And yeah, it's pretty cool.
Not 3d, not perspective. Orthographic. All the perspective lines are in the exact same angle. It's basically a huge isometric piece. If one attempts any real depth with a technique like that, more distant parts of objects will have distorted proportions because in orthographic projection every point is the same distance away from the viewer.

Adding another axis into the projection is logical, it's just our 3 dimensional brains that can't really imagine what "direction" the "w-axis" would be. X goes left and right, Y goes up and down, Z goes forward and backward, and W goes... Charm and Strange? :D
Drawing a projection of a tesseract using a grid and the lengths 0 and 1 is just as easy as drawing a projection of a cube the same way. But instead of going right, up and forward to get from one vertex of the cube to the opposite, in order to get from one vertex of the hypercube to the opposite, one must go right, up, forward and W-forward.
