I was in Toronto yesterday for the Picasso exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario. I was walking back from some shops downtown with some friends, and as we turned the corner and came to the front entrance of the building we heard some honking and watched a guy almost die.
So basically, this guy on a bike (bicycle, not a motorbike) was going along the road in front of the exhibit as a streetcar was passing him. When he was between the streetcar and a black car on the curb, the person in the black car opened their door right in front of the guy on the bike. To avoid being cardoor'd, the biker had to swerve right infront of the streetcar. Unfortunately, however, the streetcar smashed into the back of his bike and he was flung forward with the bike as the streetcar slammed on the brakes. As he and his bike were still being pushed/crushed along the street, this guy was hastily trying to crawl away, only managing to crawl to the side of the streetcar as his foot became trapped underneath along with his bike. Luckily the streetcar stopped right before the wheel would have crushed his foot/leg, but it was trapped along with this mangled bike. He sounded so damn shaken as he got up and carried his bike away, and luckily some people wrote down the license plate of the black car before it just drove away.
So basically this guy almost got his entire body run over by a streetcar along with his bike, but after he escaped that he was also not even seconds away from having his leg amputated by the wheels.
I'm glad the dude was pretty much unharmed after all that and so many people came to help him. It was a pretty good day, and holy shit that Picasso exhibit was sweet-ass.

It just scares me a bit to think of what I could've seen go down, especially considering the clear view.
So I'm guessing that the black car did it on purpose? Considering that the black car just drove off.

It could've been an accident, but they then didn't want to assume responsibility.

Or maybe they assumed that, since he got up just fine, there was nothing to assume responsibility of.
holy shit i was just round there a couple of days ago
almost isnt a trigger
What is a streetcar
That guy must have been fucking terrified. I'd be pretty pissed off if my bike got run over, though.

Trolly or what have you. Basically buses that run on those little rails you see embedded in the street.
the possibility getting car doored always scares the fuck out of me when i ride

shithead motorists
Maybe its just me but i have being seeing more a more bad drivers. People who just don't pay attention or speed excessively. In the past 6 months i have almost been hit around 10 times. Usually would be just by a rear end accident but ive had others change lanes without looking and forcing me over to avoid a wreck.

Oh like a tram
man I shudder to think about having a body part destroyed by one of those things
I would have just crashed into the door. Fuck going in front of a tram.

Actually, my brakes are really good.
Have you thought about joining the Red Cross to have a better knowledge of first aid in case of situations like this if they go bad? If I recall correctly, Canada has a strong Red Cross organisation.
And if you feel that you need to talk about this event (or other things that bother you) you can always talk to other members or even professionals within the Red Cross.
I was about to point out that it is hard to get your legs amputated from a car but then you guys pointed out that it was a tram.
Yeah, that could've been a lot worst.
I'm glad we have proper bicycle roads (or sections at the very least) in the Netherlands. I can't even see any in that picture, and it's a pretty crowded area. Eindhoven, a pretty crowded city, would have bicycle roads in an area like that.
Just so people can see what it looks like

They broke his bike. Probably fucked up the tires at the very least. The injuries seem to be minor in the end, but just because he looks okay doesn't mean you can just drive off like a douche.
Oh shit I missed that Picasso exhibit. How was it?

They had so much stuff, it took up roughly 9 huge rooms. It was delicious. They even had that bull's head he made with a bike seat and handlebars.

Oh my god... I was thinking of a trolly not even half that size... Holy shit, that would have ripped his leg clean off.

Doesn't mean much to some people. They assume that if the person gets up fine they have no reason to hang around. I guess they assume he's on a cheap walmart bike?

Oh, fuck. Getting hit by that looks like it would resemble getting hit by a fucking train.

Why would the cost of his bike factor into things? Their negligence almost resulted in a dude getting maimed or killed. That's not something you just drive away from!

I'm not saying I would. Why are you thinking I would? 'sides I'd hang around regardless merely because the law tells me to, regardless of my own personal feelings on the matter.
This is why I take the lane to avoid riding in the door zone and move other once it's safe to do so. The people behind you can wait 10 seconds, and someone is much more likely to open a door on you than rear end you when they can clearly see you.
I live in the country so I don't have to encounter a lot of shithead drivers, but last week when I was travelling back from the city I had a women who was moving into my lane and would have hit the front of my car if I hadn't hit the brakes. I even got into the other lane and laid on my horn and she didn't even look at me.

Uh, I never implied that at all! When I say "you," I mean "you" in the grander sense. As in, like, everybody. How did you not understand that? (This time I do mean "you" as in you. Just for clarification).
I witnessed an accident at school, car slowed and turned right without noticing the guy in the bike lane right next to him. The guy got hit from behind, lept off his bike, and hit the ground on his side. The car drove off.
I went and picked up the guy's bike for him, he was virtually unharmed, but shaken and anxious. It's pretty scary when you witness these things in real life, even if nothing harmful happens.
