Saudi Arabia says it will not issue any new visas for Swedish business people in retaliation for comments made by Foreign Minister Margot Wallström.
Per Jönsson, a middle east expert at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, described the move as a "major escalation".
"We hope that visa operations will resume," said Erik Boman, a spokesperson for Sweden's Foreign Ministry.
"We are working as quickly as possible to resolve this bilateral issue between Sweden and Saudi Arabia and would like to have continued good relations," he told the TT news wire on Thursday.
Saudi Arabia's move followed growing concerns from within Sweden's business community that Sweden’s increasingly strained relationship with the oil rich nation would affect business in the Arab world.
On Wednesday the government announced that 50 companies have been invited to discuss the issue with ministers.
Sweden decided to limit military ties with Saudi Arabia earlier this month, days after accusing the country of blocking Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström from speaking at an Arab League meeting.
Her cancelled remarks, published by the Swedish foreign ministry, did not mention Saudi Arabia but stressed women's and human rights.

Get over it Saudi Arabia
Oh no.
Margot Wallström is right. Saudi Arabia is a hole. I could go on for ages criticizing them.
The only reason it has gone on this long is their oil makes them butt-buddies with the rest of the world.
ikea furniture not made to saudi standards
Seriously what has Sweden ever done to anger anyone outside of IKEA giving you nearly enough parts.
How can Saudis live without Swedish meatballs?

Pretty well if they aren't halal

Canceling renewal of military commerce contracts and directly insulting another country?
Which is what this is all about.
Holy fucking shit
A country, actually giving two fucks about the human rights record of another country.
Yes! Now I feel like I'm in the XXI century.
Seriously? Her comments didn't even mention Saudi Arabia?

This is like the logical conclusion of 'La la la la, we can't hear you!'
Okay, so because we refused to do one business with them, they stop us from doing other business as well. How is that helping them, exactly?

'Cause why listen to a country with a more stable middle-class when you can wave a fist at them instead.
I wonder how else it must be to live in the 19th century again.

No you refused to CONTINUE to do business with them, so they refused to continue to do business with you.
It doesn't help them, but you guys are losing millions by not continuing to do business as you were before.
They expected to continue to do business with you and you said no, so they are kind of pissed.
Here's the reality: Saudi Arabia doesn't give a shit about Wallström having "insulted" them or anything. They're shit scared that more countries are going to follow suit and cancel their military contracts or make restrictions. So they're making really sure everyone understands that doing this will land you in a "diplomatic crisis".
The leadership in Saudi Arabia and everyone who is shouting about lost corporate profits can go fuck themselves for all I care, if we're ever going to see change in these countries someone has to speak the fuck up.

Just like refusing to sell weapons to someone who has not changed in the slightest, while being one of the largest arms exporters in the world?
Isn't it just as childish to suddenly say 2 months before a contract runs out and everyone involved expected a renewal as it was mutually beneficial to cancel it for something that was occurring when the contract was originally signed?
They are pissed due to the announcement of lack of renewal on extremely short notice.
Think about how pissed people would be if suddenly valve said that in 2 months they were shutting down steam, due to people constantly scamming others for money?
Or if Google were to stop providing image searching in 2 months, due to you can find child porn with it?

No it's not the same at all.
We decided the Saudis need to improve their human rights, we tell them to work on that, they get butthurt and remove their ambassador from Sweden, we discontinue support agreement, they deny visas now.
Sweden has done nothing wrong other than critisize the Saudis bad human rights and the Saudis flip their shit.
Instead of being children reacting so strongly, they could have cooperated and discussed their human rights issues they could improve. But no, they are arrogant awful people who are not diplomatic at all and there is no reason why we should renew a support contract when they refuse to act diplomatic with us.
Would it be stupid to believe that trade would improve their situation rather than giving them talks like these?

They are a repugnant, recalcitrant state that refuses to change their 17th century mindset. Until they start fixing their extensive list of human rights issues, they do not belong on the world stage.
what did she say?
That they treat women as shit
