• Renters Face Eviction after 3 calls to 911
HILADELPHIA--Last summer, Lakisha Briggs' ex-boyfriend, who was living with her, allegedly smashed an ashtray across her face, then stabbed her in the neck with the broken glass. She was airlifted to a Philadelphia hospital. Briggs had let him move in after a jail stint for a previous attack because she'd been afraid to call police when he showed up at her door. Not necessarily because of the threat of violence, but because one more call to 911 and Briggs knew she would lose her home, a tidy row house she rented in Norristown for herself and her 3-year-old daughter. Norristown has what's called a three strikes law, which threatens renters with eviction if they call 911 three times within four months. Their landlords lose their rental license under the ordinance, which is designed to promote safe neighborhoods in the gritty suburb. ... "I felt like I was being punished for being assaulted," Briggs, a 34-year-old nursing assistant, said Friday. ... The lawsuit alleges that the ordinances disproportionately affect women, since they are more often the victims of domestic violence, and that the federal Violence Against Women Act protects their housing rights. What kind of an ill-conceived law is that? It in no way could possibly make neighbourhoods safer, it just seems to force people to sweep it under the carpet.
wtf that is like retarded who in their right mind thought that would be a good idea
I have a feeling this will be struck down or modified, but not because it's discriminatory against women. It's just generally a dumb idea. It will probably be changed to "if 911 is called on you specifically committing a crime you and you alone can be evicted" instead of "if you are old and have 3 medical emergencies you can be evicted". Although I don't see a purpose for it in the first place - landlords can just put a zero-tolerance clause in the lease, which is pretty common anyway, and evict them themselves. Funneling it by 911 calls seems like a really haphazard way of managing that.
What the fuck is this bullshit? 3 calls to 911 in 4 months = rental license removed, and this is supposed to promote safe neighbourhoods? All it's gonna achieve is situations like this.
Everyone should stop calling 911 if there's an emergency so that no more emergencies happen
What the fuck is this if you have an emergency three times you get evicted this shit should be illegal
Everyone should stop calling 911 if there's an emergency so that no more emergencies happen
Its like the lady that was trying to organize a campaign to move the deer crossings signs to a less populated area so the deer would stop crossing into heavy traffic and causing crashes.
