Johansson is set to star in DreamWorks’ adaptation of the popular anime pic “Ghost in the Shell.” Deadline Hollywood had reported that the actress had the offer to star but at the time she was still undecided about taking the role. Sources now say she has agreed to star in the pic.
The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.
I'd watch it.
Not a bad casting by any means, but I'm not holding out any hope that this movie will be good.
what a boring choice
It's not a bad choice, just very boring and safe.
Also the fact she doesn't seem to actually give a shit about the source material means I doubt we'll get a lot of passion (or effort) out of her acting.
Let's see how Hollywood will ruin the infinite potential of this movie.
I would like it more if the actress was more like Trinity from Matrix, IMO SJ looks too soft.
I think doing an American GitS movie is a bad idea in general.
I guess it's not a terribly bad casting choice, but why make a live action version of Ghost in the Shell? That series is essentially a benchmark for what you can pull off through animation, and to make a suitable "real" counterpart to that world you'd pretty much wind up painting everything over in cg anyway.
I hope the acting, writing, and style is focused towards Stand Alone Complex and not the first two movies.
I hope it's a good adaption like Edge of Tomorrow and not a bad adaption like Dragonball Evolution. (I realize one is a graphic novel and the other is a manga, but I don't think it makes a difference in this case)
The concept of Ghost in the Shell sounds extremely interesting, but the anime is so ridiculously "Japanese" (?) it's cringeworthy. For me anyway as I don't particularly like animes. The only way I can watch Dragonball Z is the westernized Abridged version, the original is just so fucking weird.

Doing an American live-action version of just about any foreign movie is just about pointless imo. This is probably going to be "that movie where Scarlett Johnasson was a naked robot and things blew up :)".

$$$
She's a bad choice and it will be a shit movie. Don't even kid yourselves into thinking it will be anything more than GitS in name only.
I still remember watching GitS when I was a little kid and it freaking the fuck out of me
Its just going to be 2 hours of grrl-power with gratuitous shots of SJ's spandex covered ass in slow mo and her pouting at the camera.
I'm racking my brain to think of when hollywood has ever done a decent adaptation of a jap anime film and I can't think of a single one.

That would be preferable to "that movie where Scarlett Johanson was a naked robot that spoke in really long boring monotone monologues."

I don't know what you are talking about. Are you saying 4 foot tall animes that are actually mines is "ridiculously Japanese"?

Apparently Edge of Tomorrow turned out well but I'm not crazy about Tom Cruise so I never saw it. But that was also only based off a book in the first place, which also got a manga at the same time as the movie came out.
Also, yeah, this screams of "We have a license sitting around, time to make some dolla dolla ya'll".

edge of tomorrow took very little from the source material (which is a regular novel not a graphic novel btw) so while it was alright it was kinda disappointing.

i'm pretty much expecting it to be the same for this
a hollywood remake of one of the best movies ever made by a tv ad director and dreamworks
lol

But in seriousness, even if this is colossally horrible, at least it serves to alert the public to it so that a very loud message of "No, no, go watch SAC instead." can reach more people.

That's from Arise, which is basically fanfiction :v:
SAC had some ridiculous outfits though
...I wonder why we have an american to star in a show based in japan trying to be a japanese person.
That sounds strange, but then again, why the hell not?
Dragonball Evolution was a complete success, right? Let's try it again with something else!

It's probably not even going to be a remake as such, but a re-imagining, given that it's probably going to be westernised to fuck. In a way, hopefully it is rather than a straight remake otherwise it's probably going to be awful, given the replacing of the japanese character witha non japanese one (although in the context of the shell, it's easy enough to explain away the western body, sort of.). But really, if it is an actual remake, why couldn't you have gotten Rinko Kikuchi to play Kusanagi?

They'll probably just change the setting to neo-Chicago or something like that.
I have a bad feeling about this, honestly.

but the first movie is pinnacle of the franchise
Dear fucking god no.
I'll watch but I'll probably get more entertainment from complaining about it
Still waiting on that HBO version of Monster
but the first movie is pinnacle of the franchise
depends on what you're looking for really
the first film has gorgeous animation and a pretty simple theme which it accomplishes well
the series has a much more developed world, gives all characters room to grow, and is really entertaining if you enjoy political shit
personally I prefer SAC slightly over the first film
Just the line "Scarlett Johansson as Motoko Kusunagi" is enough to make it pretty obvious how awful this is going to be.
In other news I never realized how annoying the spelling of her name was. Ssccarrllett Jjohhannssonn.
but the first movie is pinnacle of the franchise
The first movie is looked at with way too much rose tinted vision. It was good for the time but saying it's the pinnacle of anything is a massive disservice to SAC.
The only anime adaptation I ever had hope for was the Cowboy Bebop one starring Keanu Reeves, that never really developed. Mainly because Keanu actually really liked the show, and you don't really need Asian actors/actresses since the cast is predominately caucasian.
Also, why does Hollywood have to keep casting white people as Japanese characters? Get Japanese-Americans, or at least mixed race Asians.
