Mel Gibson's Judah Maccabee film sparks outrage from Jewish groups

[release] Mel Gibson is developing a film about Judah Maccabee, a hero of the Jewish faith who is celebrated on Hanukkah.
This is the same Mel Gibson who, after he was pulled over for driving under the influence, hurled anti-Semitic slurs at a police officer and accused Jews of being responsible for all the world’s wars.
Needless to say, people are upset.
The Anti-Defamation League released a statement asking Warner Bros., which is producing the film with the actor, to “reconsider Gibson’s involvement in this project.”
“As a hero of the Jewish people and a universal hero in the struggle for religious liberty, Judah Maccabee deserves better. It would be a travesty to have the story of the Maccabees told by one who has no respect and sensitivity for other people’s religious views,” the statement reads. “Not only has Mel Gibson shown outward antagonism toward Jews and Judaism in his public statements and actions, but his previous attempt to bring biblical history to life on the screen was marred by anti-Semitism.”
The American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants called Warner Bros.’s choice a “moral lapse of judgment and an expression of indifference to the struggle against hate and bigotry.”
“Holocaust survivors are aghast that a major Hollywood studio would join with Mel Gibson in this venture and view it as an affront to all victims of anti-Semitism, intolerance, and sexism,” a statement from the group said. “Given our brutal experience, we are pained that Warner Bros.has abandoned principle and taken this unworthy path.”
Maccabee led the Jewish revolt against the Greek-Syrian armies in the second century BC. Mel Gibson, 55, would be a logical choice to play Maccabee's father, the priest Mattathias, the LA Times said.[/release]

The funny thing is, the Maccabee army resembles the Palestinians today.
I will kill him.
I say go for it. It's not like the film will be a smear fest of judaism. He may be an anti-semite, but he's going to be on a leash.
If he backs down, or if he gets taken off the production, they have no balls.
I'd rather see Mel Brooks. At least then the offensiveness would be intentional and humorous and satirical.

Judaism is a religion whose followers are called Jews, being Jewish is belonging to an ethnicity and they're also called Jews, can we move the fuck on.

It would suck to be a Jew but not a Jew. I'd imagine it would be confusing.
Not like this whole thing matters anyways. Most celebrities have done something incredibly stupid in their lives, I'm sure this wasn't the worst. Some of them have even played national/religious icons without controversy.

Not really. That's a bit like saying 'white' is an ethnicity (except not because there are Jews who look like white Americans and Jews who look like Arabic Palestinians and so on).

so it's helpful to include it. As the quote says, some communities are extinct, but a Jewish ethnicity isn't strictly helpful, and arises out of obsolete understandings of race.

Not this again how can the Jews be a race when Judaism is a religion that makes no sense it's like saying that South West asians are all "Hindu"
