• How to name an instrumental?
    25 replies, posted
I'm an amateur music maker, I make a lot of electronic tracks generally. Usually I have no problem naming my songs, I usually name it based off a feeling or a sound that the song gives (because I can't base it off of lyrics since there are none obviously). But for some reason I can't name this one song I've been working on. If you'd like I could post it but I'd rather just have some advice on how any of you guys go about naming instrumentals. Also, I wasn't sure if this belonged here or in the music thread, but this seemed to be more for amateur artists rather than people talking about professionals... If not sorry.
Why couldn't you name it using the same style you name electronic songs? A lot of the time, instrumentals just have an "epic" (in the literal sense of the term) name. Such as Megadeth's Absolution. There is nothing but the sound of the word that lends itself to the song, in my opinion anyway. But yes, might be a good idea to post it to get some suggestions that may help you decide on one.
I just put together two random words that shouldn't go together [editline]16th May 2011[/editline] like Passionate Inaction [editline]16th May 2011[/editline] or Accidental Purpose

Simple things like that. But for some reason I can't get it. I'll post it if I get a chance.
Since most of my songs have lyrics, I usually pick the phrase that I think sums up the song. Sometimes I come up with the title and base the whole song around the title. Awkward Dinosaur is a very good example of that. But that approach doesn't work well for instrumentals. Instead of making a song and trying to figure out a title that would describe it, how about coming up with with what the song is about, then making the song, and then coming up with the title. It is more difficult to place meaning to something that you did not intend to have meaning. I must admit that sometimes I make music and have no idea what it is about. In these cases I close my eyes, listen to the music and try to visualize the music, and usually something pops into my head. I take that and then just make a title that tries to be clever. I never see it as being clever, but more in making fun of clever song titles. That's how I approach my serious songs as well, not trying to be serious, but making fun of serious songs. Lastly, realize that the title doesn't mean much. I'll give you an example of some dumb titles I've come up with. Very great, I'm not going to steal them don't worry. I actually figured out a title so I guess my problem has been solved. I ended up with "Electrophile" which I thought was a cool name.
"I guess my problem has been solved."
Always lots of nouns and verbs. "Fall of the Hammer" "Frankenstein" "Transylvania" etc

You could do it like the masters and just give them numbers.
yeah like fenwick said when you start making 100s naming them will become annoying
i'm always very descriptive when it comes to titles
Me too. My favorites are "aaaaaaaaaaaaa" and "Document 3".
I want to hear grandmapussyacid
amazingly it's just an ordinary acid techno track pretty much the only interesting thing about it is the title
I just scrolled through some of my 50 odd midi files that I have, most are names like "Lum de daaaa" "Finally figured out that damn thing" "track sucks" "drop D ell yeah bros lol" "hhhhhhhhhngh" "slow and boring" Etc etc. EI, I don't put too much thought into it.
While we are on the subject of projectfile names then: "GANGZTA" "dssad" "hoyl shit" "fuck kebab" "UGGA BUKKA" "remember to save often!" "colourful jumping penis" Why can't I just name them like numbers or dates? Maybe they'd lost personality or something, numbers are boring
Why can't I just name them like numbers or dates? Maybe they'd lost personality or something, numbers are boring
I remember my strange ramblings much better than dates or numbers.
Some of my project files are: "idea" "anotheridea" "idk" "idkkkk" "yeah" "inprogress" "lol" I'm really not helping myself when I look at past projects and can't figure out what they are.
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

Name your next instrumental "Untitled"
Name your next instrumental "Untitled"
Didn't Interpol do that?
Name your next instrumental "Untitled"
that's actually what it currently is, but I plan on changing it. I think i'm saving that one for a rainy day.
I usually like to make some play on words when I think of names, even if it has nothing to do with the song itself if it fits the idea
