• So the CEO of Reddit admitted to editing negative comments about him
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has confessed to modifying the posts of some users on the most visible Donald Trump-supporting "subreddit" community after they repeatedly slung verbal abuse in his direction. The story begins earlier this week, when The New York Times published a report on Comet Ping Pong, a Washington DC pizza place that a false news item on social media had pegged as the center of a child-abuse ring run by Hillary Clinton and Democratic National Committee chair John Podesta, despite a lack of any evidence. Following that report, Reddit took steps to shut down the "r/Pizzagate" subreddit community, which had the stated goal of proving the existence of a conspiracy centering on Comet Ping Pong. "We don’t want witchhunts on our site," says the warning that replaced the Pizzagate page on Reddit. The move to shut down r/Pizzagate proved controversial to users of "r/The_Donald," Reddit's most popular community for supporters of Donald Trump. Those users repeatedly left comments to the effect of "f**k u/spez" and other forms of abuse, including Huffman's "u/spez" Reddit name in the post to make sure he was notified of each new message. On Wednesday afternoon, members of "The_Donald" noticed that their posts had changed without their knowledge or consent: Instead of referencing Huffman himself, the posts now hurled the same expletives at the moderators of the "The_Donald" community. Angry "The _Donald" members accused Reddit leadership of modifying or otherwise censoring their posts — which turned out to be correct, when Huffman posted the following comment, confessing that it was him personally who was performing the changes
Source: https://www.yahoo.com/news/ceo-reddit-confessed-modifying-posts-022041192.html Obviously there are going to be people saying that this isn't newsworthy because "It's reddit who cares lmao" but I think this is pretty important considering that reddit is a pretty large social media site, and whether you like it or not, r/the_donald was pretty influential in this election and will continue to be during Trump's administration. This could just be a giant ruse by the CEO because apparently he likes to fuck with people like that (Think: Garry) but this is pretty terrible. tl;dr: Reddit Admins banned a subreddit that accused Bill Gates and Hillary Clinton of being in a pedophile ring. It was deleted because it mostly consisted of people trying to dox other people r/the_donald then flipped out, started making threads and comments in r/the_donald about how spez is a pedophile himself and "fuck u/spez" became a thing Spez was genuinely tired of r/the_donald so he just started editing all the comments to say "fuck r/the_donald mods" because the moderators were encouraging this behavior. People noticed, and later Spez admitted to doing it and apparently the community moderators are pissed at him.
While this is fucking hilarious (and fuck r/The_Donald), he went way too far. Hell, he might have to step down for this.
its funny in it's own way. but it really sets a bad precedent you know? and it will fuel conspiracy theories regarding the reddit admins for years to come.
While this is fucking hilarious (and fuck r/The_Donald), he went way too far. Hell, he might have to step down for this.
This is the most optimistic thing I've read all week.
Reddit a shitty place? Gosh I can't believe it!
its funny in it's own way. but it really sets a bad precedent you know? and it will fuel conspiracy theories regarding the reddit admins for years to come.
I genuinely hate and despise that he did this because it basically validated any conspiracy theory involving CEOs of websites and Censorship. Not to mention that it further reinforces their view that dirty liberals are out to get them.
its funny in it's own way. but it really sets a bad precedent you know? and it will fuel conspiracy theories regarding the reddit admins for years to come.
People on The_Donald were already suspecting editing, and shadowbanning. It's pretty crazy that a CEO can go into a subreddit that he dislikes, specifically to edit a post. It's very, very distasteful, and will only make people dislike them more. "Been a hard week" even though it's Wednesday. Come on, lad. Grow a pair.
the_Donald is absolute cancer and it's just... so baffling and disheartening to see it validated through trump's election not even my shitty irreverent internet funbox is safe from all this presidential nonsense
looks like they learned fuck all from the gamergate fiasco
Yeah i'm sure it's easy to just deal with a huge swathe of the internet doing everything they can to fraudulently assert you're a pedo.
That subreddit sounds like a daycare center, judging by all the name-calling. I don't blame him for messing with them lmao.
Yeah i'm sure it's easy to just deal with a huge swathe of the internet doing everything they can to fraudulently assert you're a pedo.
As much as false accusations of pedophillia are pretty fucking terrible, the CEO needed to stay cool. But on the other hand this isn't the first time the_donald and admins clashed. Basically one of the moderators of r/the_donald was talking shit about the reddit admins, so one of the global reddit admins was like "okay time to correct the record" and linked screenshots of the r/the_donald mod being a fucking child in a private conversation, proving whatever that moderator was talking about wrong. That moderator complained that it should've been private. I can't find it, but if anyone can please post it here.
Is there any reason for their admins to be able to edit someone else's posts? If someone breaks rules just delete it.
Is there any reason for their admins to be able to edit someone else's posts? If someone breaks rules just delete it.
It's not against the rules to say "fuck <admin here>", so he just edited the posts because he was tired of seeing so much of it.
Yeah i'm sure it's easy to just deal with a huge swathe of the internet doing everything they can to fraudulently assert you're a pedo.
maybe get past your hateboner for anything alt right related and understand how wrong spez is for doing this? What's to stop him from doing this again other than his flimsy promise? If they don't like a subreddit, the admins can false flag it by editing comments and inserting hate speech. How many other comments like this were edited by an admin?

The sub's mods have saying that the people who were posting doxes there had already been banned from the sub. Additionally the admins have been intentionally adding fast vote decay to donald posts while giving extra votes to clinton posts. Their bias is established, their official stance is "quarantine those we disagree with", they edit (shadow edit? part of the issue with this is that there was no indication on the posts that they had been edited at all) people's posts for giggles, where does illusion that they have the least bit integrity left coming from?
I'm so glad I stick to smaller subreddits. Those avoid all the stupid fucking drama.
Because they have physical ownership of the machines? Any system to stop them from editing other people's posts would basically be an honor system that they could just override by directly manipulating the database server.
Presumably the people who set up the administation tools are not the same people who are doing enforcement of community rules or whatever.
are we gonna have another reddit lockdown let me get out my pun book
The admin in this case is the CEO.
Usually the CEO wouldnt know how to override posts in the database, spez probably does but if he did it so casually i doubt he went through that effort. To just be casually shadow editing posts it had to have been programmed that way with intent to use it. Doesn't reflect well on them, though neither does the rest of their tools like shadowbans and automod.
If the reddit admins are just editing people's post for giggles why are we expected to believe them about the reason they banned those subs.
It was more of an emotional edit considering the fact that the dude was just fucking tired of all these pedophillia accusations and the moderators actively supporting these accusations.
The sub's mods have saying that the people who were posting doxes there had already been banned from the sub. I don't think it's an issue of bias, it's an issue about people in r/the_donald being dicks.
Is there any reason for their admins to be able to edit someone else's posts? If someone breaks rules just delete it.
Mods can't do it on facepunch so we're safe here

this doesn't really bode well for the admins, but to be fair, the_donald users and mods are a bunch of conspiracy loving nutjobs, so they're going to blow this out of proportion for years to come.
Mods on facepunch would never do that, if you ever see somebody say "im gay" or similar it's 100% true
Yup he did. The implications of this are yuuuuuge.
I don't understand how you could not expect a forum on the internet to allow admins to edit posts.
Afaik on FP it'll say who edited it last though.
K so Matt, I'm noticing that a lot of your accusations here are based on speculation and assumptions
Usually the CEO wouldnt know how to override posts in the database, spez probably does but if he did it so casually i doubt he went through that effort.

To just be casually shadow editing posts it had to have been programmed that way with intent to use it. [editline]23rd November 2016[/editline]
Afaik on FP it'll say who edited it last though.
This information used to be available to all users, but for some reason it was removed.

It is an assumption on your part. I didn't say it wasn't wrong. Jesus fucking christ.

It'd be strange if they didn't have that button.
