WASHINGTON -- President Obama will propose two years of free community college for American workers in Tennessee on Friday, as part of his three-state tour this week to preview his State of the Union Address. Obama teased his community college proposal in a video uploaded to Facebook Thursday. More details will be announced by the White House Thursday night. "Put simply, what I'd like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for anybody who's willing to work for it," he said. "It's something we can accomplish, and it;s something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anyone in the world."
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2015/01/08/obama-free-community-college/21466969/
Please let this not be hot air. If this goes through soon enough, I could be able to save money to go to a good college once I'm done getting my prerequisites through community college. Thanks Obama, I promise I'll be a good teacher in the future
That's fucking incredible (if it happens.)

I'm sorry, I can't take this as anything more than Obama passing air at this point. He chronically under-delivers.
I'd definitely like to see this happen. The stigma associated with getting a community college education is really dumb. Some of my friends go and their not losing money on it. They're going to transfer to a state school with no problem whatsoever. Whereas I have another friend who has to pay out the ass in student loans at an IV league.

I'm going to get all my pre-reqs out of the way, and try to get my associates at community college, and then I'll go off to get my masters and hopefully go to grad school. I'd rather not drop $35k on a 4 year college that I might not like since I have to do all the freshmen classes first
Watch businesses laugh at Associate degrees after everyone gets them. Including universities looking at transfers, because unfortunately in America, they act more like a business than a school.
Huh, what kind of free are we expecting here? Because right now I go to community college for free**. *Free college tuition will pay for all of your college expenses, but only after the bill is due, so you better have a few grand on you when you sign up **Loans are available for those that realize that it is impossible to work full time since local community colleges offer no online classes
PLEASE, please please please please please this is so important to people like me, PLEASE OBAMA
Watch businesses laugh at Associate degrees after everyone gets them. This would be huge for me.
Fuck it, if it covers a lot of shit I'd totally do it for free. Need to do something with my life anyways.
This would be amazing.
Heh. Minnesota is arguing their own form of this. Should be interesting to see how this plays out
This will make associate degrees the same as a high school diploma won't it?
It's a shame that it won't extend to tech schools. The school I want to go to is only 18 months, come out of it with all the ASE certs I could ever want, no bullshit classes, but it's also not a community college. And I still can't afford the $30,000 or so in tuition to go there. [editline]8th January 2015[/editline]
This will make associate degrees the same as a high school diploma won't it?
That already happened. The value of a college diploma has plummeted like a fucking rock in the past 20 years or so, ever since the push for everyone to have one hit.
I hate the stigma against community college because it means I have to do required classes I will never use for my degree at a higher level university, simply because my dad who is helping to fund me thinks only losers start with community college.
huh, that would be nice I guess. Now maybe if I could force my mother into finishing high school I could prepare her for something like this since she deserves a chance at college more then I do.
Earning a free trial of sorts? I'd definitely be behind that idea. It'd actually make people want to perform well early if the "anybody who's willing to work for it" stays in.
thanks obama! but im nowhere near tennessee and I'm already a sophomore in uni
Watch businesses laugh at Associate degrees after everyone gets them. More people having associate's degrees doesn't equate to them no longer representing actual knowledge and experience gained through schooling
Watch as Republicans call him a communist for making education free
Heh. Minnesota is arguing their own form of this. Should be interesting to see how this plays out
Oh shit really? What's the status of that? I'm about to graduate High School so that'd be really useful information to know.
I'm confused. Did he say that he was going to try and give 2 years of free community college for ALL American workers and he said it IN Tennessee, or was he saying he was going to give 2 free years of community called to all american workers in Tennessee
Oh shit really? What's the status of that? I'm about to graduate High School so that'd be really useful information to know.
If it got passed it wouldnt apply to you. Kare had a segment on it. It would only apply to new high school students
If it got passed it wouldnt apply to you. Kare had a segment on it. It would only apply to new high school students
Damn. Well, it's good that we're pushing regardless!
-snip nvm-
Oh my fucking god please obama i dont want to have to pay 33,000 dollars for just 2 years of technical college
Watch businesses laugh at Associate degrees after everyone gets them. Including universities looking at transfers, because unfortunately in America, they act more like a business than a school.
Um you clearly underestimate 1) the difficulty in attaining a degree and 2) the number of people who, despite it being free, choses to not pursue a degree. Scandinavia has had free higher education for a long time and we're not nations shock-full of academics despite that.
