Back then? They've always had them. Laugh tracks create a crowd-connection effect which makes the actual situation seem more funny.

Wait they're still in use?
I always took it as patronizing me. I know when to laugh at a joke, if it's not funny playing a stock laugh track isn't going to do anything

Modern sitcoms still use them all the time. And if you still laugh at the jokes on laugh-track sitcoms then it's obviously working.
Look up Big Bang Theory or Friends or Everybody Loves Raymond on youtube without laugh tracks. They're there for a purpose
