• Penis in Space - A series of "not-chiptunes" made with 8bit-ish instruments

Hi, I've never posted here before as I don't really consider myself a musician (I'm mostly a programmer guy). I discovered trackers thanks to WarioWare: DIY, which is a pretty fun DS game that happens to feature a music editor. Since then, I've been composing random songs every once in a while, whenever I feel inspired and have nothing else to do. I've kept them mostly for myself, but since I've just finished my latest one I thought I might as well try to post them here just so I know whether they're actually good or not. You can listen to all of them here: http://peniscorp.com/dikmusic 01 to 12 are the songs I made with the music editor from WarioWare: DIY, which is extremely limited. They are shit. You might want to skip those. 13 was made with NitroTracker, a homebrew application someone made for the Nintendo DS. I made that one when I decided to transition from DIY to something a bit less limited. 14 to 20 were made with ModPlug Tracker, which is the one I eventually settled for. They're the best sounding ones in my opinion. Some of them are remakes of the old ones I made in DIY. Some of the songs are supposed to loop, which is why they abruptly cut off at the end. All of those songs use samples normally found in chiptunes, although I don't think they can be considered chiptunes since the end result isn't 8-bit at all and there are way more than 4 channels. Please don't mind the names. I've named my very first song "penis in space" and since then, giving my songs dick-related names kinda became a habit. :v: [editline]dicks[/editline] I uploaded the MPT ones to Soundcloud, might be easier to listen to them. I'm quite a fan of the penis genre of music if I may say so myself.
Hey glad you like those tracks. :v: They actually mean a lot to me and I've been really trying to make songs that "tell stories", like someone said here. A lot of the chiptunes I've listened to are just the same pattern repeated over and over with only slight variations, it's a real shame because they usually start with a pretty catchy base pattern. I hope I managed to do something different there. Anything I should improve? I haven't posted those anywhere else so I never really got any constructive criticism.
I'm not really a fan of the chiptune style personally, but those melodies are absolutely magnificient.
Oh wow, so much dik music. Actually sounds pretty good overall, might use a bit of mastering here and there but seeing as you hardly see yourself as a producer I get where that might be lacking (mastering I consider to be one of the hardest parts in music production). Most songs have a epic-gba-game-music kinda feel, which is alot more than most chiptunes I find on the internet. So I guess you did a good job adding emotion to the songs. tl;dr great composition, work on EQ/mastering.
EQ-mastering
Oh so that's how it's called. The lack of mastering is precisely why the songs sound really "clogged up" in some parts, right? I knew something had to be done about it but never figured out how it was called. I'll look it up, thanks! :v:
EQ-ing is simply taking each instrument and ducking out unwanted frequencies and raising parts in the sound you want to stand out. Mastering is the total job of getting each sound to stand out "on its own" so to speak. Really the opposite of it being clogged up, so I guess that would be a right term. Mastering is done by a combination of EQ-ing, compression, and limiting (and probably a whole lot more, but that's kinda where I put my end point usually) [editline]7th November 2013[/editline] EQ-ing (Equalisation) is simply taking each instrument and ducking out unwanted frequencies and raising parts in the sound you want to stand out. Could do better.
Time to be a judgemental asshole. Jokes, it's just I really like chiptune, so am hella opinionated. Also, for the record, they are chiptune. Stuff written in mpt, as well as nitrotracker are more demoscene/keygen than chip that's written on gameboy/nes/c64 but it's still chip. Some consoles only had 2 channels, some had 4, some had more (nes expansion chips) so don't be to fussed about how many channels you use. Only listened to the first three that you uploaded to soundcloud, but I can say that I'm already a fan. I like the eerie-ness about them. I'd suggest maybe posting them on some chiptune specific sites, to get better CC. [editline]wait[/editline] you mentioned that you didn't really like the samples that you use, there might be at lest one you like in here
Hey it's been a long time since I made anything. Figured I'd post in this thread instead of creating a new one. Quite happy with how this one turned out. I have so many other cool sounding stubs but I just can't be arsed finishing them. :v:
Every time I finish one of these I think it's the best one I've ever made, then after listening to it over and over again I find tons of imperfections and suddenly it's not so good anymore. Ah well. :v: I still really like this one though.
really nice man, I started listening to your stuff again a couple of days ago, and you can see how much you've improved
Hah glad you like it! I'm still not very good at balancing volumes though, I'll try tweaking them a bit as you suggested and see if it sounds any better.
Your melodies are awesome, you manage to bring emotion to such limited instruments. Great job dude, keep posting your new stuff here.
