PRESIDENT Vladimir Putin says Russia will permanently keep a navy squadron in the Mediterranean Sea to protect its interests.
Speaking at Thursday's meeting with the military brass, Putin said the move shouldn't be interpreted as sabre-rattling.
He said the Mediterranean is a "strategically important region, where we have interests connected with ensuring Russia's national security".
General Valery Gerasimov said Russian squadron currently deployed to the area consists of 16 navy ships.

this is the perfect response to the bullshit american 'oh it's national security that's all' i think
somehow world powers are trolling eachother
This is not a challenge, Americans, as we, like you, take our national security very seriously, and would hate to see you compromise it through 'ideological disagreement' with any of our methods.
I mean seriously, if I were somehow in a leading position in a country not in NA, I would take having our citizens data mined just in case they ever *might* pose a threat to the almighty US as basically an unwritten declaration of war. Like, it doesn't matter how much we work with this country or how much of a dictator our leader is, the US considers us all equal threats, and will deal with any of us the same way if given the chance.
yeah this has nothing to do with that
I feel a lot safer now.

This is trying to sound really deep and poetic but all I hear is "He who fights monsters" but in a completely wrong way.
hurr
The article is written as if they're fucking supervillains. No shit they'd want something there, they fucking border it in the Black Sea.
When the Russian Navy is somewhere permanently, it's generally safe to assume that something sunk.
This is a continuation of Russian Cold War tactics. They used to move a squadron into the med whenever their allies in the Middle East were getting threatened, as in the Yom Kippur and Six Day wars. But that fleet was never permanently stationed out of the Black Sea as it would have been a major threat to the 6th Fleet and changed their deployments drastically.
So this should be seen as another heavy handed show of force like we've before in Ossetia and it's been building up to this since they started reforming around 2007. It's pretty likely that more is to come.
Who cares? Mediterranean is a NATO pond.
