So recently I thought of making a little money for myself by repairing computers-- I might have gone a bit over my head after building my own computer and fixing a few problems that people around the school were having. Anyhow, this gangster-looking guy who sits next to turned around one day and asked me a question. This is paraphrased, of course. Him: "Hey, want to buy an ipod touch? Only $50." Me: "What's wrong with it?" Him: "Oh, the headphones don't work" This is where I should have just bought the damn thing. Instead: Me: "Oh, I can fix that." First mistake. Him: "Really?" Me: "Yeah, just pay me for the materials (and a bit extra) and we'll call it even." Second mistake, shouldn't have specified where the costs go. Him: "Alright, it's a deal." He hands me the itouch, I bring it home, look up a guide on how to open itouches. I see that it needs some special "ipod screwless entry tool", which looks kinda like a plastic screwdriver. So, being the impatient idiot I am, I take a screwdriver to it, cracking the glass screen. Third mistake. The next day, I tell him what happened and that it'll cost a bit more. He's okay with that, since I found a great deal on the itouch screens-- some place in Hong Kong sells then for $12, plus the entry tools; this is $70 less than Apple sells them for. Alright, he's not quite alright with me breaking the screen, and he now only offers to pay for materials. He's a hard sell, and I end up agreeing to a price way below what I was hoping (Fourth mistake!) The screen arrives around two weeks later, and it works, I plug it in. But while removing the LCD from the itouch, it breaks. Cracks. Fifth mistake. I tell him about it, and he's pissed. Now he wants a replacement. Naturally, I can't afford another $250 itouch, so I give him something of equivalent value, a 60gb ipod video (since all he used his 16gb itouch for was music and video). He seems happy with it, but he also says he wants me to look at his laptop. I give him the ipod a day later, and now he insists that i upgrade his laptop, because he believes that somehow me giving it a bigger hard drive will make it faster and better. I tell him that's not how it works, and now he's pissed, and I'm worried that he's going to say I stole his itouch. I can't just give it back-- he refuses to take it back, since now it's broken. What should I do? I've already told him to fuck off-- but he sits facing me and to be honest, I'm not a very threatening person, whereas he is. He's very insistent on getting as much out of me as he can, and part of me does feel that I owe him. TLDR version: I break some gangster-type's itouch while trying to fix it, I give him an ipod video as a replacement, but he wants more and I can't afford to give him more. Somehow I feel I may have left some details out. Edit: Oh right: -Yes, I'm not going to try anything this stupid any time soon. Since I have the itouch I'm going to practice microsurgery with it until I can figure out what I can and can't do in terms of repairs. -No, I can't just buy the damn thing off of him, he insists on selling it for the original value now. He's fucking with me, and I know it-- I just need a good way out that doesn't put me in a position to be sued or otherwise called a thief. (I'm dealing with a $250 device here, I'm not sure he's going to take this lightly.)
Maybe you should have some experience in fixing things before trying to fix things.
Run away to Canada.
Maybe you should have some experience in fixing things before trying to fix things.
took the words right out of my mouth
Why not just pay $50 for the broken Itouch
Stop letting him push you around. Buy a baseball bat and see if he still acts like you are his bitch.
Maybe you should have some experience in fixing things before trying to fix things.
Yeah I kinda figured that out-- I'm sticking to computers from now on
You broke it, it's your fault. Don't charge him for it.
I guess this is really your only option now.
Run away to Canada.

Maybe you should have some experience in fixing things before trying to fix things.
I think you mean he should get some experience before trying to sell his ability to fix things. You can't really get experience fixing things without fixing things.
Why not just pay $50 for the broken Itouch
He seems to have "forgotten" that he ever offered that price. I suspect he's using me.
Oh and one more thing.. If he does beat you up.. Just sue, you will get money. That is how America works.
Why didn't you just upgrade his hard drive instead of telling him he's wrong. Seems like that would have made him happy.
Why didn't you just upgrade his hard drive instead of telling him he's wrong. Seems like that would have made him happy.
Yeah, up the hard drive and run a virus scan so it seems like it got faster.
Don't fix things if you can't fix things.
Masturbate furiously and suicide when you're about to climax.
Why didn't you just upgrade his hard drive instead of telling him he's wrong. Seems like that would have made him happy.
A better idea would be to partition the hard drive, format it and then re-install the operating system.
Don't be a jerk, pay him the $50...
you're fucked
buy him tickets to a Yankees game
A better idea would be to partition the hard drive, format it and then re-install the operating system.
My point was to just do what he asked in order to make him happy.
sounds like it's probably not even his. he probably stole it and he's trying to get rid of it, but now he's pissed because he won't make bank off it.
stop calling it a fucking "iTouch" for starters.
accept that he has a bigger penis and get raped
Why didn't you just upgrade his hard drive instead of telling him he's wrong. Seems like that would have made him happy.
Sure, if you can send me $150 for a hard drive that's actually better than the one he already has.
Something like an iPod would probably be out of your reach if you have never physically repaired one before, especially if it is an internal hardware related problem. But if it is software you should fine if you know what you are doing.
Masturbate furiously and suicide when you're about to climax.
thanks, problem solved you can all go home, this looks like the best idea
thanks, problem solved you can all go home, this looks like the best idea
Oh wait one thing. What grade are you in? This would change things greatly. (as in if you are in middle school... don't count on the kid trying to beat you up... high school is a bit different)

Why didn't you just give him $50 after you broke it the first time and say You bought it?
