My music collection is getting dusty need some new stuff and I have way to much hiphop. I'm thinking any sort of rock really though if you have something else in mind I'd like to hear it. Not in to country, metal, jazz, or reggae though.
non-hip hop is retardedly broad.
The Protomen.
whats the difference between rock and metal
whats the difference between rock and metal
The Doors (Rock) Metallica (Metal.
Although, Metallica is like 80's-90's Metal and is due to "evolution of the master genre" is now like Dad-Metal.
Dream Theater. They are progressive metal, but if you're looking for good music you'll like them. I'd try not to base so much off of the genre. Although I don't care for them, many people like Muse. Many people are into Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as Radiohead. By modern I assume bands that are still making music, and those are the main ones.
Pink Floyd and King Crimson.

It is hard to tell in some cases especially considering that the genres have so many sub genres. Generally metal is riff oriented heavier, and the vocals are harsher. Like I said, the genre is too big to make such kind of generalizations. Black Sabbath, the band that started metal, is now kind of considered to sound like hard rock. A lot of times it is easy to tell, but sometimes it can be difficult because we're classifying something with abstract guidelines.
