Stop kicking it ;_;
Stop kicking it ;_;
This will be one of the main reasons why robots take over humanity in the future.
what's the use of it? Can we ride it? that'd be cool
what's the use of it? Can we ride it? that'd be cool
I suppose it's good for scouting, while the heavier models excel at carrying lots of shit.
what's the use of it? Can we ride it? that'd be cool
these things/the older predecessors have been the point of a lot of talk for military application (duh) primarily as pack mules, for delivery across dangerous territory, scouting dangerous areas and looking for survivors in collapsed buildings, etc
after watching some of the recent footage of things like the isis would-be-bomber vehicles getting blown up as they drive straight at a (military checkpoint into a city?), and the head-cam footage of US soldiers accidentally pinned down in a trench (by their own guys), could you imagine seeing them out on the battlefield, either on your side or against? Could you imagine a 5+ years advanced version of the wildcat model roaring over a hill in full gallop, skillfully dodging RPGs as it approaches?
Wonder what it's battery time is, like what 1 hour maximum? That isn't a lot of area covered at walking speed for reconnaissance

Fuck that. I want to ride a robot to work!

I'm not sure about this bugger (could be more useful as a police dog of sorts than out-on-campaign military stuff), but the wildcat model sounded to be running off an engine that sounded like a sporty minibike. Military application would probably benefit from running stuff off a tank of gasoline instead of worrying about battery charging, unless we get some good damn solar tech in the near future
As cool and innovative as these are, are they any more practical than a wheeled or tracked vehicle? They have a lot of intricate pieces, compared to relatively simple suspensions and axles+bearings. I'd imagine field repairs would be difficult.
rough terrain navigation, military applications would be pretty demanding
plus it's cool and also terrifying so hey who wouldn't want that

Thing with solar is that there will always be a physical limit of how much power you can get out of it.
Even with 100% efficiency, a small area like the top of one of these might not collect enough power to run its engines.
I genuinely felt bad when they kicked it. Goddamnit. I'm not supposed to feel these things for robots.
I imagine some robotkin on tumblr is really triggered by this
Can you ride it?
Can you ride it?
You can easily ride some of the variants, which can carry lots. BigDog can carry up to 150 kilos (340 pounds)

I was thinking the same thing until it walked up that hill and the stairs. I'd call that an advantage
That's extremely impressive
God damn that is cool
I can't wait till shit like this actually can be seen walking around a city delivering goods or helping people
They need to make a horse robot that can break in to a full gallop and support a person. Take the military back to the old days of cavalry, but with mechahorses.

Have they officially crossed the uncanny valley with this? I felt it too.
Look at its little antlers oh my god it's ADORABLE

Well, we've come full circle. Whats next? Robot elephants?

On open terrain, conventional wheels and such will remain the king.
However, wheels are notoriously poor in rough terrain; even purpose-built rock-climbing trucks have to approach rock fields at specific angles and jockey about in order to stay mobile, while something like this could just trot through at a relatively constant speed.
Gee, I remember watching videos of big dog a few years back.
This new one just seems so much more sophisticated, quiet-ish too.
They seem to have almost fixed the noise issue that Big Dog had:

And with it, Laser Lances.
Think about it.

"Oh fuck! The robot's out again! Let me try and kick it over."

well yeah. bigdog had a big ass engine in it to power the hydraulics and electrical. if they slapped a better muffler on it it'd be much quieter. The new one has a battery + electric pump.
