I don't quite know what to say about this movie, but there's something to be said. I just don't know what it is, it's definitely a must-see according to me though.
I was confused trying to keep up with all the time jumping (I was 11 at the time) But I must say I did enjoy this movie. Such a sad ending though :saddowns:

It's not so sad when you realize [sp] what you're watching is actually the movie Charlie's working on in the movie and the whole last act of the movie is actually Charlie's attempt at trying to make an exciting ending by getting his brother Donald to work on the script with him.[/sp]
Fucking love this film. I love trying to explain it to people because it just comes off as the most confusing film in the world.
A movie starring Nicolas Cage as the writer of the film about him and his twin brother who doesn't actually exist but has the film's writing accredited toward, also played by Nicolas Cage, writing the film you're watching as you're watching it while also adapting it from a book that doesn't actually exist that he wrote about in the film.
But the book does exist and it's about real people and events.

Really that just makes the movie more awesome.
It is a great movie about the writing process. This is probably Nick Cages's best roles. [sp]It was awesome how the movie ended up like how his twin brother would have written it.[/sp]

Well I do not remember any of that. I must have been really too young to understand it. I'll be sure to watch it again very soon!
yeah. this movie rules.
Getting it now.
Love Charlie Kaufman but get headaches from his work.

Totally agreed.
This movie in my personal top ten. It's the perfect illustration of art films vs. Hollywood film ideals. Charlie wants to adapt "The Orchid Thief" as it was written; completely plotless, meaning there'd be no character development, no conflict, no crisis, or characters succeeding in the end. Meanwhile, his brother Donald wants to write an archetypal thriller story, structuring it using the methods of screenwriting guru Robert McKee (who actually agreed to let Charlie use his likeness to represent the Hollywood side under the condition that he revised the ending [which Kaufman didn't have at the time] and gave him a moment of redemption). Although Charlie thinks that real life has no insight or conflict, his journey in writing the adaptation is full of conflict and insight, and this is before the third act. The entire third act is a wild mix of Hollywood cliches and Counter-Cinema Post-Modernism that must be seen to be believed.
Of all the scenes, the Story Seminar scene is my favorite. Gotta love the performance by Brian Cox (who McKee handpicked to play him). I first saw the clip out of context and thought it was amazing, but when I saw it in-context, it was breathtaking.

As a fan of McKee (who, unlike his portrayal in the film, also addresses antiplot and art film stuff in his book "Story"), I've spotted an easy-to-miss easter egg: at 0:55, McKee is drawing "The Gap", which is the moment in a story where one's actions (Kaufman not wanting to take McKee's course for fear of easy answers) lead to an opposite or greater effect than expected (McKee giving advice that Kaufman takes seriously).
