Police executed 19 search warrants in nine Melbourne neighborhoods as part of the investigation into the group, which is suspected of having ties to Al-Shabaab, a Somali insurgent group with ties to al Qaeda, authorities said. The suspects planned to storm the Australian base with automatic weapons and carry out a "sustained attack on military personnel until they themselves were killed," said Tony Negus, deputy commissioner of the Australian Federal Police. Some 400 officers took part in the pre-dawn raids, foiling the alleged terror plot, police said. Investigators have been looking into the group for more than six months, officials said. If the alleged plot had been successful, it would have been "the most serious terrorist attack on Australian soil," Negus said. Watch what's known about the group » He said additional interviews and searches will be conducted as the investigation continues. He said while the suspects of the Melbourne-based group are Australian nationals, some are of Lebanese and Somalian descent. Somalia is engaged in a civil war between its unstable transitional government and Al-Shabaab, one of the strongest Islamic militias battling for control of Mogadishu. Al-Shabaab remains entrenched in northeast Somalia and in sections south of the capital. The fighting has uprooted more than 200,000 people since early May, according to the United Nations. The Somali militia, which is designated as terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department, has recruited young fighters from all around the world, including the United States.
Crikey. :smug:
Wow, I was just reading this on CNN, FP is fast.
Who would waste their time terrorizing Australia? I mean, the whole country's a desert.
They have terrorist in Australia?
Who would waste their time terrorizing Australia?
You just joined last month with your 6th alt and it has just under 1,000 posts? Go outside.
Here we examine the terrorist in his natural habitat. Now you have to be careful not to get too close to them, because they're very startled of westerners. Remember: they're more afraid of us than we are of them. Watch me poke them with a stick.
You just joined last month with your 6th alt and it has just under 1,000 posts? Go outside.
10th :eng101: I'm surprised that there are terrorists in Australia - I thought it was a pretty peaceful place.
So I assume that if we continue the war on terror, we're probably going to end up going to either Iran, Pakistan, or Somalia next. I'd put my money on Somalia.
I don't really get why. Australia doesn't seem like a target for terrorist acts.
Since when has Australia had problems with terrorism ever
I don't really get why. Australia doesn't seem like a target for terrorist acts.
Any population center in the Western world is pretty much a target. All terrorist actions are meant to cause massive morale loss, so as long as it hurts, it's viable as an option.
How is that terrorism? It's not a civilian target. It's just an attack.
How is that terrorism? It's not a civilian target. It's just an attack.
Terrorism doesn't necessarily involve civilian targets.
How is that terrorism? It's not a civilian target. It's just an attack.
These days everybody who isn't on your side is a terrorist. [editline]10:46PM[/editline]
Terrorism doesn't necessarily involve civilian targets.
"Terrorism" against legitimate targets is simple guerrilla warfare. Terrorist warfare is typically characterized by disregredation of conventional military targets. If you're trying to fight a war, attacking a military asset never has been and never will be a terrorist attack. If attacking military bases is terrorism, every country that has ever fought a war is a terrorist state.
I don't really get why. Australia doesn't seem like a target for terrorist acts.
But they have to protect the golf trophies!
Soon Australia will be the new terrorist hotspot..
Who would waste their time terrorizing Australia? I mean, the whole country's a desert.
And sheep
Since when has Australia had problems with terrorism ever
uh when a bomb blew up in bali killing 88 aussies.
I mean, the whole country's a desert.
Terrorists are most adaptable to hot desert climate.
uh when a bomb blew up in bali killing 88 aussies.
Swine flu is deadlier than that.
It's kind of dumb of them to tell us they're looking for the terrorists, the terrorists might find out and then they'd be harder to catch. This is why America is in charge of the War on Terror, people. This is why we sit at the head of the table.
I prefer to use the phrase "The War Against Terrorism"
Who would waste their time terrorizing Australia? I mean, the whole country's a desert.
:australia: Learn2Geoagraphy the whole place isnt a desert
I prefer to use the phrase "The War Against Terrorism"
But who's at the head of the table? NEWS FLASH: it's not you.
Your mom.
Swine flu is deadlier than that.
And regular flu is deadlier than swine flu. :v:
It's those goddamn emu's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Emu_War
Considering most of Australia's land is desert, you'd think the Somalians, etc. would have no interest there. Seriously, why Australia out of all the other nations in the area?
