The X games - X Gold, X2: The Thread, X3: Reunion & X3: Terran War Pack - are a series of some of the most ambitious and sophisticated space-roaming simulators ever created. This is no exaggeration. The universe is a vast, ruthless place, a true final frontier, where the strong and cunning prosper while the weak are eaten up alive without mercy. But do you have the guile and determination to make it? The X Series are true sandboxes - you are in charge of your destiny from the second you leave the hangar for the first time, until the moment you deem yourself satisfied with your galactic conquest. Even though the complexity may be overwhelming to newcomers, the rewards are incredible: in the X Series you can do whatever you want. Become a roaming mercenary - go from nimble fighters to huling destroyers, join one of the many factions in war, build and maintain a massive trading empire from rags to riches, even own your own trading posts and facilities. The possibilities are incredible. In this case it was a moonshine with 4 Xs on it. MOst people speculated it was for Fallout, until one freshman responded it's for X- series. Next bundle has been added and Bam! I've wanted to get into this series but it's so unbelievably over my head it's not even funny.
I've wanted to get into this series but it's so unbelievably over my head it's not even funny.
There isn't really that much to it, you just trade a bit and next thing you know you spend 30 hours configuring your 200 ship fleet.
I've wanted to get into this series but it's so unbelievably over my head it's not even funny.
Same, I've tried both X2 and X3 multiple times, but there's so much shit to learn it's not even funny. This is coming from someone who enjoys relatively complex games too.
The game itself is not that hard to learn, what's really off-putting to beginners is the badly-designed UI. Also, do not hesitate to mod it to hell and back, a lot of scripts are really helpful.

I recommend Terran Conflict + Albion Prelude, and then to mod the shit out of the game with a few things, or maybe just use the X Rebalanced mod on its own. It's one hell of a hidden gem of a game. You can go to Ore Belt, sell energy cells from the solar power plant there to the Ore mines in the same sector, then use those credits to buy the ore and sell it to various stations in sectors North of Ore Belt. Ore Belt sits south of Home of Light, which is south of Argon Prime, which is south of Herron's Nebula. That should get you started. Unless you do the story then that'll get you started

X3TC and by extension X3AP have an interface similar to Windows, where stuff is organized into 'folders' on the left side of the screen. One can enable the mouse and use that to navigate the interface, or just use the old key combos. First getting into the game, it's actually very easy compared to most space games. There's very few controls need to fly your ship and engage in battle: throttle, strafing, fire weapons/missiles, switch targets, and engage SETA time dilation are really all you need for battles. Trading is a bit more complicated, but the rules are still pretty simple: buy where supplies are high at a station, sell where they are scarce.
A year ago I went far enough in the game to have my own self-sufficient hub in the Earth sector which outputted a continuous flow of M1 carriers filled with fully-equipped Xperimental shuttles, along with M2 and M7 escorts. I was preparing to pacify Xenon sectors and make them economically viable, but then I reformatted my computer and forgot to backup my saves. I'd love to go back to it but I can't be arsed to go through it all again.
You'll be overflowing with cash once you set up a Mk.3 trade fleet and get good rep with enough races. Its all the micromanaging through all the menus that makes it tedious and difficult.
X3: Terran Conflict went sweet until I got to the Hub plot and realised I just didn't have the output to meet the requirements. Had to build a ridiculously huge complex in a sector and then never revisit it because it would kill my computer. Can be a pretty addicting game if you get over the early UI hurdles. Then you realise it's been 2 days and you haven't slept.
Every time I try to play X-series I just end up flying to different sectors and docking at trade stations where my ship computer tells me that none of the goods they have listed for sale are for sale Then I fly my ship into something out of boredom and quit the game
So uh.. What happened with X: Rebirth? I remember being hyped for it when they announced you could exit your ship and walk around on space stations.
So uh.. What happened with X: Rebirth? I remember being hyped for it when they announced you could exit your ship and walk around on space stations.
It was released far earlier than it should have, probably due to publisher deadlines (there was supposedly a massive rush on the DevNet testing forums to get as many bugs fixed before a set date). Considering the publisher is Deep Silver which has become infamous for releasing broken games, it's not too unlikely. Egosoft spent the next year fixing all the gamebreaking bugs, then began to add missing features like radar and third person, along with a fuckload of smaller changes in the massive 2.0 and 2.5 updates. Update 3.0 was released at the same time as the expansion pack, The Teladi Outpost, which was free for owners of the base game to pre-order until it came out in December 2014. Added in a new solar system, a few new weapons, a new ship set. Reception for the expansion pack was pretty positive. It'll never live up to X3 as the gameplay is too different, but now X: Rebirth is a solid game, maybe a 7 out of 10. It's no X3 sequel, though. More like a more expansive Darkstar One. In comparison, at release it was maybe a 4/10 due to the huge amounts of bugs, terrible performance, missing features, and so on. Egosoft have said in the X:R version 3.5 update video that they are in the preliminary phase of development for a game that is to be a more direct gameplay sequel to X3 based on the X: Rebirth engine, which will restore the ability to fly multiple ships and such that was missing in X:R.

Not even mods could save it. Other than that, X-Series is one of my all time fav game series.
So uh.. What happened with X: Rebirth?
Should have been X: Abortion IMO.
Saw this a while back. It's a pretty good crash course on Rebirth's many flaws:
