• Should this really be counted as a College course?

Hello, fellow Facepunchers! Seeing as you all are a fairly computer-intelligent crowd, I thought I'd bring this up to you. So, I'm a college freshman. Whoo. One of my classes is an online class. It's called "Computers and Society." Trust me, it's as retarded as it sounds. Here are some snippets from the syllabus/course description.
Course Description "A hands-on instruction to the use of personal computers and software, with an introductory examination of the effects of computer technology on contemporary society. Topics will include productivity applications, creation of web pages, social and ethical issues in computing; privacy, security, censorship, and the changes in work, school, and entertainment fostered by computing."

Course Goals Computers have become an essential component of our everyday lives, appearing in almost every facet of school, work, and home. Our goal in this course is to produce students that are comfortable using computers and that have a general understanding of what a computer is, conceptually how it functions, and to gain some practical experience working with common applications software, specifically Microsoft Office and Google Sites. This course satisfies the following learning outcomes of area B: 1. To develop students who are better prepared for career demands in the 21st Century 2. To develop increased awareness of the diverse sources of information and tradition In order to satisfy the above learning outcomes, and upon completing this course, you should be able to: 1. Create formatted documents using a word processor 2. Create electronic presentations using presentation software 3. Perform basic data analysis using a spreadsheet program 4. Create web pages 5. Identify and explain important ethical and social issues in the use of computer and information technology Graded homework in this class is designed to assess the above learning outcomes

Textbooks 1. Practical Microsoft Office 2007, Parsons, Oja, and Mulder, Course Technology, 2007, 1-4239-0604-7 2. Computers in Our World, Amer, 2nd edition, Course Technology, 2007, 1-4239-2515-7. Software Microsoft Office 2007 (Microsoft Windows Operating system). Other versions of Microsoft Office are not acceptable!
I won't post the rest as it's irrelevant to my point. (It's just stuff like the Grading Scale, information about the instructors, homework, the honesty policy, etc.) To be quite honest, I'm pretty sure a vast majority of the Facepunch population were able to do all of the listed items by the age of eleven. Your thoughts on this class?
and you can get course credits for this? hahahaha
This is practically identical to my IT course in High School. Needless to say I'm forced to take it. :frown:
Sounds like the computer app class i took in 7th grade
Yes. Despite what you may think the vast majority of people don't understand this, be glad you're part of the minority that does.
reminds me of a class my old school had called ASDAN, I can't remember what that stands for but it taught the idiots of the school life skills like using a toaster and basic addition and subtraction. All the chavs were in it. Not a real course though, you didn't get anything for it. Actually sounds a bit more like GCSE ICT, that was the most boring GCSE I took.
A nick name for that is SPASDAN, because it's usually the spastics that take it.
Darn, I was gonna say this.
By eleven? my mom wouldn't let me use a computer till i was eleven, i still don't know shit. That course would be useful to me :saddowns:
This is practically identical to my IT course in High School. Needless to say I'm forced to take it. :frown:
Same here. Only difference is we don't design webpages, and we use Access instead. Oh, and everything is from 2000, so when we learn it, it's a decade old already. Today, we learned what the toolbars do in word! :woop:

That's a college course? Looks like just a basic "Learn how to use Word and Excel" class.

It's a free credit, even though I still think it's dumb. Most people can hardly use a mouse. Most people can't even touch type. Also I texted you.
wtf is a free credit? it just goes on because you wasted your time doing basic shit? i want 18 of them now please!
wtf is a free credit? it just goes on because you wasted your time doing basic shit? i want 18 of them now please!
Huh I'm saying that it's a piss easy class because it's online so I doubt very much will be expected and she already knows it all. How was that hard to understand???

A lot of people take classes like this. For most of this forum, we think it's stupid. But there's a shit ton of people who don't understand power point and whatnot. Hell, I had to teach my mom how to copy and paste a few weeks ago, and her last job she had for 3 years had her using a computer!
Sounds similar to a class in middle school I took? Seriously. Schools are fucking shit when it comes to computer classes. Only one I ever took where I actually learned something, was in my highschool freshmen class. But the teacher still didn't know shit at all. As the quote goes. "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. And those who can't teach, teach teachers."
At first I thought the class would be able how technology is affecting society and the social aspects of human interaction. Then I read it
Not everyone understands computers as well as you do sweetiepie.
I'm taking a course in African hand drumming next semester, apparently it's piss easy and you don't even have to show up to pass. I will though because it sounds fun
I'm taking a course in African hand drumming next semester, apparently it's piss easy and you don't even have to show up to pass. I will though because it sounds fun
I think that's one of the most badass classes I've ever heard of.
To get my degree, I had to take a Computers 101 class....first lesson was how to activate the Start menu, I shit you not.
You think that is stupid..i got a class worst then that. Introduction to University studies. Yes it is a course and yes I get 3 credits for it, it is ridiculous.
Seriously? a college course? That sounds expected from a high school, but college??? I wonder if I could just test out of it. Would be piss easy.

I had to take that class for my associates. You would be surprised how many older folks don't know how to use a computer.... Easy credits though, so I can't complain.
