Rosemont police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 12:47 a.m. to the Hyatt Regency Hotel at 9300 Bryn Mawr to a report that someone broke a bottle with a chemical with a strong chlorine smell on the ninth floor. People in room 963 reported that there was a strong chlorine smell and at least four people were forced to go out on the hotel room balcony.
Firefighters at about 1:00 a.m. found a broken glass bottle on the ninth floor in the stairwell that initially showed a reading as high as 20.6 on the chlorine meter. Next, firefighters made entry into the stairwell and firefighters reported that “whatever the substance is, it is overloading our chlorine meter.”
At 1:04 a.m. firefighters reported that the source is plain glass jar with a white powdered substance as contents. In the open air environment of the vestibule, firefighters detected a reading of 4 on the chlorine meter.
Well, that's a little scary.
That's all over my twitter right now. Before this happened I was really feeling bummed because a lot of my friends were there, but now I have to say I am lucky I didn't have the money to go.
Damn, plan failed I guess.
Holy shit.

Well that's useful.
Well that's useful.
A rating of 4 out of chlorine? That is off the charts!
Of the people that were taken to hospital, at least one was complaining about their lungs "burning", so this shit's serious.
On the upside, according to reports on Twitter, the Hyatt is taking responsibility for the bill for ambulances and medical care for con and hotel guests affected by the incident.
Also, they evacuated from a furcon to a dog show from what I heard :v:
Geez, one of my friends is there. Hope he is ok.
He isn't responding to skype, though the last thing he said was that they had been moved to some hangar because it was cold outside.
I understand that a lot of people here don't like furries, but like it or not, they're humans too. They don't deserve to die, especially not by a chemical attack.
One of my exes is attending, I hope she's alright. It's been, like, 3 hours since it happened so I assume things are fine and she's asleep, but she's not responded to me and that worries me.
My friend responded, and the stuff is aparently cleaned up and they are being returned to their rooms

What a heart.
[sp]If it were my ex, I'd hope she inhaled the whole fuckin' bag.[/sp]

Did I just see you wish death upon someone?

[del]This is allegedly the source of the gas, between the 9th and 10th floors, in one of the stairwells.[/del] I'm seeing a claim on Twitter asserting that hotel security is treating it as deliberate chemical sabotage. We won't know for sure until the hotel or the cops officially make a statement, but after seeing that photo I believe it.
Someone tweeted to the person who took the above photo,
Careful of misinformation. That's clearly ABC fire extinguisher chemical powder.
Multiple people on twitter said it's a CFC leak from the hotel's HVAC system.
Multiple people on twitter said it's a CFC leak from the hotel's HVAC system.
That might be true, but furries and rumours go together, especially when you have a lot of people and indefinite facts. The OP article has quotes from firefighters about a broken glass jar of powdery white shit that's highly concentrated in chlorine, whatever it is.
If the hotel's HVAC shat a bunch of CFCs onto a stairwell floor and the broken glass is incidental, the Hyatt's in for a world of hurt.
Twitter also had late-ass people posting get out now like 45 minutes after the actual evacuation was underway and people were already being herded into the dog show next door.
edit: hope it was just an accident
What sort of white powered substance smells like chlorine?

Bleach powder mixed with ammonia?
I originally came in here to laugh thinking it was gonna be some neckbeard with crack, but a random chemical attack is some seriously scary shit.
Damn the plan failed...I mean thank goodness help arrived......

A bleach powder.
probably just a diaperfur or two had an accident
Saw tweets about people saying they could smell bleach or gas, feeling seriously dizzy/out of breath, a few mentioned people vomiting. One tweet said between 15 and 20 people had been hospitalized.
Bleach powder mixed with ammonia?
If you piss in a toilet filled with Bleach its awful so it could be something like that
Damn the plan failed...I mean thank goodness help arrived......

Bleach powder mixed with ammonia?
It's yiff, in it's purest form.
One tweet said between 15 and 20 people had been hospitalized.
Update since posting: A friend who checked himself into the hospital as a precaution just spoke with Rosemont police, it seems everyone who was hospitalized has been released.
