So I'm looking for some new warm ups. Something with a little challenge. I play bass, so whether it's slapping, using a pick, or finger picking, I'm up for it. Share?
Don't do warm ups, just sit with your instrument and study everything until you can't keep your eyes open any longer. The more you discover with your instrument, the more you can apply to your playing. If you talking more about becoming more flexible and consistent with your fingers, well, practice scales or something. Put a metronome on in the background and keep playing until you've mastered different intervals of speed. I personally just like to practice improvising since I can't do much else. I taught myself how to play all of my instruments so I don't know anything about scales or music theory. I just know what different frets sound like from playing so much. Hmmm... Try and get something like a piano to sustain single notes so that you can play your bass along with it to discover harmonies and whatnot (if thats even what it's called..maybe it's scales I dunno XD) Oh and as far as slapping goes, it's a lot more complex than just slapping. It was discovered by a bass player that was trying to play both the percussive parts and the melodies of the bass for a song. The slapping part would fill in for the kick drum and the snapping/pulling part would fill in for the snare. Victor Wooten is a pretty good display of this but his style is more evolved since the beginning of the technique. You might have already known this and if you did, sorry for sounding like wikipedia. Finger picking is good. When I play the bass, I try to use my index, middle and fourth finger at once to cover more notes while I'm picking. So my fourth finger is picking the fourth string, middle on the third, index on the second and my thumb gets the first. Try getting a steady running melody with all your fingers picking each string one after the other. Sorry if I wrote too much and I hope this helps!
I warm up for bass by playing hell bent for leather

A challenging warm-up... Bit of an oxymoron? My warm-up before gigs goes something like: Chromatic 4-finger runs, Major/Minor Scales, Walking bass line, (slapping) Octaves, fifths and minor 7s (Covers most strings nicely). Gradually increasing tempo and complexity. Then I can play for longer, good for your hands.
A challenging warm-up... Bit of an oxymoron?
Haha, let me rephrase that. How about a new warm up, and something challenging to play, that would help with my dexterity. Warming up is the most interestingly boring thing about my day, especially at band practice, so I'd like something to have fun with while stretching my fingers. (Don't be the perve to say "vagina" or something along that line, because I know it's coming from this statement). =D
