they had it.
I want to be excited, but I'm not. As much as I loved the Tribes series, a new map and some bug fixes won't be enough to bring back a playerbase that resents the developers.
I'm not sure if i'm ready to love again
yea i'm not reinstalling tribes lmao. they're only releasing this patch that was promised 2 years ago so they can promote their new game paladins by trying to rope in players again with a bait before blasting them with paladins materials. it's what happened when smite first came out, they gave every tribes player codes and keys. and global agenda players tribes codes and keys etc.
tribes has been one of the only videogames i have actually gotten really competitive in. pulling off sick direct hits with my spinfusor while skating around at hundreds of kilometers per hour really got the blood pumping. i hope hi rez is serious about this and actually fix the balancing issues
Maybe now they can make it good.

Around the time I was really really good at shrike piloting, they decided to not allow vehicles in most of the tournaments I was in. Shrikes weren't even terribly overpowered, people were just really bad at combating them. I would routinely get 30+ kills, multiple flag captures, and at most have one Brute trying to shoot me down. People didn't realize how much damage small arms could do to the shrikes, so they didn't bother trying.
Time and time I hear this argument. Making Tribes a heavy projectile only game makes it a boring groundpound fest. I also think you're wrong about someone being mediocre with an smg.
Tribes 2 was exclusively projectiles bar the ridiculously difficult to use Laser Rifle (sniper) yet it was even faster than T:A with the very popular 'Classic' server mod.
I'll go back when they fix it. Also a new map? Ahahaha, go fuck yourselves.
