PALMER — Police say a 9-year-old elementary school student from Palmer will be summoned to juvenile court to face charges for bringing a toy handgun on the school bus. Chief Robert Frydryk says the school district has a "zero tolerance policy" regarding weapons. Even though the gun was a toy, it is considered a weapon because it shoots soft plastic projectiles. Frydryk says there is no indication the Old Mill Pond Elementary School student wanted to hurt anyone. The student’s name was not made public. The incident occurred May 5. The boy told police he forgot he had it in his jacket when he got on the bus. Superintendent Gerald Fournier tells The Republican of Springfield that the school took appropriate action "based on the policies and procedures we have in place."
http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/27880686/detail.html Summoning a 9 year old to court over a toy gun is just plain absurd. I don't know what kind of punishment will come of it, but he does not deserve it. I went to Palmer schools and this kind of thing has happened before. A student was almost expelled (he got it appealed) in 8th grade for bringing a clear, bright orange squirt gun on the bus. What do you think of his punishment and schools' response to scenarios such as this? Also sorry if this belongs in ITN, but I didn't think it was as much news as it was asking for opinions.
That's just dumb, punish him but don't send him to court
shoots soft plastic projectiles? so, he brought an airsoft gun onto a school bus. what is the problem here.
he needs the death penalty. he knew what he was doing
STICK EM UP HIGH
ha, reminds me of the story where a lil kid brought a real gun to school and injured other kids.
Saw this on the news this morning. Yet another absurdity of the "zero discretion" bullshit.
This 9 year old boy was obviously planning a school shooting. He knew exactly of what he was doing, and deserves the most severe of punishments.
shoots soft plastic projectiles? so, he brought an airsoft gun onto a school bus. what is the problem here.
Airsoft guns aren't exactly 'soft'. I think it was actually something like a nerf gun.
That's just dumb, punish him but don't send him to court
Uh, what? He shouldn't even be punished. I've seen loads of kids here with toy guns in public. Including on buses. Edit: Well. Saying that, it kind of depends on what kind of toy gun it was.
it shoots soft plastic projectiles
Seems a bit obscure to me. That could be anything, really.
Airsoft guns aren't exactly 'soft'. I think it was actually something like a nerf gun.
you mean those bright yellow plastic things that shoot 3 inch bright orange foam darts with suction cups on the end how does that equal a weapon

Al-Qaeda has finally gotten to our children now! WHERE WILL IT END
you mean those bright yellow plastic things that shoot 3 inch bright orange foam darts with suction cups on the end how does that equal a weapon
It could be an airsoft gun, but based on the wording, I'm not sure.

Reminds me of the time I accidentally left a pocket knife in my backpack and nearly pulled it out in the middle of class when reaching for a pencil. Kid really doesn't deserve any punishment.
you mean those bright yellow plastic things that shoot 3 inch bright orange foam darts with suction cups on the end how does that equal a weapon
Because soccer moms think that if anything has a trigger and fires something then it's a weapon.
Zero-tolerance policies make me laugh. A 9-year old boy with a nerf gun can get treated like a gun-toting maniac with a 9mm.
Zero-tolerance policies make me laugh. A 9-year old boy with a nerf gun can get charged like a gun-toting maniac with a 9mm.
we need a zero tolerance policy against zero tolerance policies
Whoever initiated this should be sent to court for being a massive faggot

It's a sad day when children even play with toys without being prosecuted
Every time I hear one of these absolutely ridiculous stories it dims my view of the US just a little bit more.
NERF guns are considered weapons? Sketches of rockets on note paper are bomb threats? They should just ban legs and arms. They can do a lot of damage if they're swung. Really, if they ban anything that could possibly hurt someone else everything in schools will be superglued to the floor and we should be locked into wheelchairs. Especially ridiculous since he's NINE.
My friend got suspended in 8th grade for poking someone with tin foil that his sandwich was wrapped in
Schools only over react because of lawyers. Seriously, they're so scarred by the fact that they'll become a liability so they make ridiculous and unfair rules just to appease "concerned" parents. You're living in a delusional fantasy world if you really think you can make childhood scratch and scrape free.

Once my younger brother brought an inert grenade on a school bus a long time ago, he showed it to everyone and I had a mini-heart attack.
shoots soft plastic projectiles? so, he brought an airsoft gun onto a school bus. what is the problem here.
Someone needs to learn the difference between Nerf and Airsoft.
