• Any advice for a future sailor?

I am leaving for Navy basic training in nine days, October 9th. I am going into the Submarine Eletronics field. My contract is for five years. I am hoping to get a degree while in the Navy, but I don't plan on reenlisting. I am not really worried about bootcamp. What I am mainly worried about is that I won't be able to get a degree, and that I will be stationed some place crummy. I was wondering if there are any facepunchers who could offer me some advice on my upcoming career in the military. None of the recruiters I talk to can really answer my questions because none of them were aboard a submarine. Some questions I have are: - What is A and C school like? - What is the diffrence between ET FT & ST (if I even get to choose) - What is the schedule on a submarine like? Is it 24/7 work, or is there time where no one is working? - Will I even have time to pursue a degree under my career field? - Also what bases should I choose if I get a choice? And What is Groton, CT like? Thanks.
Subs? Lol! Good luck.. -what rate did you pick at meps? -unless your on shore duty forget about college, on surface ships we have SHF internet, slow but you.can do online college underway. I've been on a LA class and I don't think they get that.
Learn to swear beforehand.
Submarine Electronics, I will be given a a more exact one after basic training.
When you signed your contract, it has your exact job. Don't tell me you signed your life away for 5 years and didn't even read the contract!?! LOL
All i can say is don't be a dumb fuck. I deal with idiots who make poor choices and violate rules and laws on a regular basis. Most of them have just got in and have the "The military owes me all this" mentality. I literally listened to some dude who just got in to A School and was saying how bad the navy treats him. Guy isn't even at his first real duty station. All i can say is be a hard worker, take what they dish out to you. Trust me, people will see and recognized that your a person that gets it done no matter how you're treated. Don't do anything you're not suppose to do. Couple of things i can only suggest 1. Avoid hotel parties at all costs, there is more then likely drugs and other illegal activity that if you're even in the same room you'll get in trouble too. Trust me CID knows about these parties and often utilizes hidden cameras and microphones to get evidence. 2. Don't steal shit or shoplift (or don't be with someone that does it), it costs a shit ton of money and depending on what happens you can get a article 15 (Mast) or other serious shit. 3. Use commonsense (a lot of servicemen don't have it) and if you even have to ask or think about it then don't do it. 4. Enjoy it, you make the time you serve good or bad. Make the best of every situation and keep a positive attitude. Enjoy your duty stations if you can and explore these places. You're getting a unique opportunity, take advantage of it. 5. Save, SAve and save more money. You're literally given almost everything you need. Spend your money on things you only need. As soon as you get out of boot camp don't be a retard and go out and buy a new phone with contract, tv and a bunch of other stupid shit. Most thing people do when they get out is spend it all then they got no savings. Use this time to save up and build yourself a nice "nest". Obviously you can buy nice things, but don't get overboard. Plus you want to pack/travel light. A lot of places will only let you take what you can fit in to your seabag. 6. Apply yourself get a degree, take any training you can get. Participate and volunteer for events and other things. Study for your tests, study for promotions, familiarize yourself with SOP's, etc. 7. Surround yourself with like minded people, a lot of people don't care and see the military as just another job vs it actually being a career. You want to be and work with people who want to succeed. Assuming you already passed MEPS continue to use the free time you have now to run and do push-ups. The better you are at it before going to basic, the better off you'll be. You're gonna do a lot of it.

What it says it that I will be working in the Submarine Electronics field. There are no gaurentees what job I will get out of the three: Fire, Sonar, Electrical. They are very similiar though. Eat spinach Punch a pirate to death
Don't get drunk. I've heard all sorts of things happen to drunk sailors.
Don't go too far sailing. You might fall off the edge.
Make sure to use plenty of lube
Jesus a fucking sub? If being a sailor wasn't enough bad enough already. My buddy was on a sub and he gave me one tip; make sure to clean the lint tray in the dry cleaner before use. It caught on fire, not one, not two, but THREE times. He said they also had a single xbox 360 where they took turns playing single player games. Honestly, that sounds like a shit job. I hope you find what you're looking.

I like enviroments where I can know everyone, because I come from a small town myself.
Read terminal lance... And watch out for the green weenie...
Don't get drunk. I've heard all sorts of things happen to drunk sailors.
Just avoid rusty razors in general, let's say.

Be prepared to be surrounded by a lot of seamen.
I consdered joining the navy at one point, then i remembered im terrified of drowning.
My dad was on a sub as a mechanic and he got stuck behind some piping which caused the whole freaking sub to go on alert. They found him almost an hour later, and the captain was the one who found him. He also has a story about hitting other US Navy boats with pineapples in Hawaii.

I had an uncle who was in the Navy. He told me a story about the first time he passed the equator (either that or the date line). Let's just say it was an interesting ritual.
