The brilliantly weird, and largely unintuitive, Tribes: Ascend has endured a chequered past. It’s on-off-on again legacy mirrors that of an afternoon soap opera romance—having been brought back from the edge of extinction in late December last year via its first update in two years—however its latest update, named Parting Gifts, marks its curtain call. We caught up with developer Hi-Rez following last year’s rejuvenating patch 1.1, where the studio told us its mismanagement of Tribes: Ascend was “like death by a thousand cuts”.
The latest appropriately-named update brings the game to version 1.4 and signals the end of the line.

In conversation with Chris at the start of this year, Tribes’ creative director Sean McBride—who was a member of the original team that pushed for Hi-Rez to acquire the license in the first place—spoke of how relaunching in 2015 was more about steadying the ship, not necessarily about turning profit.
“We all know that player counts are not going to be super high,” he said about the game’s diminished community “The intention is to at least stretch it out over a longer tail, so, if we do need to leave it, we’ll have a planned date, so we can make sure everything’s in order. We didn’t do that last time. It was like ‘we all need to go onto Smite, right now.’”
Over on Reddit, it seems the community, what’s left of it, is already making peace with the fact Tribes: Ascend is no more. One user, Regginator12 , sums up his or her feeling thusly: “This game was so good while it lasted, such a wasted opportunity, I’ve never seen such a high speed FPS since with huge maps and no hitscan. RIP.”
Sad to see something that was so fun die.

I had such a blast playing this a few years ago, then I got really shitty somehow and I stopped playing. Shame it's gonna die.
geez talk about a misleading title

It's not going anywhere
VER VVX
Hi-Rez lost my trust and respect for what they did to Tribes, I will never play one of their games again. (Unless it's a new Tribes)

Still don't know what I should do with this.
Tribes Ascend nostalgia thread?

I'm so glad I got to play this game in its prime. It was some of the most fun I've ever had with a shooter, had an amazing community, and at its height it was the loving tribute and revival that Tribes absolutely deserved.
Could the title be any less accurate?

I played the fuck out of Star Siege in middle school, and I played the fuck out of Ascend in college.
Sad to see this go
geez talk about a misleading title
It's not completely misleading. Playerbase is dwindling, official support has been ended.
Only a matter of time
Yeah, the title is incredibly misleading. The game is not shutting down, it's just not going to have another update again for a long time. (If ever again)
Could the title be any less accurate?
Leave it to pcgamer to create shitty journalism
Do people really expect them to keep supporting a game that wasn't really earning then much money, especially when they had a smash hit to put their resources to? At least hi-rez returned to provide some patches for tribes ascend, which most companies wouldn't have done.
We literally had a thread about this already and it had the same misleading title. I don't know how you could've read the article while also thinking the title was okay. Infact when people reply "RIP so sad to see such a good game go" it kinda shows they didn't read it before posting.
bad reading x 1
It was sad that they never figured out good monetization and some other things until the very end.
On a side note, Hi-Rez did release all old tribes and starsiege games free to download some time ago.

PCgamer needs to take down this incredibly misleading article because potential players really will think the game is gone and it really will die
Kind of an unpopular opinion, but I think Hi-Rez has kind of redeemed themselves for me. I was also upset when they left Tribes in the state it was in and didn't think favorably of them to go and work on a moba instead.
But after playing Smite from close to the beginning (and falling in love it), to see it get more popular overtime, see them learn from their mistakes from Tribes, create one of the most generous F2P games after Dota 2, and to even go back and try to fix T:A's issues long after they left it; I think Hi-Rez has earned my respect and I wish them the best with Paladins.

thanks bub, adding to OP.
I tried playing it for weeks, and it never hooked me. I never knew what to do, no one else seemed to know what to do, and one person would always win the match by being completely unstoppable.
I still play it from time to time. Even without patches, I'll still be going back for more.

Someone should seriously change the name of this thread.

It's not even the last patch, just potentially the last major update, and only because the person that was in charge of directing where Tribes should go isn't around anymore.
Just going to quote my post about Paladins being released during this time, and Hi Rez in general.
The problem I have with Paladins being pre-released is Hi-Rez Studios.
I can't trust them to create a quality f2p project anymore due to the butchering of Tribes: Ascend. They took a well known shooter franchise, hyped people beyond belief for the game, then stopped development in favor of Smite to ride off the success of League of Legends and Dota/HoN at the time.
Paladins in it's current state along with the "clones" of Overwatch heroes shown off in the game just makes me think Hi-Rez is doing the same thing again. I cannot trust them as a consumer anymore.
Now that they have officially killed it, this makes me hate Hi Rez even more.

Honestly you should be banned for not reading the fucking OP and all the comments above like wow I'm amazed

Aside from valve hi-rez pretty much is the best F2P company, chill lol. They aren't a charity, they can't dedicate so many resources to tribes because it's really not worth their time atm. They might make a sequel of it eventually.
And I mean, tribes came out, was a good game, you could get every game-effecting item (including future releases!) for 40 bux, and we got plenty of time and support out of it. What else could one want? Servers are staying up, so you can always play it until it really does die, which will take awhile

Imagine thinking smite was purely riding in hype and didn't carve it's own niche in a grossly oversaturated market
Imagine being this mad while being blatantly wrong about everything you're arguing

are you reading the same post that i am, how could you possibly think he was mad
what part of his post is wrong? hirez dropped support for tribes initially when the moba storm started and they created smite - now there's a new class based shooter storm and they've created paladins
why would anyone not be slightly worried
presumably you're a hirez fan or something guessing by the anger in your post

Just on the note of being an overwatch clone, that's not really the case tbh.
To quote one of the developers.
"Overwatch was announced. We were shocked and not sure what direction to take. We were already so far along with Paladins, but we didn't want to compete directly against Blizzard.
We initially tried to find different ways to differentiate on game-play (different TTK, different style maps and game modes, different theme, etc), but the feedback from our tests, stats, and surveys showed that only a small part of our population was enjoying that style of game. In the end we said screw it and just made what we thought best, and closest to our original vision, even if people would think it's too close to Overwatch."

That game was trash. I don't miss it.

But it wasn't. I'm pretty sure I've seen you post this before and I'm pretty sure people have already explained to you why Tribes was dropped. You are the one who is angry and bitter than "your" game failed while a game you don't like is moving millions, not them. This is stupid and you know it.

And that's why you'll always be a sandraker.
