An online campaign has helped Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead chart at number 10 in the Official Midweek Charts.
Opponents of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher have been buying copies of the song following her death on Monday aged 87.
When asked if the station would play the track, a spokesperson told Newsbeat: "Radio 1 will run through the Official Chart Update today as normal, however we only play a selection of entries each week.
"The Official Chart Show on Sunday is a historical and factual account of what the British public has been buying and we will make a decision about playing it when the final chart positions are clear."
It would be even more awkward if they didn't play it.

For old times sake, tap your feet and hum it with me folks!!!
Good. I hope it gets to number 1.
I still find it quite disgusting that people are mocking her to such an extent, after everything bad she may or may not have done, she's still a person. I can't imagine how much grief her children and relatives are going through, especially with this ridiculous public ridiculing that is going on.

Hitler had relatives too, you know.
for god's sake she was a person who died. i dont care what you thought of her politics, this is the loss of a life and im sure her family and loved ones are greatly affected by this.

The fact that she has children isn't the reason you shouldn't be mocking her. They're scumbags.
Its sad but i still find this funny.

Her son tried to make a coup in Equatorial Guinea. They're an entire clan of wankers.

I've never understood "don't badmouth the dead". Especially when they did things that are bad or seen as bad

Godwin's Law, I know, but no one seems to mind people badmouthing Hitler.
She hasn't been in power for over 20 years. What's the point of celebrating?

I don't remember much about the Wizard of Oz plot, but how come only a small group who got attacked by flying monkeys went to the wizard when there's a small army marching in the street in that scene?
Anyone that listened to that after she died is a sick fuck.

exactly
I bet 3/4s of the people buying this song weren't even alive when she was prime minister

well here it's more the case that it's just pointless and a tad crass; I wouldn't mind a scathing analysis of her political failures or something but this is just mindless viral bullshit

i don't mock her and never wished death upon her (although i did write a song about rounding up her, churchill, reagan, gorbachev, hitler and castro in an old folks home and then shooting them all but that's long behind me now) but god, fuck her legacy and fuck her politics. i have no hatred for her, but i have distaste for her actions.

i'm not one of the fuckholes celebrating though so i guess i don't count

why would a government use its defense force just so some little girl can visit a wizard?
that's like if some girl was lost in your hometown and they called the national guard to get her home safely.
That song was literally the first thing I thought of when I learned that the bastard had died.
The beeb could simply say we aren't playing this since it has political ties and could compromise how they want to stay neutral.

Especially Thatcher. I Mean, if you can pinpoint massive failures in history to one or two people. Then you fucking should, it'd just be ignorant to be all, "Oh she died, better pretend she wasn't a massive pile of shit".

I hope you do the same for the leaders of our government in the 70's then.
Hitler had relatives too, you know.
Godwin by the 6th post, GG Facepunch.
Hitler had relatives too, you know.
Yeah and Hitler also walked on two feet.
Your point being?

They are the munchkin citizens, they show her the way to Oz the wizard who then tells her to kill the witch of the EAST, the dead one is the one of the west. She had found a scarecrow, a tinman and a lion by that point who help her burn the witch with water.

No one is pretending anything, it's undeniable that she had failures, all Prime Ministers do - the real ignorance comes from the people who say things like 'she was a massive pile of shit'

Not playing it could be seen as siding with her.

No, it's just common decency and not endorsing something fucking crass. This isn't playing rage against the machine thanks to the campaign that got it to beat x factor to #1, that was in good spirit and wasn't celebrating the death of a person

Well it's a very contentious issue - there's arguments for and aainst what she did. Criticizing her political legacy (which I heartily endorse, now more than ever) is not the same as celebrating her death, that's barbaric and is something the americans would do (and did, in the case of bin laden).

Something the Americans would do? Fuck you, thank you for painting us all the same, it really makes you the better man for not celebrating her death.

Yes there were parties, you guys definitely celebrated too with the small riots and parties.

And the difference with Bin Laden is he was still a potential threat to thousands of people's lives up until he died (I mean at least perceived to be)
Thatcher was just some old crone who couldn't do anything really
