I decided to make this thread as a resource for people looking for some good comedians to watch/listen to, and who to avoid. My list will be extremely incomplete; please suggest comedians I forgot to add to the OP. :siren: IF YOU THINK IT'S LIKELY I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THE COMEDIAN BEFORE, INCLUDE A DESCRIPTION OF THEM FOR ME TO ADD TO THE OP. :siren: If enough people think a particular comedian should be moved to a different section, I will move them. Fantastic Comedians: Kyle Cease My personal all-time favorite comedian. He's huge on the college comedy circuit, and his jokes are fucking off-the-wall hilarious. I can't recommend him highly enough. Stand-Ups: *One Dimple (Audio) (2006) *Weirder, Blacker, Dimpler (Video) (2007) Mitch Hedberg It's a sad fucking thing that Mitch died of a drug overdose in 2005, because we can't be further blessed with his brilliant comedy. A total stoner, this guy has a great style of comedy that makes you laugh at the little things. Stand-Ups: *Strategic Grill Locations (Audio) (1999) *Mitch All Together (Audio) (2003) *Do You Believe in Gosh? (Audio) (Released in 2008, recorded in 2005) Nick Swardson Widely known for his creepy and often seemingly homosexual roles in films and television shows, Nick Swardson does some great stand-up. He's pretty vulgar and talks like he's completely baked. Oh, and he's not actually gay. Stand-Ups: *Party (Audio) (2007) *Seriously, Who Farted? (Video) (2009) Patton Oswalt Patton Oswalt is a brilliant comedian, he has jokes everyone can relate to, and he'll blow your mind with how far he can take some things. He's got a very unique style of stand-up. Stand-Ups: *Feelin' Kinda Patton (Audio) (2004) *No Reason to Complain (Video) (2004) *Werewolves and Lollipops (Audio) (2007) *My Weakness is Strong (Video) (2009) Aziz Ansari Relatively new to the stand-up comedy scene, Aziz just did his first special for Comedy Central, and it was fucking awesome. He has a couple of "alright" jokes here and there, but the overall effect of his stand-up style will have you showing his jokes to all your friends after you watch him. Excellent comedian. Stand-Ups: *Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening (Video) (2010) Demetri Martin Really funny comedian, his stand-up is sort of an endless barrage of hilarious little snippets that make you think differently about how things are in society. Stand-Ups: *These Are Jokes (Audio) (2006) *Demetri Martin. Person. (Video) (2007) Louis C.K. Louie is a middle-aged, pessimistic divorcee known for being incredibly mean spirited to the people he loves. His gags are known to involve how much of an asshole his kids are, how retarded his wife his, and some pretty vulgar stuff, like having to clean his daughter's poop covered vagina. The ultimate family man and the ultimate asshole. He also has a great voice, and just has a hilarious way with words. Stand-Ups: *Live in Houston (2003) *Shameless (2007) *Chewed Up (2008) *Hilarious (2010) Dave Chappelle Dave does his stand-up like he did his show: hard-hitting and hilarious jokes about race and popular culture. His outrageous attitude and great stage presence makes him one of the best comics there are. Stand-Ups: *Killin' Them Softly (Video) (2000) *For What It's Worth (Video) (2004) George Carlin George Carlin is a riotous old comedian with a bit of dark humor and delves into politics and society in his routine. He's almost universally loved, especially by Facepunchers. Stand-Ups: Way too fucking many, click here. Richard Pryor Talking a ton about race, sex, and drugs, Richard is one of the great classics. Another brilliant comedian, lost to drug overdose. Stand-Ups: A lot of stuff. Eddie Murphy Easily the most popular comic of his time, Eddie did a lot of really good stand-up. He's consistently ranked on the "Greatest Comedians of All Time" lists, and he deserves to be there. Stand-Ups: *Eddie Murphy (Audio) (1982) *Eddie Murphy: Comedian (Audio) (1983) *Delirious (Video) (1983) *Raw (Video) (1987) Craig Robinson He's currently hosting Last Comic Standing and he does quite a bit of stand-up himself, including being part of a musical comedy duo called "L. Witherspoon and Chucky." The thing I love about this guy is that he's one of those comedians that would still be funny as fuck without a scripted routine. Stand-Ups: *You can find some of his stuff on YouTube, but other than that, keep watching his movies, they're awesome. Ricky Gervais His style of stand-up is very sarcastic and smart, and is one of the best active English comics. He doesn't have to be extremely obnoxious in order to make you laugh your ass off. Stand-Ups: *Animals (Video) (2003) *Politics (Video) (2004) *Fame (Video) (2007) *Science (Video) (2010) :siren: Too many images in the OP, I am moving the "Good," "Comedians," and "Comedians to Avoid" sections to my next couple of posts in this thread. :siren:
I have to heartily agree with all of your definitions of good through to horrible comedians. Excellent thread, thus far.
They call me Tater Salad...
Jeff Foxworthy kinda sucks, but I think Bill Engvall is hilarious. Also, Ron White is fucking awesome.
Louis CK should definitely be on the top list. Best comedian out there in my opinion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xL9xCWphV8s
Jeff Dunham sucks? Are you serious? I laughed my ass of at Achmed the dead terrorist!
Good Comedians: Ben Bailey You thought he only did Cash Cab and narrated Deadliest Catch, didn't you? Well, you thought wrong. He also does stand-up, and it's surprisingly good. Wikipedia says he was originally a bouncer at a comedy club when he was found to be funny enough that he was offered a job in stand-up, and I can see why. Stand-Ups: *No specials or comedy albums yet, but I was lucky enough to catch him on Comedy Central Presents, and I'm sure you can find his episode somewhere. Zach Galifianakis His jokes, like his characters in movies, are weird and often self-humiliating, but he does some really good stand-up. If you like him as an actor, you'll definitely like him as a comedian. Very funny. Stand-Ups: *Does live shows as part of the Funny or Die tour I believe, and has had one Comedy Central Presents. Stand-Ups: Rodney Dangerfield The father of modern stand-up, Rodney Dangerfield's style of comedy was dark humor, which was a lot rarer in his days. Still funny to listen to. Stand-Ups: *What's in a Name? (1966) *I Don't Get No Respect (1980) *No Respect (1981) *Rappin' Rodney (1983) *La Contessa (1995) *Romeo Rodney (2005) Will Ferrell Not exactly known for his stand-up, Will Ferrell has only really done one stand-up special, but it was good enough that I decided to add him to the list. He has a quote featured on the "Stand-up comedy" wiki page, calling stand-up "hard, lonely, and vicious," a true testament to one of the hardest stage professions besides Cirque du Soleil. Stand-Ups: *You're Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush (Video) (2009) Joe Rogan Largely known for being the host of Fear Factor and as a commentator for UFC, Joe Rogan also does some extremely vulgar and hilarious stand-up comedy in the same style that he does everything else. Very funny listening to his antics such as showing up to episodes of Fear Factor completely baked. Stand-Ups: *I'm Gonna Be Dead Someday (Audio) (2000) *Live from the Belly of the Beast (Video) (2001) *Joe Rogan: Live (Video) (2006) *Shiny Happy Jihad (Audio) (2007) *Talking Monkeys In Space (Video) (2010) Harland Williams Really funny, you need to watch his stuff if you like stand-up that is consistently funny while sprinkled with jokes that make you go "what the fuck?" Stand-Ups: *I was also lucky enough to catch him on Comedy Central Presents, he hasn't done any specials unfortunately, but he does a lot of live shows. Look for his CCP. Stephen Lynch This guy's constantly pushing the envelope with his jokes, a lot of which revolve around controversial topics such as abortion and mental retardation. If for some reason you're super politically correct, don't listen to him. However, if you aren't, this guy will make you laugh your ass off. Most of his jokes are within songs, and while I usually look down upon gimmick comedians, this guy is pretty good at it. Stand-Ups: *Superhero (Audio) (2003) *The Craig Machine (Audio) (2005) *Live at the El Rey (Video) (2004) **He's done a lot of Comedy Central Presents, and he also has a couple of studio albums, but I didn't post them because honestly it's not as funny to listen without a live audience to laugh with. Sinbad To be honest, I haven't watch his stand-up in like 8 years, but from what I remember he has some good stuff. Feel free to post a description that I can put here. Stand-Ups: *Brain Damaged (Video) (1990) *Afros and Bellbottoms (Video) (1993) *Son of a Preacher Man (Video) (1996) *Nothin' but the Funk (Video) (1998) Daniel Tosh I have to admit, while I hate his show on Comedy Central called Tosh.0, he's pretty good at comedy. He can be hilariously willing to offend anyone and he makes a point of it. Watch him. Stand-Ups: *True Stories I Made Up (Audio) (2005) *Completely Serious (Video) (2007) Jim Gaffigan Very weird, Jim Gaffigan does his stand-up in a way that seems socially awkward. He has a lot of really good jokes, stuff that's guaranteed to make anybody laugh, without being vulgar. Many of his jokes are focused on food. Stand-Ups: *Luigi's Doghouse (Audio) (2001) *Economics II (Audio) (2001) *More Moo Moos (Audio) (2003) *The Last Supper (Audio) (2004) *Doing My Time (Audio) (2004) *Beyond the Pale (Audio & Video) (2006) *King Baby (Audio & Video) (2009) John Pinette *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Show Me the Buffet (Audio) (1998) *I Say Nay Nay (Video) (2005) *I'm Starvin'! (Video) (2006) *Making Lite of Myself (Audio) (2007) Gabriel Iglesias *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *El Matador (2003) *The Surfer King (2006) *Hot and Fluffy (Video) (2007) *I'm not Fat... I'm Fluffy (Video) (2009) Brendon Burns *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Buckets and Sulphur *Misspent Childhood *Not for Everyone *Brendon vs Burnsy *All My Love All My Rage *Sober not Clean *The Thinking Mans Idiot Reginald D. Hunter *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *A Mystery Wrapped In A Nigga (2005) *Pride & Prejudice..... And Niggas (2006) *Fuck You In The Age Of Consequence (2007) *No Country For Grown Men (2008) *The Only Apple In The Garden Of Eden.... And Niggas (2009) *Trophy Nigga (2010) Paul Merton *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: Unable to find his stuff. Wikipedia makes him look like less of a comic and more like a funny show host. Can someone post his shows? Michael McIntyre *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Live and Laughing (Video) (2008) *Hello Wimbley (Video) (2009) Rob Brydon *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Rob Brydon: Live (Video) (2009) Eddie Izzard Really funny and really weird humor, Eddie will appeal to most audiences, but there are definitely people that won't like his style of stand-up. He does a lot of movies and I personally think he's hilarious. Stand-Ups: *Unrepeatable (Video) (1994) *Definite Article (Video) (1996) *Glorious (Video) (1997) *Dress to Kill (Video) (1998) *Circle (Video) (2000) *Sexie (Video) (2003) *Stripped (Video) (2008) George Lopez Despite doing a lot of kids' shows, George Lopez actually does some pretty good stand-up. He's able to consistently make you laugh, and he's not Carlos Mencia, so that's a plus. Stand-Ups: Alien Nation (2000) Right Now, Right Now (2001) Team Leader (2002) Why You Crying? (2006) El Mas Chingon? (2006) America's Mexican (2007) Tall, Dark, & Chicano (2009) Frankie Boyle *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Frankie Boyle Live (2008) *Frankie Boyle Live 2: If I Could Reach Out Through Your TV And Strangle You I Would (2010) Bill Hicks A highly respected and influential American comedian active in the 1980s and early 1990s whose brand of comedy and satire was viewed as highly rebellious, and was aimed not only to amuse but also attempted to "enlighten people to think for themselves" and challenge mainstream beliefs, particularly that of the media and the government. Much of his material was aimed at religion, consumerism and corporate America. Stand-Ups: Here's a page full of them Dave Allen *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *An older (and no longer living) comedian, I am unable to find any specials he's done. Dylan Moran *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Monster II Tour (Video) (2004) *Like, Totally (Video) (2005) Bill Bailey *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: A pretty good number of shows he's done. Russell Peters *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Outsourced (Video) (2006) *Red, White, and Brown (Video) (2008) Lee Mack *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Going Out (Video) (2010) Jimmy Carr *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Stand Up (2005) *Comedian (2007) *In Concert (2008) *Telling Jokes (2009) *Making People Laugh (2010) Sean Lock *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Sean Lock Live (Video) (2008) Mike Birbiglia Really funny comic who talks about a lot of different topics, and he's relatively clean. He makes some race jokes, usually making fun of himself and other white people, he's definitely worth listening to. Stand-Ups: *Dog Years (2004) *Two Drink Mike (2006) *What I Should Have Said Was Nothing (Video) 2008 Bill Connolly Really funny, really vulgar comedian. He's caught a bit of flak for some of the things he says, actually. He's been voted greatest comedian of all time a couple of times, even. Stand-Ups: Gigantic list of his stuff Dara Ó Briain *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Live at the Theatre Royal (Video) (2006) *Dara O'Briain Talks Funny: Live in London (Video) (2008) Ardal O'Hanlon *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Despite being a prominent Irish comedian, wikipedia has nothing to say about any recordings he's done. Ed Byrne *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *He does a lot of live shows, including the Just For Laughs festival and others. Tim Minchin *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: Too many to list here, babe Hugh Dennis *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *I don't know what it is about British comedians, but Wikipedia does not enjoy listing their works. Robin Williams Pretty funny, oldie American comic, I might have even put him in "Fantastic" if there weren't any allegations of stealing material from other comedians. Apparently he's coming out with a new special soon, should be worth watching. Stand-Ups: *An Evening with Robin Williams (Video) (1982) *Robin Williams: Live at the Met (Video) (1986) *Robin Williams: Live on Broadway (Video) (2002) *Robin Williams: Weapons of Self Destruction (Video) (2010) Lee Evans English Comedian noted for his manic style of stand up comedy, using his anxiety and talent for sound effects and physical comedy to help fuel his on-stage antics and elicit laughs from the audience. Stand-Ups: *Big (Video) (2008) Tommy Tiernan *Needs description* Stand-Ups: A list of his stuff Bo Burnham *Needs description* Stand-Ups: *He does a lot of live shows at colleges and different venues, and he has one CCP.
Louis CK should definitely be on the top list. Best comedian out there in my opinion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xL9xCWphV8s
That was funny, I'll definitely check him out. Can you post a description of him that I can add to his section of the OP? I'm gonna put him under "Good" unless a couple people also think he should be at the top.
Jeff Dunham sucks? Are you serious? I laughed my ass of at Achmed the dead terrorist!
I think you're one of those people that doesn't watch stand-up enough to know why I dislike Jeff Dunham. EDIT: I don't mean that offensively, but more as a suggestion that you should listen to some more comedians and see if you still feel the same way about him.
For anyone else who can get the show, Last Comic Standing is actually pretty fun to watch and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves comedy. Or at least past seasons of it. This season, the judges and editors seem to be trying too hard to be funnier than the comics themselves, which almost ruins the experience. Still worth watching for the acts, though.
Add Zach Galifianakis to Fantastic Comedians He's the funniest comedian out of all of these

I'm surprised Jeff Dunham sucks in your opinion. I'll be honest I've never seen any other stand-up comedy than him so I guess I should watch more to see why do you think that.
Jim Gaffigan is hilarious. I love all of his stuff.
Comedians: Chris Rock He's got a lot of pretty good stand-up, but it's nothing spectacular in my opinion. I like his movies more than his stand-up. Stand-Ups: *Born Suspect (Audio) (1991) *Roll with the New (Audio) (1998) *Bigger & Blacker (Video) (1999) *Never Scared (Video) (2005) Dane Cook His early stuff is the shit, and for anyone who stopped listening to his more recent stuff because of how crappy it was, I recommend you go back and watch his first Comedy Central Presents, because it's damn good. He's kind of fallen out of favor in my book, and you'll find that if you ask a lot of people who their favorite comedian is, it will be this guy just because they don't know anyone else. Granted, he still has a few good jokes, but if you're gonna watch his stuff, I suggest the older things. Stand-Ups: *Harmful If Swallowed (Audio) (2003) *Retaliation (Audio) (2005) *Vicious Circle (Video) (2006) *Rough Around the Edges: Live from Madison Square Garden (Audio) (2007) *Isolated Incident (Video) (2009) Ron White The only decent member of the Blue Collar Comedy tour, Ron White has a very chillaxed stage presence. He has a number of good jokes, and he's worth listening to, but don't expect the best stand-up you've ever heard. Stand-Ups: *Tater Salad aka. Busted in Des Moines (Audio) (1990) *Drunk in Public (Audio) (2003) *You Can't Fix Stupid (Audio) (2006) *Behavioral Problems (Audio) (2009) Jerry Seinfeld Who doesn't love Seinfeld, the funniest sitcom of the '90s? Well, if somehow you didn't know already from watching the show, Jerry Seinfeld also does stand-up comedy, and he's pretty funny. Stand-Ups: *I'm Telling You for the Last Time (Video) (1998) Bob Saget Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to listen to any of his stand-up yet, but I've been told that it's extremely profane, which just sounds funny because I've always pictured Bob Saget to be that nice, albeit weird guy from Full House. Stand-Ups: *That Ain't Right (Video) (2007) Bruce Bruce *Needs Description* Stand-Ups: *Has done an episode on CCP. Comedians to avoid: Carlos Mencia Generally disliked, Carlos plays the race card a little too much in his routine. He has good jokes every once in a long while, but the majority of his stand-up is obnoxious or stolen from George Lopez. Jeff Foxworthy Unfunny redneck who capitalizes on his redneck-ness by appealing to redneck audiences with redneck jokes. Host of Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?, the worst trivia gameshow on television. Stand-Ups: *You Might Be a Redneck If... (Audio) (1993) *Games Rednecks Play (Audio) (1995) *Totally Committed (Video) (1998) *Big Funny (2000) *Have Your Loved Ones Spayed or Neutered (2004) Bill Engvall Has an annoying, whiny, gay style of stand-up where he constantly makes fun of himself and the things that happen to him. He's part of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, and he's not Ron White, so he's another bad redneck comedian. Stand-Ups: *Here's Your Sign (Audio) (1996) *Dorkfish (Audio) (1998) *Here's Your Christmas Album (Audio) (1999) *Now That's Awesome (Audio) (2000) *Cheap Drunk: An Autobiography (Audio) (2002) *Here's Your Sign Reloaded (Audio) (2003) *A Decade of Laughs (Audio) (2004) *15° Off Cool (Video) (2007) *Aged and Confused (Video) (2009) Larry the Cable Guy One of, if not my very least favorite comedian ever. Another redneck. Incredibly annoying to listen to him talk, his movies are shit, and his jokes all seem to be about sex, which is interesting, because he doesn't seem like someone who would get any. Please, for the love of god, don't listen to him. Stand-Ups: *Lord, I Apologize (Audio) (2001) *A Very Larry Christmas (Audio) (2004) *The Right to Bare Arms (Audio) (2005) *Morning Constitutions (Audio) (2007) *Christmastime in Larryland (Audio) (2007) *On the Can (Audio) (2009) *Tailgate Party (Audio) (2009) Jeff Dunham A gimmick comedian, and a fucking terrible one at that. Appeals to the majority of ignorant people who have watched a total of three stand-ups in their entire lives, the other two being Dane Cook and a Blue Collar special, this guy is the epitome of terrible gimmick comedians. He's a fucking ventriloquist for god's sake. Stand-Ups: *Arguing with Myself (Video) (2006) *Spark of Insanity (Video) (2007) *Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special (Video) (2008) To the Zach Galifianakis and Patton Oswalt posts, thanks, I'll add them straight away.
I'm surprised Jeff Dunham sucks in your opinion. I'll be honest I've never seen any other stand-up comedy than him so I guess I should watch more to see why do you think that.
You should most definitely watch all of the comedians in the Fantastic section to see why there is so much stand-up that blows him out of the water.
You should add John Pinette. He's clean but really fucking funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUX263Z6Xek
I think Gabriel Iglesias is funny http://youtube.com/watch?v=c2owUI45FL0 http://youtube.com/watch?v=JOQJiZ_g3Ho
Also, not really worthy of OP status but Bruce Bruce is a pretty funny comedian. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pZUiAEw5eQ
If you don't mind offensive comedy, I recommend Brendan Burns. Hell, go look up one of his shows now on YouTube, look up Brendon Burns So I Suppose this is Offensive Now And watch the ones by xXxRANGAxXx, there is eight parts and I'm too much of a lazy ass to spend 30 minutes trying to get this iPhone to agree with me so I can link it.
What about Reginald D Hunter? I find him pretty funny.
Paul Merton, Michael McIntyre, Rob Brydon and Reg. D. Hunter are some of my favourites. Clean comedy. Paul Merton also does a lot of improv stuff. It's genius, all of it.
Dave Chappelle isn't there?
Dave Chappelle isn't there?
I ws just about to mention that. Where the fuck is Dave, OP?
George Carlin, for the love of god. There is too much to list, so just linking to wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Carlin A few outstanding performances of his are: *A Place for My Stuff *What Am I Doing In New Jersey? *Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics *Jammin' in New York *You Are All Diseased *Complaints and Grievances *Life Is Worth Losing
Yes George Carlin is outstanding, be sure to add him to the OP. But add Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphey as well.
No love for Eddie Izzard?
OP needs Dave Chapelle badly. The dude is blessed or cursed with certain traits and features that just make him ridiculously hilarious where other comedians would merely be obnoxious.
I was surprised not to see George Lopez. Maybe just because I'm Mexican...
Also Craig Robinson. He's only just starting to get noticed in the big time now, but that dude is fucking funny. You'll all probably know him from Hot tub time machine or Pineapple express.
Put Louis CK in the top list or I will have a brain aneurysm
I think Gabriel Iglesias is funny
He's one of my favorites.
I was just about to post him. I love him too. Definitely a good comedian if not fantastic. Also, Will Ferrel should be downed to Comedians and Dane Cook deserves Good Comedians.
