Despite emotional pleas from families of victims of the Newtown, Connecticut, shootings and broad public support nationwide, the plan to extend background checks to online and gun-show sales failed on a 54-46 vote, six votes short of the 60-vote hurdle needed to clear the Senate. Other measures backed by the Democratic president - including a proposal to ban rapid-firing "assault" weapons like the one used in Connecticut and a limit on ammunition magazines - also are expected to fail as the Senate conducts nine consecutive votes on gun-control legislation.
https://twitter.com/ReutersUS/status/324625713393197056 (that's about 40 minutes from when this thread was posted)
Fuck yeah.
I don't get it, how can anyone oppose this The AWB and high capacity magazines sure whatever but universal background checks don't seem like they should even be an issue
I'd say I'm pretty heavily pro-gun, but seriously, nothing bad can come out of background checks.
I just wish the panic would die down so I can buy some ammo, I just want to go out plinking :(
Yeah, nothing wrong with checking backgrounds on gun purchasers. We can't be selling guns to criminals.
keep your rapid fire and your high capacities, but sweet christ at least let us know you have a family history of criminal insanity before we give them to you. edit: semi-automatic fire**
fuck the senate for not passing it
I find it not stupid so much as pointless. How many deaths and mass shootings have resulted from the lack of a background check? The Sandy Hook shooter stole the guns. edit: I get dumbs for speaking the truth?
-fuck, snip-
Going to be interesting to see what happens now anyway. If the weakest of measures can't pass a Democrat-controlled Senate, where does Obama go now
FP I don't get it, how can anyone oppose this The AWB and high capacity magazines sure whatever but universal background checks don't seem like they should even be an issue
Smurfster, we already have universal background checks. To buy a gun online, you get one, to buy from a store, you get one. You even get background checked at gunshows. The only sales that aren't checked are private, non-dealer citizen to citizen.
starpluck what are you doing
This affects private-sales only, and they're already pretty ineffective. It's supposed to be a felony to "lie-and-try" to acquire a firearm from a commercial seller, but out of the 80,000 turned away, only 44 were charged. Meaning the people turned away can simply acquire firearms illicitly through other means.
Smurfster, we already have universal background checks. Most of mainstream media is calling it "expanded" background checks, which is the correct wording. Background checks have always existed for guns.
I don't know how to feel about this because I'm not sure what kinda shit they might have stuffed into that bill.
I bought a rifle a week and a half ago at a gun show and had to get a background check. If you buy online, it has to be shipped through an FFL holder, who conducts the background check and then transfers it. To my knowledge the only way to sell a gun without a background check is a private sale, which no amount of regulation in the world can force a background check on.
If you were wondering how current checks work:
I'd say I'm pretty heavily pro-gun, but seriously, nothing bad can come out of background checks.
Indeed. If you have nothing to hid, then you don't really need to worry about it.
i love guns as much as the next guy, but i shouldn't be allowed to go on a site like craigslists, find someone in my area selling a gun, meet him in a parking lot, and then buy the gun from him it's downright fucking stupid, there's literally no reason that gun transfers at gunshows and between two individuals can't be mediated via a FFL license holder

The only time a background check does not occur is when it is two individuals. There is no effective way to police such transactions, and there is definitely not enough manpower to do it. Gun registries effect these transactions somewhat, but that can still be circumvented.
I don't get it, how can anyone oppose this The AWB and high capacity magazines sure whatever but universal background checks don't seem like they should even be an issue
Stupid republicans in the senate are putting a filibuster on basically all bills. They defeated not taking a vote on the bill but that requires a super majority (60-40 minimum for). Basically republicans are the problem and need to get out of office if they want to do shit like this.
I don't get it, how can anyone oppose this The AWB and high capacity magazines sure whatever but universal background checks don't seem like they should even be an issue
Because 'hurr durr it will end in a national gun registry' This is the Republican party (and a few Democrats, sadly) They are STUPID AS FUCK and always will be.
Obama's speaking now. He's pissed http://live.reuters.com/Event/Politics/73447560
Biden is crying fucking hard with the other peeps. What bullshit. A provision failed to pass, stop acting like it's the renewal of Sandy Hook.
Obama's speaking now. He's pissed http://live.reuters.com/Event/Politics/73447560
Damn, he looks legitimately angry.
This will increase President Obama's Grey Hair tenfold
Honestly disappointed in our country for not passing this. This was the only thing that I had hoped to pass. At least close the loopholes for fucks sake!
