E3 2013: Killer Instinct Is a Fun Free to Play Xbox One Launch Game
Killer Instinct was always sort of dumb -- the goofy Mortal Kombat knock-off with a skeleton, a dinosaur, and dudes named TJ Combo (ugh) and Fulgore (what?). In hindsight, Killer Instinct was kind of embarrassing. But we still connected to it. Who doesn’t want to see a ninja fist-fight a werewolf?
Killer Instinct on Xbox One is still really, really stupid. It’s also pretty awesome.
More Street Fighter IV than traditional Killer Instinct in speed and style, this reboot isn’t just looking at how it can bring Rare’s classic back to life, but how it can reinvigorate it. The 2D fighter has changed significantly since 1994, and developer Double Helix recognizes it.

Killer Instinct is a day-one digital-only release on Xbox One, and features -- get this -- one character. Jago is free to play on launch day. Everyone else -- unspecified returning characters as well as original fighters -- will cost money. Price is to-be-determined (of course).

Wtf
i knew microsoft/rare would be too incompetent to make a competitive fighter
[editline]11th June 2013[/editline]
oh wow bad reading, double helix is making it. from the brilliant minds who brought us silent hill homecoming
What. The. Fuck.
Man, the only thing I really liked out of MS' conference and it's shit on before a day passes.
i always hoped an alternative option to free to play is that someone from microsoft can beat the shit out of you for all the content

It's not even made by Rare, or what little of Rare remains.
that game was just plan crap
if there was one game i could somehow time travel to eliminate it's existence, it would be silent hill homecoming
(old) Rare must be rolling in their statis tube.
What is the logic behind this
I mean...what
i can't wait to see this at EVO never

"WAAH WHY DOESN'T ANYONE RELEASE DEMOS ANYMORE"
and now this thread people are complaining that killer instinct comes as what is essentially a demo and you have to pay to have the full game
i wasn't aware tf2, dota2, league of legends, blacklight retribution, runescape, maplestory were all demos
As long as getting all/most of the characters isn't too expensive (Higher than what it would cost to buy a full game) I don't see too much of a problem. I doubt many people play every single character in a fighting game.
Although unless there's a way to earn characters or trying them out I can't see it working.
i wasn't aware tf2, dota2, league of legends, blacklight retribution, runescape, maplestory were all demos
both tf2 and blacklight retribution you can unlock every single item without spending a dime, and in both cases a lot of items are cosmetic changes to other items
haven't played the others and don't know how they work so can't really comment

I think the more legitimate complaint is that a classic game that many people loved as kids has finally been promised a return, but it's not developed by the original creators, it's exclusive to xboxone that already has tons of downsides, and with this information it seems it will be riddled with day1dlc which is a rarely appreciated feature.

Why call it a free to play game then? They could have made a league type Deal where the characters for free to play change weekly.
I can sort of see where they're coming from this: you only pay for characters you want to use. But there needs to be some way to try them out. Like only being able to play every character in campaign only, but to use them in any other mode (like versus or practice) requires purchasing them.
"We feel that having more than one character in a fighting game is terrible"
What?
The game is free and you buy the characters. It's not like there's actually one fighter or they're charging you full price and then on top of that charging you for characters.
Jesus tap dancing christ, you had one job Microsoft.

nobody else in this thread has said anything like that

because "free to play" sells better than "demo"
From all I keep hearing from Microsoft lately, my most recurring thought is what fucking looney bin did they hire to handle their marketing and major decisions.

A demo is a taste of a full game which you still have to buy. This is more free to play because the business model is selling you individual pieces of content.

Poor choice of words :v:

You ever played those old Demo discs that came with the Playstation 1/2?
There were Tekken demos on there and they were nowhere near as bare as this is
[editline]11th June 2013[/editline]
They certainly didn't give you one fucking character that's for sure
These are the end times for games.
These are the end times for microsoft.
FTFY
It's like they want us to hate them. From what I've seen from Sony, all they have to do is the opposite and they win the PR game big time.
Guys, how would the company make profit if they didn't charge you for each character? Fools.

The problem with free to play is that if you want to buy everything (the "full game"), it will usually cost you way more than the standard price of a game. Also since the only place you can buy the content from is the game's online store, the price never decreases.

Can you really deem something day1DLC if it's for a free-to-play game?
