What is Halloween?
Halloween (or Hallowe’en ... but also known as Samhain, Summer’s End, All Hallow’s Eve, Witches Night, Lamswool, and Snap-Apple), is a holiday that's celebrated annually on the night of October 31. It originated in Ireland, and is celebrated in quite a few countries including Ireland itself, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Sweden among others. It's celebrated in a variety of ways and activities including trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, "haunted house" tours, carving pumpkins (Jack-o'-lanterns) and reading / watching scary stories / movies.
Why is it celebrated?
In ancient Britain, the Celts celebrated the fire-festival of Samhain on October 31. This day marked the end of summer, the close of the harvest season and the return of the herds from pasture. It was also the eve of the New Year in both Celtic and Anglo Saxon times and the date when laws and land tenures were renewed.
For the ancient Celts, the turning of one year into the next was a magical time. The souls of the dead were believed to revisit their homes on this night. Fairies, who were dangerous and hostile to humans, were also believed to be especially active on this night, waiting to trick people into fairy mounds and keep them trapped forever. To protect themselves against such evil spirits, the ancient Celts lit huge bonfires on this night - which thus became a fire-festival. Over time, human imagination filled this night with all sorts of witches, hobgoblins, black cats, demons and fairies roaming around.
Irish immigrants carried the secular practices of Halloween to America in the 19th century, where mischief making by young people on the night became part of the observances. This would often include turning over sheds, or breaking windows, and result in serious damage to property.
My question for facepunch...
What are you doing for Halloween this year? What costume are you going to wear? Do you have any funny/scary/interesting stories? Share them!
Remember, Halloween is a fun tradition but always be safe. When you go out at nighttime, don't go alone and always bring a flashlight.

Funny story 'bout halloween from a few years ago. I was dressed up as a zombie/robot/pirate, my friend was a regular zombie, and the other one was being something boring like a solider I think. We went to this one ladies house and went to get candy, so my friend decided to play on his zombie costume and said "Can I eat you instead of the candy?" He didn't realize it at first, but the lady took it completely wrong and told us to get off her property :saddowns:
Aren't you kids a little old for Halloween? :colbert:
edit: Halloween as in trick or treating. Partying is the shit.

Haha.
I'm not going as anything.
I'm just going to make myself look scary.. But, y'know, any excuse to wear make-up :v:

Well technically, you can be any age to enjoy Halloween. You don't have to just go trick or treating. You could go out and scare people, commit pranks, or go to parties.

I thought that was the trick.

3 boxes? I guess you guys don't like Halloween. :smith:
nope the idea of a fanciful holiday with candy and dressing up in costumes kind of goes out the window when you discover pussy
My friend and I are planning to wear these and stare at people, an SA tradition as I understand

I may also get a vuvuzela to go with it
Halloween is my favorite holiday. Even more than Christmas.
Something about being able to dress up and scare the shit out of little kids brings a sort of warm fuzziness to my heart.
I'm going to be Michael Myers. I'm going to wear boots that make me taller so that I'll be really really tall.
Basically my costume will be:

Wow, that's pretty badass.
-snip-
Probably going to check out Halloween Haunt at Canada's Wonderland. Never been before, some of my friends love it. I'm wimpy so I know I will definately get freaked out in the mazes and stuff.
If you're rich, get one of these masks:

im just gonna get stoned with some friends then try to get some candy
I'm doing the same as inchoface, but I will probably dress up as the guy from My Bloody Valentine.
i'm working at a haunted house run by the community and local law enforcement to raise some money for the hard workin' people in the police force and firefighter corps.
I normally bike around and take candy from bowls that people left out.
It's ok, I'm just protecting the kids from all that poisoned candy that pedophiles and serial killers leave out! :downs:
Going to sit in a chair for 4 hours instead of trick-or-treating, dressing up as some scary shit, still haven't decided.
When kids come up, turn you're head and stand up with a plastic knife.
The reaction is priceless.
I'm going as a creepy guy behind a lamp.
Pedophile clothes + creepy smile + lamp attached to head = fun.
im dressing up as a penis and im going to throw semen at people
