The UK introduced the images, which depict things such as diseased lungs and heart surgery, in 2008. But the Stirling University study found the images have had almost no effect on deterring 11 to 16-year-old smokers. However, they have had an effect on non-smokers and experimental smokers. The study - published by the Tobacco Control journal - looked at data from the Youth Tobacco Policy Survey before and after the introduction of the images. Before the introduction of the images only text warnings were used. In total, nearly 2,800 children were questioned. One in 10 was a smoker, while the others were either non-smokers or children who had just experimented with smoking.
Well no shit...if you're already addicted, a graphic isn't going to do much. They just assume "Meh, that'll never happen to me" and move on. It takes something serious to deter someone from their addiction. This is coming from a three-year chain smoker, by the way.
As a smoker, nope, never bothers me. Yeah I want to quit and all but once you're smoking frequently it's hard and the last thing you think about is a graphic image.
I've got a number of friends who have been smoking since freshman/sophomore year. They're all totally aware that they're destroying their lungs. It's not exactly hard knowledge to come by. Graphic covers won't make them change their mind - they know. They're just already addicted. They're aware that it's wasting them money, they're aware that they're killing themselves, but they do it anyways. Changing the covers to pus-filled tumor lungs won't change anybody's mind. If anything, it'll just make cigarette case profits shoot up for a bit.
I don't think smokers are oblivious to the fact they are harmful, I wouldn't find a graphic to be that deterring because I already know.

I don't want to seem inflammatory here because that is most certainly not my intention, but there's a lot of evidence that smoking is very bad for you and starting in the face of that evidence seems...odd to me. I've asked smokers I know and none of them seem interested in telling me.
It's like how Australia decided to plain package everything and put gorey as fuck images on the packets and all people do is draw on them or make stupid photos out of them like this [t]http://lolsnaps.com/upload_pic/HavingSomeFunWithTheNewCigarettePackagingInAustralia-74448.jpg[/t]
My mother said her and her friend were going to collect them like trading cards. Granted this was before they both switched to e-cigs. Now mom has chocolate flavored liquid stuff and she's happy as can be.
The idea behind the graphic images is to discourage new smokers from buying cigs or encourage current smokers on the fence to eventually drop the habit, not to make already established smokers "aware" or scared off cigs [editline]5th September 2013[/editline] Even then I wouldn't say its exactly effective. Everybody already knows the downsides to cigarettes.
Seen all that shit even before started smoking. Been smoking for "almost 3 years" and never gave a fuck since I can't see the shithole of a mess that my lungs probably are. I am still enjoying smoking but I am sure that this will be an issue in the future for me.
if you're young and smoke, you aren't very good at making decisions if you don't quit early, but, I don't see why it'd effect them that much. They're going about it all wrong. They're trying to attack the image and reputation of the smoking industry. As if graphic packs actually make it any worse than it is. Smoking them cigs while in secrecy since I didn't want anyone knowing about it but my buddies, first cigarettes made me dizzy too hehe. Me and my friends decided to get some cigars for fun and smoke em in a place where no one would come. It was like weed for us back in the day. Then I got my first rolling tobacco and then I started smoking infront of everyone, you see smoking for me wasn't about being cool but it was an activity for me and my buddies. There was just something about it back in the day. Your question made me feel nostalgic for the good old days in my hometown man. I was kinda stupid back then but the whole I am going with my friends to smoke and chat was great.

Pretty much talk to any smoker and they're fully fully aware of the effects of smoking cigarettes. Hell half the time when i bum out smokes to students walking to and from class on campus, they'll stop and chat and bring up the fact that i have some weird brand, then they bring up their first cigarette they smoked (and how bad it was). It's just a sort of constant awareness most smokers have that we're slowly killing ourselves, but we don't care. As Kurt Vonnegut said: smoking is a "classy way to commit suicide".
I find it annoying and insulting to smokers but clearly it has no affect. I don't even smoke. I buy a pack like once every 3 months at most for use at bar/club.
Didn't they start adding those on Australia not long ago? Because I remember everyone praising the idea and rating it winner and all and pretty much going "Hell yeah this is definitely gonna have an effect!" in a non sarcastic way Oh, the poor fools (we've had it in brazil for as long as I can remember, never did anything either)
They should find some organ donor smoker cadavers with ruined black lungs and open the fuckers up in front of highschoolers for biology class, that'd be a fun interactive experience.
Also in Canada on packs we will sometimes have packs with what might as well be holocaust victims on them, I always like taking a pen and turning them into a rapper or a stoner or something.
i use the graphics to make roaches for joints when im done the pack lol i find it funny as fuck when im high

I was also raised in a family of smokers, my dad has been a smoker his whole life and my whole life. There is a significant amount of evidence the exposure to that behaviour at a young age is influential. Personally, I have a weird relationship with smoking. I enjoy it, it's a great relaxer, but I do feel those health negatives after 6 plus years of smoking. I want to quit quite badly. I've tried a lot. It's a harder process than any other substance than i've had to quit due to it's commonality, it's everywhere and smokers are often very generous and will usually bum you a smoke when you're out. It's a lot of willpower to not ask a stranger smoking a cigg when you walk by them and you've gone 2 days or so and you just get that smell and feeling back. I understand your desire to understand this. I wish I understood more.
i use the graphics to make roaches for joints when im done the pack lol i find it funny as fuck when im high
oh man this is so funny. I always love how the rolling papers packs and even parts from the filters always end up being used as roach for joints.

"WARNING, THIS SHIT IS DANGEROUS" on the box or a picture of a guy with nasty lungs won't stop them.
They should make shock anti-smoking ads just like they did those safe driving ads in the UK. What you do is have two guys standing around smoking, and then a car runs them over.

first pack i got told me i would get addicted and die
What if chain smokers mixed nicotine with pot to get their fix? Now to legalize pot so I can make millions by marketing nicotine laced pot to cigarette smokers as a way to get their fix without the substance being quite as harmful.

There's not a lot to do in my hometown of southwest arkansas, so a lot of kids turn to that(or worse) just to pass the time. Unfortunately it carried with me to college. I know it's unhealthy, and there's no excuse but to say that I'm hooked. I will say, however, it's great for starting conversations where the situation allows it.
Since these pics appeared in my country, I collect them, and become happy whenever some new one gets in my hands. First one was "amputation". My favourite one: Erectile dysfunction.
It is complete bullshit to force companies to out these on their own products. How about you actually try to find a good alternative to smoking that others would like or ANY other way to lower smoker rates. Seriously this is PETA level scare tactics, it just screams nannystate.
i smoke but im not worried i can quit anytime i swears it
